If you use the wired PAC interface you will be limited to those controls but get better performance, if you go wireless you can program whatever you want, but they may not be as reliable.

Actually the wired pac SWI-PS has 9 functions if I believe:

mute, vol up and down, track up and down, source select, memory up and down, I might be missing one (or 2). It's on the pac web site in the instruction manual for that unit. But you can program any of your steering wheel buttons to any of the "included" commands.

Ducatiboy is correct. One of switches on my car is for switching the preset stations. I now use that button to mute the Z1.

Here is the list

Volume Up, Volume Down, Mute, Track Up, Track Down, Source, Preset Up, Preset Down and Band.

I've got 6 buttons I can use.

Volume Up , Down, Source and Mute seem to be a no brainer.

Track Up and Down are only CD Specific Functions ?
Source Preset Up and Down and Sirius/XM/Tuner Specific Functions ?
Dang.....the up and down on my steering wheels does up and down for all these functions. Decisions, decions.....

I thought you can program any of the available funtions on the PAC unit. Am I correct?

I don't have the z1 yet, but I am trying to figure out if the SWI-PS is the way to go. My car has a phone button on the steering wheel so I am hoping that the SWI-PS will work with that somehow.

Do any of the functions available through the SWI-PS allow you to make a phone call?

Hello Racbor,

From the function list I saw on the PAC website, there are no phone functions built-in the PAC unit. Pioneer has a wireless remote that attaches to the steering wheel (I have it) and it allows you to use the phone. I bought mine on the Pioneer website.

Track up and down are for:
CD track up and down, Sat Radio Channel up and down, Ipod next or pretious song, and I think it will do FM radio station seek. I believe it will also do DVD video tracks

Source is just source it will cycle through the AV source.

Preset up and down work for:
AM, FM, Sat Radio

Yes you can. Any function that's available in the pac unit (listed above) is programmable with any button on your steering wheel. Volume up could be volume down, or track next could be source, what ever you want.

You can program your "phone button" to volume up or mute or something, but right now, the only commands the pac SWI-PS can put out are: Volume Up, Volume Down, Mute, Track Up, Track Down, Source, Preset Up, Preset Down and Band.

Nope, not yet. They say they are working on it. But right now, no you can't use a steering wheel button connected to the SWI-PS to initiate a phone call.

If pioneer's IR remote can do it (and I don't know if it can) you could get a SWI-X but I really don't like the IR blaster solution. Wired is so much better.

If there is a wired pioneer remote which does "phone" or "voice" the PAC guys can upgrade the SWI-PS units to do it.

Here is a link to the description of the IR remote for the Z1. Hope this helps.

Voice control is on the wireless remote (which would allow you to place calls), so that's an option.
