can D3 drive speakers Tri-Mode for a phantom center channel?

Tri mode is when you run 2 stereo speakers,

and a 3RD speaker off just the positive leads of the 2 speakers,

and that should provide only monaural sounds to the center speaker,

to kind of anchor the sound stage.

the stock Infinity systems in Dodges have a center channel (like a 3 inch) and my truck has the hole, just wondering if the D3 output amp is hardy enough to do this?

wonder if it would enhance voice clarity for movies?

my diesel truck is hard to hear soft movies in.

chime in here if i am wrong.

(spell checker got me - it's TRI mode)

It's doubtful that the small 4 channel amp in the D3 could accomplish that, even if you could find a speaker setup that could be run in a three-way mode while still remaining inside the amp's tolerable resistance range.

Your best bet is to use some kind of external signal processor/surround decoder and amp if you want to have a center channel/surround type setup.

I dont know if this applies to your question but before I put the amps in my car i actually had a component set of speakers hooked to the D3 and it sounded great.

V Blue, good data,

that is my intention: better sound, with less parts (no amps & cross over & power blocks & caps & RCAs)

HiFi, it's pretty common (at least it was ~10 years ago when i was into stereos) to run multiple speakers in Tri-mode,

you ran one huge amp with one set of full range RCA outputs.

you ran a speaker off each channel, with a passive high cross over,

and that was your stereo,

and one (or two - like you said about the ohms) subwoofers in Tri mode, with passive low pass crossovers,

and you had a complete system with minimal wiring and components.

i just dont' know how "rugged" the D3's internal amp is.

as you have posted in other threads, it's a "price leader" type unit, that does a lot of "good" things,

but i was wondering if the internal amp was "good" or "excellent."

i think i will take VBlue's advice, and just run some nice components (better clarity) and let it go at that.

I've done the whole "take the dash out, cut holes in it, dissassemble the tweeters, and reassemble them around the dash" stuff.

lots of work. sounded good, great imaging, but LOTS of work.

Tri-mode died about five or ten years ago when dolby digital processors came to market. I definitely wouldn't do it with deck power. You're talking about like 17 watts per channel, definitely not enough to power two decent speakers, much less three
