  1. This may not answer your question, but I wanted to at least add it to the discussion.   I have a 2008 F150 and I have the AVH-4200NEX unit (very similar to the 8200).  I purchased, and installed myself, a steering wheel control module from Axxess (model: ASWC-1).  It works perfectly.   The ASWC-1 was very easy to install but I did have one issue that might be of help.

First, all items were ordered from Crutchfield, including a wiring harness.  It should be noted that the wiring harness does not have an actual wire and pin at slot 18.  Looking at a F150 wiring diagram of the car audio wiring harness one can see that pin 18 is steering wheel control signal return.  The ASWC-1 instructions state that on the wiring harness this slot, interfacing with Pin 18, should be connected to chassis ground.  I admit, I am no electronics expert, so I did the only thing I knew to do...and a wiring harness cardinal sin:  I left about 3 inches on the OEM side of the OEM connector, and I cut the wire leading to Pin 18 and I soldered/heat shrink a new black wire to it and took it to a common ground to direct bare metal.

The other wires that needed to be connected (were just as stated in the instructions):

    1.  Green/white on the AWSC-1 to the green on the 4200nex

    2.  Black to common chassis ground

    3.  Red to 12v accessory.

    4.  3.5 mm male to 3.5 mm female on the back of the 4200nex labeled W/R

The hardest part of the install was the step in the process where the installer must hit the RESET button.  Weird but true.  You have to stick a pin other tool into a hole in the module.  I followed the instructions and NOTHING happened according to plan.  Turns out, my pin/tool I was using was not actually reaching far enough into the module to actually achieve the reset.  I changed to a micro screwdriver (just a longer tool) and it worked first time.  DUH!

Once the ASWC-1 went through the series of automatic LED flashes, as per instructions, the controls worked with no further action by me.

For $27.00, this unit is easy and worth it.  I recommend it and....it allows some custom programming that I have not yet attempted (just got this installed last weekend)

I hope that something in the above might help you or a future reader.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  2. Wanted to resurrect this thread....

Anyone used a different mic? I am looking for a superior mic I dont care what it costs.

When I talk to people they tell me they can hear themselves talking in a slight echo fashion. They dont seem to mind, but I prefer better if its achievable.

  3. It's basically enough cable to be able to route it anywhere you need to within reach of someone sitting in either front seat, even back to say, a storage compartment in your center armrest or something. I'm sure you could reach the cable farther back, but what the hell would be the point of that, you know?

I was just about to post a thread on this issue....good thing I did a search. Cough.

Well actually, the 6.5' length is good in MOST cases. I am about to purchase one and I do not think it is long enough for what I desire to do...here is why:

    1. I do not want the Ipod connector in my glove box, because in my Ford F150, which is as wide as a Sherman tank, it is very difficult to reach the glove box from the drivers seat. I have a divider console at the shifter area which makes it even more difficult. I know I only have to connect the ipod and then (as ronco 2000 says) "set it and forget it." But even then, it is slightly a pain to reach the glove box.

    2. So I have determined that I want my Ipod connection to ossur overhead in the Ford Overhead Storage Rail system which is a fancy word for an overhead compartment in the center of the truck. It is for sunglasses, cell phones, etc.

    3. But this means the cable has to run from the rear of the D3....to one side of the windshield....up the a-pillar...back to the center of the windshield then about 18" to the bin compartment. And of course I need about 6" of excess cable just to to make sure the iPod is sitting correctly inside the bin.

Which brings me to the next question: Is there an extension available for the Pioneer CD-i200 iPod® Interface Adapter? I was told my a Crutchfield adviser that Pioneer offered such a thing. i spent over 30 minutes on the Pioneer website and was unable to locate one.

Any advise, prior knowledge or other methods of accomplishing this is very welcome.

I am willing to do the typical glove box install, but I was hoping for an even more custom install.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  4. Funny that this topic is fresh....I was just on the phone with Crutchfield about this very issue. Luckily I noticed this issue on the CF website before buying the CD-i200 cable.

The CD-i200 and the AVIC D3 together, will NOT....NOT....show video images from the iPod touch on the D3 video monitor.

I just so happen to have the $49 dollar apple cable discussed earlier in this thread and I will use it for the D3. I will connect it to the A/V inputs for AV-1 on the D3.

However, that leads me to another question. Since the inputs will be to AV-1, the interface with the iPod touch is the basic apple connector at the bottom of the ipod. This is also where the CD-i200 shoudl plug into the iPod. So in order to watch a video, I have to disconnect the CD-i200 and then connect the Apple AV cable (going to AV-1)?

Thats just silly....but I guess I will do it if I have to since I dont see myself watching videos from the iPod often.

Anyone with both a D3 AND the iPod Touch found a better way to do this mod?

    Thanks!!

  5. Well I admit my lack of knowledge on my personal verizon phone when dealing with the function of permanent bluetooth power "on."...so that part of the post is resolved. Thank god.

As for the rest of the post, it is not misguided. Whereas my phone does not have object push technology, it is still a fact that very very few Verizon telephones will work with the D3 cell phone address book trasnfer function. In fact, just a handful of phones out of the thousands of models they have sold over the years.

Perhaps misguided in some eyes, but for many new users here...it is invaluable information. Especially if one was about to purchase the D3 or even a veteran D3 user looking for a new Verizon phone.

And if one takes a look at this troubleshooting portion of the forum, it is easy to see that there are a LOT of Verizon users with nice cell phones with object push technology, sitting in their cars scratching their heads.....wondering why they cannot take full advantage of a very expensive tech purchase.

  6. Technology Savvy??? My mom can't figure out tivo and still loves driving my car because she gets to use the D3. What exactly are you having trouble understanding?

Where do I start the list?

I guess essentially, to me good technology is not one that you have to spend hours and hours reading a manual on how to use it. For example.....if my Mother started to use the D3, there is nothing that tells her to apply the parking brake to access half the damn menus. Do not get me started on the political BS that has our society protecting us from ourselves. Okay so yes the parking brake issue is covered on the cover of the manual.....but lets say I am driving down the road and my passenger starts to toy with the D3.....do you think they are going to understand why they cannot input an address to navigate to until I pull off the road? No. It will require a discussion and explanation from me? That sucks. And thats is NOT intuitive. Period. You cannot even access the menu to change the time of day! Every car I have ever owned does not prevent you from changing the time unless the parking brake is applied. My 2004 BMW had no locked menus on its full double DIN screen.... Yes it made you read its silly little liability statement each time you started the unit, but that was the extent of it.

Many of my issues have to do with how poor the interface of the D3 is.....it is difficult for me to say sitting on my couch, exactly the issues...but the first one that comes to mind is the telephone call logs. When one navigates to the menu, where "log" is available....then one pushes this button, you get a list of calls....a history. The top of the screen shows you that it is for ...lets say....missed calls. 90% of the D3 screen has no other buttons.....its totally black and blank. So what if I want to get my received calls history? What about dialed calls history? Where is the button??? There is plenty of room for another stupid button on the menu...right beside"log"...but NOooooooooooooooooooo Pioneer had to make the navigation such that one MUST continue to push "LOG" then you get dialed call history....push again.....then you received call history. How intutitive is that? It is not.....Period. Bad design....and not easy to figure out without reading well into the manual for something that could have been handled with a better interface.

I remember when web page design was in its infancy....one of the original, fundamental schools of design thought was that in your quest for a user interface, if the user has to navigate through more than three menus to get to the desired information, then you should reconsider your design. You have to navigate through three buttons just to get to the last call history I described above. Maybe I am just not as accepting of bad design and whereas some are more willing to overlook silly flaws in the name of the rest of the D3 goodies.....I dunno.

Next is the fact that ones preset telephone numbers cannot be labeled with a name (yes I know they CAN come from your bt transmitted phone book). Since I am unable to send my phone book....I have six 10 digit telephone numbers programmed into my presets.....and am not ashamed to admit I don't have all six recognized by number alone...so (today for example) my sister calls me from her cell phone....before I pushed the answer button I had to stare at this strange number of an incoming call. Only when I answered it did I know who it was. Please dont tell me if I had a newer cell phone this would not be an issue! If Pioneer had added an edit button to the interface it would be INTUITIVE to use...but NOPE....they could not do it. YET....YET....one can edit addressed in navi, edit your VIN number in set up.....edit the clock...add telephone numbers to addresses in the Navi.....direct dial a number by pushing on the keypad....etc. Come on..this is terrible and you know it.

My 2004 BMW had better controls for its navigation and the only input device was a knob on the dash like the volume knob on the D3. Tell me how that is possible with a touch screen? I have to touch more buttons just to get to a menu point on a touch screen than with an analog control knob?

To me, this is all very sad. Because the D3 has some very strong points, mainly in the control department. Control an ipod, a phone, major tweaking of the audio, sub, staging, etc. The list goes on.

I feel like the D3 just had an 90 yard pass and fell short of the goal line. All because of a small set of fundamental oversights. Poor, very poor.

So yes....very technologically savvy.....but obviously more observant than some.

  7. Toytaco,

Great response. Informative and very helpful. You are correct. I have the V325i. I had to look up the manual to find out also!. The phone itself has no model number on it that I can find.....so before anyone rolls their eyes....I just took the Verizon reps work for it....V325 vs. V325i.

It may not have been clear, but I already knew the V325i did not have Object Push technology. I just went to the Verizon rep to find out a few things. This forum allowed me to realize ahead of time that just because one purchases a new phone from Verizon, does not mean it will solve the phone book transfer problem for me and the D3. So that is good. Unfortunately, I got the "4-6 models" answer and yes, three of those you quote were the ones she mentioned (BB's and the LX you quote). I mean, I knew it was time for a phone....I just didnt want to buy the wrong one.

I now know my contract is up in July. Maybe this whole issue will be over with Verizons policies by then too. I am not one to want a ton of features on my cell. My other gadgets are a different story. The Verizon phones that do allow this are super expensive. I would be perfectly happy with my current phone, if the D3 allowed me to manually enter (and label) 10 or so contacts. I do not need 200. So rather than buying a $400 dollar phone, I would rather trash the D3 and buy a nicer unit. THis D3 was installed by the dealer as an upgrade to a factory stereo for my new car purchase....so I didnt get much choice.

About the D3 and its user friendly design......I am VERY savvy when it comes to technology. I have been amazingly frustrated with the D3. For one, the screen shots in my Owners Manual do not even match the user interface of the D3....not by a long shot. I have no idea when my D3 was produced, but I would guess as an early model, one where the change over from an earlier design was still in affect...or something. I am also amazed that a lot of the paragraphs and instructions lead you to x page....where you read and read...only to find out it is sending you to y page for the same issue.....then so on and so on.... I also found that many times, when it gives an instruction in writing, it starts off with "push x button" rather than starting from the beginning menu.....so you are sitting there going..."where is that damned button..I dont see it." I realize that every single function cannot be illustrated from the start up screen..but there has to be a better way...such as "From the Navi Menu, push x."

I am so frustrated with the D3, I am already researching alternative units. unfortunately, I am reading a lot of frustration from other models and other companies as well.

Can anyone speak to other units that are stars on the market.....price is not an issue.

    Toytaco, thanks again.

  8. Is the bluetooth two-way or whatever? As in, can you bring up your contacts list on the screen and make a call?

Do some research on this forum under this topic....a LOT of people have trouble connecting with bluetooth at all. Many of those who do connect, still have trouble transferring their phone book contacts to the D3. Especially if you are a Verizon customer. I for one, (finally) got my Verizon Motorola V325 to work flawlessly, but I have never been able to get the address book into the D3. Its a pain in the ass.....but I still like it when calls come in while driving. Very nice.

When using the iPod, you never have to touch the iPod right? Its all just from the screen? As in, going threw the playlists ect. Also, is it ok to just always leave the iPod plugged in and in the glove compartment? I dont plan on ever using the iPod outside of the car.

This works unless you use the iPod for video. I do not do this, but I have read many discussions on this forum, that say that the video portion will work....but not without some wrinkles. Just a warning to do your research.

  9. Since this is about Verizon, I thought I would tie in another discussion thread:

    http://www.avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12539

This thread states that Verizon phones, with the exception of about 4-6 models issued over the last few years, does not allow wireless transfer of data using bluetooth technology and therefore MOST Verizon phones will not transfer your phone book to the D3.

It also states that there is a good chance Verizon will reverse this blocking policy this year.

  10. I just spent two hours with a Verizon rep., who accompanied me to my truck to work on the D3. Here is what I learned.

    1. I did indeed have my Motorola V325 set up to power bluetooth off automatically if it did not connect with another device within x minutes. I was able to find the set up feature that allows it to stay on permanently. The drawback is shorter battery life.

    2. This rep, a reputable friend of mine who has worked in the wireless industry for almost 14 years, told me that Verizon (she is a regional exec.), does indeed intentionally block wireless data transfer via bluetooth so they can make more money selling ringtones, etc (thus preventing people from buying them and sharing). However, she did mention that Verizon is involved in a lawsuit because of these blocking policies and that she has been told wireless transfer will be allowed within the 2008 year.

    3. She also mentioned about 4-6 phones which were produced with wireless transfer "allowed," one of which was the Blackberry Pearl. The others I do not remember models numbers. She acknowledged that my phone the V325 does not allow my telephone book to be transmitted to the D3.

    4. Now that the bluetooth power on function has been properly set up, I h ave successfully been able to get into my truck and within a minute or so, have the D3 acknowledge the V325, and connect to it with no additional work.

I am very happy about that, but I am sorely disappointed that there is no way to edit the name of one of the 6 presets. IMO, the lack of ability to edit/add a name/label to any preset is just pure failure. Especially when industry engineers know darn well that bluetooth is a great, albeit less than perfect, technology and compatibility is a known issue.

Thank you to all those that responded.

  11. I have a new F150 and just had the D3 installed by the dealership. My truck came with a factory rear camera, but when the D3 went in, they did not connect the rear camera, to the D3. I assume this would have been (should have been) no big deal. The rear camera works as per factory spec, and shows up in the rear view mirror. However, the D3 has this option, plus the screen is larger and easier to read in the sunlight.

Has any other Ford pickup owner with a factory camera and D3 had their rear view camera connected to the D3? If so, do you know if there were any issues, special considerations etc?

    Thanks

  12. Neither can I. I am now convinced that it is the Verizon Motorola cellphone I own. But this thread is not about transfering the address book. It is about what to do if you know you cannot transfer it.

    Huh?

Well I spent hours today working with the D3, my phone and the owners manual for the D3 and BTB-2000. I noticed that you can manually add a few numbers into your "preset" area, I think there are 6 slots.

    My question is this.....

I am able to add numbers, but that is all. I cannot associate a name with each number. So my ONLY available option is to either manually dial each number every single time I want to use bluetooth in my truck, or memorize the number of the preset? Truth is, I do not have all six of my friends telephone numbers memorized. So when the bluetooth rings and I see 123-456-7890 calling, I have no idea who it is. Surely to God there is a way to edit/assign a name to each of these presets??????

To add insult to injury, there is a "Name/Number" button which toggles between name and number. Since I have not (been able to) assigned any names to each number, when I push the NAME button, each of the six presets shows their individual labels as "NO NAME".

    WTF???

I tell you, each time I get into the truck, I have to turn on the cell phones bluetooth function, then I have to make the cell phone discoverable, then I have to hope the D3 autoconnects......so far it has not.....hell....by this time I could have manually made a phone call. Is all ths BT stuff really worth it. YES YES I know my old phone needs to be updated.....

I will probably go buy a new phone....but gosh..one techo purchase perpetuates another and another and another.

Am I doing something wrong or is there really no way to add a name label to each of tghe six presets?

  13. Hi all.

I just had the D3 installed in my 2008 F150 pickup. I have read dozens of pages on this forum concerning this one hack, but I still have a couple of questions and comments.

    1. No one who has installed this unit AND posted has commented on if the factory mute function works correctly after the hack. Someone asked about that function. The function I am referring to is the ability to hold down the volume knob continuously and after a second or two, the sound mutes. Reply if you know the answer.

    2. I would also like to know if, after perofrming this hack, there are any other muting problems. Others have asked this question, but I still have not seen an answer. Problems such as the BT-Tel properly muting audio with an incoming call? Others issues?

    3. Should the BT work correctly (with the additional BT module installed) with or without the hack (i.e., as per factory install)? Let me explain....I see no reason that, if one were to not have the parking brake applied in a "by the book" install, the BT menu items/buttons would not be accessible. Well, when I select BT-TEL the screen that pops up afterwards is 100% blank except the clock and tel icon in the upper left. Does not sound correct to me. And yes I do have the BT module installed.

    4. A question about the hack: Please pardon my ignorance, but am I correct in saying that the mute wire (in its new slot), and the parking brake wire (in its factory location) both have to be grounded?

    5. Can the mute wire, parking brake and unit's main ground wire all be grounded at the same location (or even spliced together to a longer wire and then grounded)?

    One last thing.....

    6. For the person above who asked about a on/off switch for this bypass. My installer did just that......my unit is not grounded to the parking brake. It is wired to a toggle switch. But, believe it or not......I have no idea where the switch is.....yeah I know....wetawded. I called him up and he told me he installed so many units that he forgot where my hidden button is in my truck. Now I have to drive back to him 45 mins from home (each way) just for him to show me the button. Ridiculous. But I must tay the rest of the install looks great.

Chow for now..sorry for the novel.
