D3 Not Working Properly

Totally new to this site and to owning a nav sys. Having all sorts of problems with my D3. It has me making turns where they don't exist. At times when I'm on a "major" highway it tells me to exit before or after my actual exit. It has me make U-turns when doing so would take me away from my destination. I live in NY and purchased from a fellow member of the Honda Element Owners Club who is in Utah. He claims there was nothing wrong with it when he sent it to me., that I must be setting it wrong. I have tried it several times and keep getting bogus information. Can this be casued by improper installation?? There are times when I've already passed an area and it tells me what I should have done (i.e. passed a traffice circle and after passing it the system told me to take the first exit on it). I'm really upset (makes me feel like I was taken in). Anyone have an idea or suggestions? This is the first nav system I've ever had but I'm almost possible I've been setting it correctly. Thanks for any advice you can throw my way.

You could possibly be getting poor satellite signal. You should be able to check your signal strength on the system somewhere. I can't remember how you get there off the top of my head, but I'm sure somebody else can. If not, it's in the manual.

Although there are issues with the map system having poor routing skills, not really Pioneer's fault, more the fault of the mapping database provider they went with, I think.
