So a friend told me that there was a way to connect my Valentine 1 radar detector to my Pioneer headunit and it would show where the signals are coming from on the navigation screen. Is this a real thing or was he just pulling my leg?

My guess is that he is pulling your leg. If you could do that, then Pioneer would have made some sort of add-on for it, i think.
