Um...maybe I'm missing something here, but what would make you think that the steering wheels controls would work.

I know that the track +/- buttons dont work to begin with

but even the volume and mute buttons dont work for me

Riiiight...but again, what would make you think that they would? I mean I don't know a whole lot about car audio (I'm an inside nerd) but it's not like the volume and mute are controlling the amp...they're controlling the head unit. And now they're not hooked up to your head unit.

That is unless you have a really long cable from your car to the garage where you left the factory unit....

(If I'm way off base here, someone let me know. I love to learn)

What steering wheel control adapter did you use? If it was not manufactured by pac, periferal, or soundgate, then I doubt it would work properly. If you didn't use one at all, let's just say that the only way they are going to work is to press the button on the steering wheel and the button on the nav unit AT THE SAME TIME.
