Hi everybody. I know I am a newbie here but in my trials and tribulations with the CD-BTB200 (BTB) and my fairly vain search to find an answer I thought I would explain how I seem to have done the impossible and maybe give some hints or direction because the ol Avic D3 is fussy and directions fuzzy. When one begins this seemingly futile venture you begin to wonder what is at fault. The BTB (the bluetooth module), the carrier or the phone. I can't give a definitive answer to that but it is not the BTB and is more than likely the phone even though you will read that a carrier like Verizon has a lock on their BT. Whatever that may mean.
Here's my vitals. Verizon LG VX8600, D3 with BTB, iPod connection and Steering wheel controls in an 06 Toyota Tacoma.
.
DISCLAIMER: you have to know your phone and how to get to the functions that I mention. My experience comes from the finicky VX8600 and the wife's Blackberry 8830 world edition.
.
PRODUCT ENDORSEMENT: The Blackberry!!!! Paired first time, all contacts went to phonebook in one shot.
now to the fun.
.
PHONE: (I am not sure if all of this is needed but it is what I did and eventually something worked)
* First I went to Verizon wireless and had them flash my phone to update to BT v 1.02. It shows up in my phone info as Q304.01.02. I am not sure if that is important or not. My phone is almost 2 years old so I thought it would not hurt. I do not believe it had a couple of the profiles before flashing.
* Go to your bluetooth menu and show options.
....Hopefully you see a choice for SUPPORTED PROFILES.
....Check to see that you have HANDSFREE, FILE TRANSFER and/or OBJECT PUSH. If you don't have HANDSFREE then you won't be able to pair with the BTB. If your phone is older maybe try getting the phone flashed and that profile will become available.
....While in Options see if you can name your phone if you haven't already. Better to give the BTB something definitive to show you when it connects. Fluffy is better than unknown device.
....Set Discovery Mode to Visible (some phones have a time limit on visibility so do this step just before pairing when using BTB to search for phone). You can set it back to undetectable/hidden after you have registered your phone with the BTB.
* Delete any instances of "Pioneer BT Unit 2" if you have attempted pairing before.
.
PUT THE PARKING BRAKE ON!!! this is something easy to overlook. As you may have found out or read, alot of functions are not available with the brake off.
.
AVIC D3 -- This is where it gets frustrating because of two options to connect. D3 search for phone in discovery mode or phone to search for the D3. D3 search for phone ultimately worked for me.
.
* D3 search for phone:
....At BT phone screen (not BT Audio) push MENU hard button
....Push OFF soft key (lower right of screen) to turn D3 off then turn off ignition.
....Turn ignition back on and then hit MENU hard key to get back where you were. I know!! This would seem to be a silly thing to do but This seems to clear the D3/BTB of previous failed attempts. Not sure if this is the silver bullet here but this was my EUREKA moment.
....Now hit the FUNCTION soft key
....Hit PHONE CONNECT soft key
.
****Now set your phone discovery mode to visible.****
.
....Hit SEARCH soft key on the D3.
....If this works then you will go through the pairing procedure and will be asked to put in the code that is 0000 (from your phone). Hopefully you have connected now. If not then try try again but each time make sure you go to the first step and turn the D3 off and clear the "Pioneer BT Unit 2" from your phone.
....If you decide to try phone search for the D3 then choose CONNECTION OPEN rather than SEARCH and perform the search from your phone.
....Once connected REGISTER YOUR PHONE AS THE FIRST PHONE.
....Back at the function tab soft key hit PHONE REGISTER.
....See your phone name at the top? Is it still Fluffy? Touch and hold the first (top) position until your phone name populates that position.
.
ONCE PHONE IS PAIRED - TIME TO TRANSFER CONTACTS.
***Again, make sure you have the FILE TRANSFER/Object Push/Send Name Card profile for your particular cell phone.
BACK AT THE PHONE--- Go back to your BT menu. Navigate to the new "Pioneer BT Unit 2" and select options and find something like INCOMING SECURITY and set that to ALWAYS CONNECT or something similar. This will allow the D3 and your phone to automatically connect each time you start your vehicle. Cool huh?
.
******NOW THIS IS MUY IMPORTANTE******
....YOU MUST BE IN THE PHONEBOOK TRANSFER SCREEN....
....Back at the MENU, hit FUNCTION soft key and choose PHONEBOOK TRANSFER. If you can't choose it make sure your parking brake is set.
.....At this point the BTB and your phone will disconnect. Do not panic.
PHONE: Again, this is with my phone so find your flavor on how to do this. Phone BT menu, select "Pioneer BT Unit 2" and select options.
...Send name card.
Your phone may say something different but it will be the same gist. Or you can Send Name Card via bluetooth from your contacts list. You may even be lucky and be able to send the whole contact list over such as with my wife's Blackberry. If not then you will have to send one at a time. BUT HEY! At least they are getting there. The D3 and your phone will acknowledge the transfer. Once you are done you will have to reconnect the phone. You can do this by direct connect now because your D3 and your phone are now buddies or wait a few seconds and they will auto connect.
A FEW NOTES:
** RING TONE OPTION ** This option is on/off and is only whether you want to hear the one and only tone the D3/BTB has to notify you that a call is coming in. IT IS NOT TO PLAY YOUR GIRLFRIEND'S SPECIFIC RINGTONE YOU HAVE SET ON YOUR PHONE. edit Apparently some phones can send over the ringtone but the majority of phones out there do not. I do not know what profile or BT protocol allows it to happen.
** VOICE DIAL ** You will have to play with this on your phone. Such as do not setup for your phone to say prompts. Voice dial does work however, one big problem with the BTB is that no prompts can be heard over the speakers. This is not just me but everybody. There are many many posts on this topic alone. edit I have read some smart phones will work, again, this is not the majority.
I really hope this helps. I have edited this since I first wrote it but as before in being so detailed I am sure there are specific things I may have missed. There were so many things I did in total that I can't remember but eventually got me to where I have a connected phone with a phone book. Good luck and cheers
