GPS 3D hybrid learning - VSS - Trouble code in vehicle

I am getting frustrated. I have an 06 Toyota Tacoma. I had a D3 with the BTB bluetooth, iPod connection and steering wheel harness installed. The only problem I am having is with the GPS. Sometimes the map freezes or the arrow is at a funky angle in either N/S mode or follow the road mode (what I call them anyway). I can sometimes be a mile away by the time it corrects itself. I don't like that. I usually receive 6 satellites or better. I have noticed sometimes that installation position will sometimes say "excessive vibration". 3d hybrid learning mode shows sporadic readings in that speed is not registering when I am driving along with distance traveled and burst but obviously has because there are numbers there. the little gyro car thing works though showing left/right turns and accelerate/slowdown. Especially what I don't like is that my check engine light came on shortly after installation and the Toyota dealership informed me it was a one time occurance with the VSS. They cleared it. Next day it came back on. I went back to car toys (for a 3rd time) with proof of the error code and all they did was disconnect it (a solid tab like connector not a tap) and told me that it was not important and that in fact they hook it up only 50% of the time. The second occurance of the error code has now gone away proving there is some sort of problem between the D3 and the truck. This has not cured the sticking map problem Now the big questions are: How important is the VSS and should I force Car Toys to replace the unit which they seem to be willing to do or live with the sticking?

1. Make sure the option for the installation angle is set correctly. For example, if the screen is facing more towards the driver than the center, or vice versa, set the unit's option as so. This should cure the funky angle of your arrow on the map. And make sure the antenna is mounted laterally to the front of the vehicle, not side ways (may not matter, but won't hurt to try).

2. Make sure the unit is mounted securely and not loose.

3. There has to be a problem with either the unit or the routing of the VSS wire. Somewhere behind your dash, the VSS wire they ran may be pinched and touching metal and may be shorting out your car's VSS signal. If installed properly, this should merely pick up the signal that the ECU sees from the speed sensor, not cause it to malfunction and set the CEL.

4. Demand they look into this, because the whole VSS issue is probably causing your whole map issue. I noticed with my car, the map was much less accurate before I connect the VSS wire.

In summary, sounds like a faulty unit or poor VSS wire routing. Also, make sure they reimberse you for any diagnostic fees Toyota may have charged you.

Thanks for the input DJ.

1. Viewing angle is correct. What I meant on the arrow is that it will be moving sideways along the road rather than pointing along it.

2. Unit is mounted securely but I do have my questions concerning the bluetooth module since I think it seems I saw them kind of just throw it in the hole before mounting the deck in.

3. That is a good idea considering what I said in #2.

4. I am not sure if the VSS issue is causing the whole map issue considering what else I have read in this forum on the quality and accuracy of the GPS as a whole in this unit. In fact, if I had read any of that info and GPS was my major consideration for the deck I would steer clear of the Avic and anything Pioneer GPS. With the VSS disconnected, what accuracy I did have has gone to pot so it appears the VSS is indeed needed. As soon as I get some time I will be going back and have them replace with a new deck and to look into the VSS wire from the deck to see if anything funky is going on in there.

there could be an issue on which vss wire they tapped into for the d3. i dont think that toyota has canbus... but maybe the shop put the vss wire to a canbus wire and is throwing everything off. possibly :?:

Thanks for the tip valvefox. I did some searching and found on some sort of California Emissions fact sheet that the 2006 Toyotas do use CAN BUS. However, as I had said above I was taking the unit back and did. Car Toys installed a new unit, insisted they had the correct VSS wire and in fact put a diode on the pink VSS wire leading to the D3 jsut in case, even though it is a read only circuit. So far so good, everything is working fine. By now my trouble light would have come on. I am now registering speed and mileage on the 3D Hybrid learning screen, my arrow (or screen) is not doing funky things and I have noticed on the screen that shows how many sats I am receiving that my little green antenna (next to the sats) has a green bar next to it. Never saw that before.

Here's a funny little side note. Even though the new navi DVD that came with the new D3 says ver. 1 on the label it seems to be different as there are a couple roads in my neighborhood that are suddenly there that weren't on the original DVD that I had. I SWEAR!!!

So, one day and all is well. It seems I may have had a defective unit and should consider myself fortunate that Car Toys did not hassle me at all. They may be sick of me but I am now very pleased. So I can't even complain about Car Toys.

Oh, and DJ, Toyota dealership did not charge me for the first CEL episode because I brought the truck in for service anyway and they looked at it free of charge. Now I can concentrate on that back up camera and new exhaust. WOOHOO!!
