  1. I get the same thing with Iheartradio as well as TuneIn. It may happen with other third party apps but I use these two the most and haven't noticed it otherwise.

It's my understanding that everything should work as expected even when the phone is locked (black screen). Obviously this doesn't happen. I don't know if it's an issue with the apps or with CarPlay. I suppose you can write an iTunes review for iheartradio and mention this problem, then you can contact apple to share your experience.

Thanks, guess I'll have to do that.  Sucks that the display dims immediately and then causes apps to not work that are supposedly Carplay -enabled.  Perhaps Apple doesn't actually test these "carplay" apps at all?  I mean if the point of dimming the phone is so you don't have to fiddle with it while driving, it makes it stupid to break carplay apps by dimming the screen so they don't work unless you fiddle with the phone.

  2. OK, so it seems that if my iPhone 6s is in carplay mode, and the screen saver/timeout kicks in, that I am unable to launch/play iHeart Radio.

You push the icon on the Pioneer 4000 NEX (latest 1.11 firmware) for iHeart radio and it goes to the black screen that says iHeart Radio and nothing happens.  wait several minutes.  Nothing

Now, observe that my iPhone screen is black.  So i click the button to wake it up and voila, iHeart Radio starts finally on the Pioneer unit.

    Is this working as designed?

I thought that while your phone was in Carplay mode, it wasn't locked?

  3. So for those of you with iPhone, do you like Carplay better than Appradio?

I'm in the process of "learning" Carplay (I have the 4000NEX and was using Android with Appradio and the NetGear Push2TV thingy because the HDMI is very unreliable at least with my Samsung Galaxy S3/S4).

    1)  I see/know that Carplay has limited apps compared to AppRadio.  Probably the only ones/things I miss are Waze since the 4000NEX doens't do google maps (at least with Android).

    2)  I like the Siri control, but I don't like that I can't use the Source button on my steering wheel to "stay" in carplay mode and switch the input.  for example, in AppRadio with Android, I could use the Source button on the steering wheel to switch to XM/HD (while still "staying" in say, iHeartRadio).  While commercials were playing/etc.  Seems that in Carplay with iPhone 6s and the 4000 NEX I Have to push the NEX icon to get back to the main screen and then I can switch inputs.  But that requires futzing with the head unit (ie:  I cannot tell Siri to swtich inputs because that's outside her abilities).  Note:  I don't know if this is particular to Carplay in general or the particular head unit (ie:  When/if Ford Sync3 gets Carplay, dunno if this is easier with the Sync system or not).  I was kinda hoping for an all voice control.

    3)  Carplay for just needing/using the Lighting to USB Cable.  Appradio still needs all the other connections/dongles (NetGear Push2TV isn't compatible with iPhone).  although I don't know if iPhone is less tempermental with HDMI connection than my Galaxy phones are.

    Thoughts/suggestions/ideas?

  4. LOL, yes, just got a used iPhone 6s and it works well.  Unfortunately I have to use the short cable that came with it, as you apparently cannot use a USB-A "extension" cable to get it to work.  So I'll have to see if they have like a 6' Lighting to USB cable.[/

Get something like this and then you never have to worry about pulling your unit out and replacing a lightning cable, then you can use a normal short lightning cable

    Awesome, thank you very much!!!

  5. THis is assuming that you have an iPhone that can do Carplay... if not then you'll have to buy one

  6. I've got a Pioneer AVH 4000 NEX with the "carplay" firmware update. However, right now I'm using Android.  Since AA will not come to this head unit, I'm curious about trying carplay.

I'm a little confused as to the connectors required with an iPhone 6s (I don't have one yet, I'm just asking).  It sounded like it USED to be you had to have an AV adapter, HDMI cable and the USB cable in order to connect the 4000 NEX to the iPhone.

    However:

With the latest firmware update, what is needed from a connectivity standpoint to the 4000 NEX from the iPhone?

    Second:

Does Carplay use "siri eyes-free" (ie, can I push some button either on the iphone or head unit and from that point forward just speak to it like:  Play song blah blah (so it plays an mp3) and then tell it: Play XM to switch to XM on the head unit?

I'd rather try to find out as much as I can before I plunk down $800 for an iPhone 6s (or whatever they cost used, or maybe T-mobile will let me try one)
