  1. GQ...

Thanks for your response. Carving up that plastic casing sounds pretty "tricky" and a disaster in the making IF my carving skills fail!!

I've been giving it some more thought and was wondering IF the solution might be working from antenna end of the factory setup.

I was wondering IF I disconnected the factory antenna #6 from wiring harness #5 ...could I then make the new antenna connection there and then run the antenna forward as needed??

I guess it all boils down to the type of connection on the end of the wiring harness #6....

    ANYONE know?

    Thanks in advance..

  2. I have a 2005 Silverado with factory installed XM radio, and the antenna is located on the roof like everyone else.

The problem I'm having is when I load my Lance camper on to my truck, I basically loose my XM reception because the forward overhang of the camper over the cab blocks all reception.

I purchased an aftermarket XM antenna from BestBuy but cannot connect it to the factory XM tuner unit as the antenna male plastic connector and the tuner plastic female receptical connectors are not compatable.

I stopped by one stereo shop in town and the installer said that I was out of luck as there is no aftermarket antenna that will plug into the factory GM receiver. I even called Crutchfield, and the tech there said basically the same thing....

HELP!!! This seemingly simple project is turning into a giant PITA!!!!

All I want to do is disconnect the factory antenna from the tuner, and replace it with an aftermarket unit that I can locate towards the front of my truck to improve signal reception.

Is there an adapter out there somewhere that will allow this??

    THANKS in advance.

  3. I've always favored the D3, but now I'm leaning towards the Kenwood, simply because I'm under the impression that it's NAV system doesn't require the use of disc...

Aside from this one feature, how does it stack up against the D3?

Do all the extra systems, such as IPOD integration, XM/SIRIUS radio, Bluetooth, etc. work as well as the D3

    Thanks in advance!

  4. Well I just ordered from al-eds for the afforementioned 529. I did second day air, as I live in [H]otlanta so 549 out the door & in my hands for the weekend :)

You did the right thing as I just checked al-eds web site and since yesterday .......they've raised the prices $20........:roll::roll:

  5. The standard 9-10FT cable lengths for the XM and NAV are not long enough for a "custom" install I'm thinking about attempting. It'd sure simplify things if I could just order pre-made cable to the length I need, but I'm not opposed to making them myself.

I just don't know what type cable/wire I need , or where to get it!!

Anyone know where to locate the kind of stuff I'm going to need?

    A couple other questions:

Will lengthening the cable degrade the signal?

Better to have a one piece cable, without a "connector/splice"??

    Thanks in advance......

  6. Getting real close to making the jump, but would like to find a first rate installer to do the job, as I'm going to need some help on where to permanently locate and install receivers for the radio and nav systems.

I haul a HUGE slide in camper around and the overhead sleeper completely covers the roof/dashboard of the truck cab, to the point that the factory XM radio receiver, mounted on the truck cab roof, can barely pick up a signal. My Magellan Roadmate GPS also has a really difficult time receiving signals no matter where I put it on the dash!!

I don't want the new receivers "sitting" on the hood of the truck, and was thinking of permanently locating each one on the top surface of the front bumpers at the corner...

As you can tell this is going to be a "custom" install requiring some experience and imagination...

Anyone know of such an installer within a 50 mile radius of the San Fernando Valley???

    Thanks in advance!!!

  7. ...some of the features are a bit less refined than in more expensive units. Like the nav routing is a bit daft at times compared to a dedicated GPS unit. And if you're going to be using the navigation all the time you're going to want to get an external audio source, like an ipod, XM, or Sirius radio. Other than that, it's perfect for the price IMO.

Hope you don't mind me jumping in on this Q&A session..

The wife & I will be touring the country in our truck and camper, and we'll be relying on the NAV unit quite extensively....so my question is: Just how bad is the NAV unit?? The most frequent complaint I've seem is that the routing selection to a location can get a little bizarre....and lengthy.

Also your recommendation to get an external audio source if the the NAV unit is going to be used extensively....can you elaborate a little more on the reason why?

    Thanks........

  8. New to the 411Forum....so sorry if this question has already been asked 1000 times...

Thinking of getting a D3, but if there's a possibility the next model is coming out within the next 6 months or so...I'll hold off.

    Thanks in advance........

  9. NEWBIE here....

Hope there's some pickup truck drivers amongst this group!! Thinking of buying D3 to install in my 2005 Silverado, but would like to see pictures first...before I make the plunge.

The existing factory system consists of a AM/FM/XM/single CD player with OnStar and steering wheel controls.

Would really appreciate any pics that you might be able to share, along with your evaluation of how the system looks and works.

    Thanks in advance....
