First off, let me begin by giving kudos to all who have freely shared information with all the people that visit this board. I have been the beneficiary of your knowledge and just want to say thanks!
Before I remove my brand new, "professionally installed" (I use the term very loosely) Z2 from my brand new 2008 F-350, sell it to the highest bidder and reinstall the factory system I thought I would ask here first to try to resolve the problems I'm having, one last time.
Since this unit was installed, the navigation has never been right. It has always been at least 200 feet behind my actual position as I travel. The shop that installed this unit, "the only Ford factory approved warranty center" for audio/video/gps installation and repairs in my area, failed to connect the VSS, night mode and reverse circuits. Their response when I asked about this? "Uhh, we never hook those up." After taking the unit out myself and getting a look at what they did to my harnesses and how they made the connections, I will never let those hacks touch anything of mine again. So going back to them to sort this out, is out of the question.
After cleaning up some of the connections as best I could, I found the VSS wire provided by Ford. I made that connection as well as the one for the night mode. I did a system reset and drove around to calibrate it. The position is now worse. Not only is it lagging behind my actual position, but is off the side of the roads I travel. It shows my position at least a couple of hundred feet north and west of where I actually am. Sometimes more. While I am in motion, the map/landscape is doing what I can only describe as stop motion. Instead of a smooth, continuous picture of the map while I'm in motion, it's like it's displaying picture frames every second or so. I did 2 more reset/calibration procedures and got the same thing. I disconnected the VSS and it is no different. I've checked all connections several times and everything is good.
I'm getting tired of tearing my dash apart trying to figure this thing out. I've got almost $2k and a double handful of hours of my time in what is proving to be a piece of junk.
I mean, how is it that Garmin, TomTom, Magellan, etc. can make piddly portable units that cost a few hundred dollars that you don't have to calibrate, hook a VSS to and hard wire for night mode that are perfectly accurate, smooth and trouble free? Just plug in and go. And the map updates are about $75 vs $250 for Pioneer's. With the Z2 you you pay $2k, have fight with it for hours and if the planets aren't aligned exactly right, so sorry, start over? I was under the assumption (wrongly) that I would be getting a much nicer unit than my old dash top Garmin. To make things worse, sometimes this thing tells you to take routes that make no sense at all. I had one route that it told me to go to an intersection, make a U-turn, go to the next intersection (one I had just passed) and make another U-turn and continue the way I was originally going! What is that about?!
I didn't buy this unit just for the navigation, but it was a big part of the equation. For $2k, all of it should be right and I shouldn't have to jerk around with any of it. I haven't even got a chance to play with the rest of it yet, because I've been spending all my free time trying to sort out problems with the navigation.
Sorry for the rant. I'm just beginning to believe I've been scammed. This has been one of the worst and most expensive learning experiences I've had in a long time. I'm just about at the end of my rope. I'm not going to invest much more time in this thing. If I can't make it act like it's supposed to, it's out of here. Is there anyone that can offer me some hope of correcting the problems I'm experiencing with this unit, or is this about all I can expect from it?
Thanks in advance!
