I know on the 7200nex with the maestro rr it gives you access to some gauges & data as well as ability to clear trouble codes. Is the only way to get that option by buying the 7200nex or has there been a way to add that capability to the 7100's??

The only difference between the x100nex vs the x200nex series is the capability for Maestro RR was added.  Other than that, they're exactly the same.  Unless you have a specific need to see certain gauges while driving, I wouldn't even bother.  Just keep a bluetooth OBD dongle in your glove box, they're only like $20.  Then use the Torque app on android, or equivalent app on iOS to view guages or clear trouble codes.
