  1. I've been having a problem for a while now with my NEX 4100 and I have  been unable to solve it.

During Carplay playback of music that is on my iPhone 6 local storage I will periodically have the audio volume lower itself and then come back up, exactly like what happens when a new notification comes in on the phone, except there is no notification.

I don't have the problem on any other hardware I listen on other than the 4100.

Has anyone encountered this, is there any solution to the problem?

  2. Okay, still happens after 1.53 update and as a bonus problem the BT does not upgrade on the radio as part of the update.

Dealer has agreed to replace our unit with one of the post-CES Kenwood units coming out to see if we still have the problem with a different manufacturer radio.  Pioneer really blew it with a variety of things for me including their snotty tech support.  The dealer had offered to get us into a 2016 model year Pioneer unit but we will just switch to Kenwood, they seem to also be getting good reviews on Amazon, etc.

  3. Looks like the NEX4100 update is currently unavailable (clicking the link does nothing).  It is now referencing 1.053 vs the 1.05 that's available for all other models.

I imagine that customers started updating the firmware and Pioneer discovered a problem and have yanked the FW.

Just letting anyone know who has the new FW but has not yet updated it.

  4. We have this problem on our 2008 MDX which was retrofitted with the 4100.  Our dealer insists it is not normal.  I'd say it happens at least a couple of times a week but does not happen most of the time.  Definitely seems to be timing related and I've noticed it happens more frequently if I start the car and immediately put the gear selector into reverse.

Not sure if a line capacitor or some other change in the wiring would buffer power to the unit and cure this.  Dealer wanted to replace (but did not have any stock)... from reading this thread it seems as though this is "normal" for at least some of us.  Pretty annoying.

Some of the other annoyances we've had definitely appear to be carplay related as the problems have improved/changed as iOS updates have been delivered with no change on the FW of the Pioneer deck.... but the unit not starting happens even with no phone connected so pretty sure it's Pioneers fault.

Kind of disappointing that Pioneer has updated older headunits than the 4100 and no FW update to 4100 in almost a year... guess they've already abandoned it.

  5. I have had similar but slightly different problems with our NEX4100 installed in June.  Ours will sometimes take 1-2 minutes to boot up.  The screen is simply black and none of the keys work.  1-2 minutes later the splash screen comes on and it is booting.  We have also had some weird carplay behavior which has improved somewhat with the newest releases of iOS 9.1.  We've tried a full reset of the unit but it didn't resolve any of the issues.

Our local shop insists that the deck should never take 1-2 minutes to start powering up and have recommended replacement of the radio. Unfortunately the NEX-4100 is on backorder for them and has been for the past 3-4 weeks.

If they don't get any NEX-4100 units in stock in the next couple of weeks they have offered to swap it out with a different radio, such as a comparable Kenwood model.

  6. We have been having problems with our NEX since shortly after install. It will run pretty well for a couple of weeks and then start to periodically crash when CarPlay starts. Another thing that happens is sometimes the head unit won't start for a minute or two after being powered up. Doing a full reset seems to sort it out for awhile and then it gets flaky again.

Our dealer insists none of this is normal and have offered to either replace it with another 4100 or Kenwoods new DDX with CarPlay.

Does anyone have experience with the Kenwood head unit?

  7. I'm excited by your post. I have had a lot of issues with CarPlay and felt like I was the only one since so many here rave about it. I have had crashes, media playback not starting automatically when getting back in the car among other things. This has me excited to update to iOS 9 and hopefully have an improved experience.

  8. Thanks for replying.  I already changed the USB cable at the outlet the installer put in and it had no affect on the issue.  It could be the USB cable between the head unit and the center console but I'm a bit skeptical since the problem does not happen on 2 out of 3 iphones.

Installer had already previously offered to swap the NEX 4100 for something else such as an Alpine or Kenwood unit with Carplay so I can always just have them do that since Pioneer has zero interest in fixing the problem and hinted that FW development on NEX 4100 is done.

  9. Something that's been bugging me about my NEX 4100 for a while.... I have three iPhones BT paired to the NEX 4100 but it only seems capable of knowing the last one that was paired to it, if that phone is missing there is an error that comes up after a while complaining "phone missing"... it is a bit mind boggling that it does not have the ability to simply move on to the next BT phone.

My other cars have the ability to have multiple phones paired... I even have this capability on an older Pioneer deck in an old Suzuki truck we have.

Is this not possible with the NEX 4100?

  10. Just wanted to go ahead and post an update.  I thought it would be timely based on another thread I noticed with people reporting that Carplay was acting flaky with iOS 8.4.

This is what I have tried in order to resolve the problems I am seeing which consist primarily of things going on like the head unit randomly disconnecting from my phone (didn't happen before the iOS update).... or my personal favorite, Carplay starts up (now it never auto plays my music which is annoying) I hit play on the Carplay Music screen and it acts like it is playing but there is no audio.  Disconnect my phone, wait about 30 seconds and plug it back in and about 50% of the time if I hit play I will get audio.

    1. I deleted the carplay entry on my iPhone and re-connected it to the NEX4100 and then re-accepted the invitation to trust that radio so that Carplay could start up automatically even if the device is locked.

    2. I wiped my iPhone out and restored it from a backup.

    3. I wiped my iPhone out, set it up as a new phone and did nothing other than put a few of my playlists onto the phone.

None of this has fixed the issue.  Getting pretty frustrated at this point.  I understand others are not having issues but there appear to be enough of us that ARE having issues that something is going on.

Next step is going to be going to the shop and connecting my phone to a different head unit to see how it behaves.

  11. Yes thanks for the info, I had also seen a few people report that "forgetting" the HU and then re-connecting it to Carplay fixed the issue... others said it had no effect.  Apple also released iOS 8.4.1 update today and that also could possibly provide a fix to the problem.

I do wonder if Apple Music along with turning in iCloud music collection (in conjunction with this update) could have broken things.  I will turn those off as well and do some more testing.

  12. Standard iPhone troubleshooting steps for non-App specific problems, testing after you do each one and stopping if it fixes it:

    1. Restart the phone.

    2. Use iTunes to restore the phone, including restoring the backup.

    3. Use iTunes to restore the phone, excluding restoring the backup.

If it was App specific, you would delete and reinstall the App between 1 and 2

What has likely happened is that something went wrong with the 8.4 update and the software is corrupted, and the whole thing needs to be reloaded to clean it up. You probably won't need to perform step 3, as step 2 fixes most problems.

So others have had this problem and doing a restore has fixed it?  I see open threads about the issue on Apple's forums that indicate restoring the phone did NOT resolve the problem.

  13. Registered here trying to get some help with this issue as Pioneer tech support are pretty much worthless (they told me to do a factory reset of my iPhone).

Ever since updating to iOS 8.4 (which also brought me Apple Music and Cloud library) my NEX-4100 randomly disconnects from my iPhone 6.  Sometimes this happens right when I plug it in, Carplay comes up but music playback won't start and eventually crashes.... other times I will be listening to music and the iPhone will simply disconnect.

I don't think this is cabling or anything else as everything had been working reasonably well following install of the stereo about a month ago.

Does anyone have any ideas/thoughts on what I might be able to do to resolve this?  Apple blames Pioneer and Pioneer blames Apple.... I spent a great big wad of cash getting this deck custom installed in a car that doesn't accept a double DIN stereo and now my wife is pissed.

    Thanks.
