  1. You're assuming throwing a silent error/exception is less costly than reading a 0kb file. And that it causes no other side effects (memory leaks etc.)

Sorry.. my nerd is showing..

    -dp

Yeah, but wav files have headers describing the format of the sound. If you just substitute a 0kb file, you probably have the same errors. In fact, if the programmers check for file existence before opening, it probably would be faster to delete than to have a 0kb file.

  2. I would hazard a guess that iPod Classics will not output video as well, but someone else will need to confirm that.

Video worked on my 160GB iPod Classic before the firmware update. I assume it still does, but I haven't tried. Video isn't very useful in the car for me.

  3. i put the update folder on a card but it wouldnt load up the update when i turned the car on. does it have to be an sd card becuase i was using a micro sd card inside the sd adapter and it wouldnt boot the update. maybe thats the reason why? cant take the micro sd?

I did my update with 2 micro-sd's. One 2GB micro-sd and one 4GB micro-sdhc (one for each copy step).

  4. On mine, the leftmost box went away when I was in 2d mode and didn't come back. Don't know why. Now that I've done the firmware update, both boxes are there in both 2d and 3d mode. That has to be the easiest bug fix ever, I don't know what was in the engineers minds when they let this go.

The navigation portion is written by a third party, iGo. Updating that portion may be more difficult for Pioneer. They may have to make a new contract or go through other administrative hassles.

  5. Just updated. The fixes are welcome. Bluetooth works fairly well now. Seems like they turned down the mic sensitivity, so you have to talk a little louder, but it is understandable now. Here a a few things not yet mentioned.

When playing music (at least from an ipod) a small album art icon is shown on the map screen. I think this is new.

Placing calls still switches to the map screen.

Some of my settings were lost on update. I had to set AV1 back to iPod.

  6. I've noticed a couple times my screen goes from my current location., starts zooming out, and never stops until i see the whole earth, then my screen is all black.

    [snip]

    Anyone else had this happen?

Yes, it has happened a few times on my F700BT when switching from 3D to 2D. Switching back to 3D and then 2D again fixed it.

  7. I have not had music from the SD cut out, but I have had a more annoying and potentially dangerous thing happen on my F700BT while playing music from the SD card.

I was playing music from the SD card. The music stopped (I think when it finished playing all mp3s in the folder). The interface completely locked up and was unresponsive. Then there were several half-second blasts of music from the CD source at seemingly full volume (ignoring the current volume set with the knob). This continued at a rate of a half-second blast every 5 seconds or so until the disc eject button was pressed. The eject button worked and the interface became responsive with nothing appearing to be wrong.

  8. F-series model: F700BT

    Phone make/model: Samsung T519 Trace

Ease of connection: Moderate. Had to try a few times. Had to turn on bluetooth visibility on my phone and leave it on or it won't connect automatically when I get into the car.

Phone book transfer: Partial. Looks like it transfered the names but no numbers. When I select a contact it doesn't do anything. Might be related to dialing issue below.

Sound quality: Good on my end, bad for the other party. After adjusting the mic for an optimal position (the close edge of the sun visor), the sound on their end is just tolerable at speed.

Comments: Will not initiate calls from the unit. It worked once or twice, but now just hangs where it is supposed to dial. Have had it fail to mute the music once or twice when dialing.

  9. I installed an F700BT and I am experiencing issues similar to what everyone else has reported. Slow boot times and delayed button presses, poor bluetooth quality, and static-filled voice prompts.

I am trying to figure out if I should return the unit for a refund, as recommended by the Pioneer CSR I contacted. The CSR disavowed any knowledge of coming software updates and claimed "it could be a very long time before we have any information to share". The seller (Globazar via Amazon.com) claims to have sold around 100 units without any issues.

If it was reported that most units work properly, I would probably attempt to get a replacement, so I can keep all the wires installed. Otherwise, I will have to go through the effort of removing the unit. The unit took a long time to install because I ran the GPS wire under the carpet, seats, and trim pieces. I am dreading having to remove it.
