it's a 2004 Expedition - I've never done ANY car stereo work
I have looked through the N2 service manual PDF and saw on the Keyboard PCB diagram (pg 72/73), the 'wide', 'angle+', and 'angle-' switches are all grouped together on one circuit (I guess they're circuits!) which happens to connect to switches 2 & 4 from the 'select' item (joystick). Since they're all bunched & together, my logic tells me there is probably a problem right there. That's all the detective work I've been able to do today online. I haven't taken the keyboard (faceplate) apart to see how everything connects, but the first thing that comes to mind is replacing that set of buttons ( page 17, part # 68 "button" on the exploded keyboard diagram - pioneer part CAC8434 - [url]https://www.ued.net/ued/addItems.do?itemCode=PNRCAC8434[/url] ).
The last thing I wanna do is try to solder on any of the boards or stuff like that. If there's no mildly simple solution, I will only be out $200 or so to get it repaired at Pioneer. Any thoughts on the button replacement approach? -
I have looked around all day online for possible fixes on my +/- issue - I was hoping there would be a magic button sequence to reset the hardware, but nothing yet - I found an AVIC-N2 service manual and it's extremely technical, so it doesn't offer any pinpoint help for my latest symptoms - if I would have saved the calibration settings correctly the first time in, the +/- buttons would not have failed (I believe) - I also noticed the 'WIDE' button now does not work for the aspect ratio of the AV video - those 3 buttons are the only thing failing on my system right now - I had this unit installed by my dealer again (after my first N1 was stolen), but I figured it looks like Pioneer will fix anything for $200, so I may as well try to fix what I can - I have no idea how to pull the unit, so I will have to pay for that as well - I have a trip in december that will require its use, and it will work fine as it is - unless I discover a solution, I will pull the unit early next year & send it in for repair

I fixed this issue, but now I have another - I posted over here: http://avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=17778#17778

I had the same problem but figured out how to fix it with a side effect - the +/- buttons on the unit do not work so the screen in slammed back against my dash when open - I got into the secret service menu on my N1:
- hit eject & reset at the same time
- release 'reset'
- screen went in & came back out
- screen said "press reset" or something to that effect
- i used the joystick - up, up, down, down, [and then pushed in the joystick to 'enter']
- goes into the service menu - select top option for touch screen
- in touch screen menu, select 1st [top] item with * next to it
- using your fingernail, trace the edges of the screen, and the X,Y values will change to reflect the tracing (I did this a few times to make sure it read my finger well)
- hit the "BAND" button [acts as 'back']
- select the second option down
- select the cross on the screen each time it appears - it will do a column on the right, middle, left, then one final offset just right of the left column - then it should say 'ok' or something like that
- I then selected a menu option (sorry I don't specifically remember the title) with 'Confirm calibration' or something like that in the title - apparently this saved the new settings
- I then removed the faceplate to shut down the unit and put it back on - it went through a few startup sequences and then, after resetting some basics, the unit worked fine (I did it another time where I turned off the engine instread of removing the faceplate)
I tried this a few days ago and didn't do the confirm selection (nothing looked logical) and I was able to side-scroll through the main menu pages (3 of them) - when I was done i hit the 'reset' button, and that didn't help anything, but the system rebotted and behaved exactly as it did before (with the screen offset problem still there)
when I tried it this time, the +/- buttons on the fron immediately stopped working, and while I am able to scroll up and down in the system menu with the joystick, I cannot go to the other 2 menu pages! so this is the last thing to fix, and I have saved myself $200 - hopefully I can find a fix - otherwise.....I may be out $200!!
I hope this helps -
You only have to ask once. Posting the same question across different threads is a good way to get ignored. No offence, just trying to help.
I posted in this Z1 hack/mod forum to try to get help from people who wouldn't see my post in the N1 forum - for example, I am a member of the benzworld.org forum, but I only look in the SLK section, so I wouldn't see a similar question in the SL section - all I need is a simple answer from people who have obviously been in the menu and saved their settings! If I can learn how it worked on a Z1, I might be able to figure it out on an N1 - thanks for your help!

what steps does the service menu list when an adjustment has been made??? interesting that it wouldn't be a prominent item in the manual! I hope someone else has some experience with this.

I got into this on my AVIC-N1 and made some changes, but i need to save & exit - I couldn't figure out how to do that - anyone successfully made changes & exited the service menu? I know it will be slightly different on my unit, but at least I will have something to look for if I have an example - thanks

I was able to access the hidden service menu on my AVIC-N1 from instructions in this forum (thanks to all you hacker-types!) - I needed to get in there to adjust the touch screen - Pioneer had said it would be $200 to fix after I have it pulled by an installer which would only add $$ to the repair - I found how to recalibrate the screen in the secret menu (it was tracking a half inch to the left on all screens - I couldn't scroll in address book or POI menus!!) - apparently the "BAND" button on the face is the 'back' button - my problem is I couldn't save my settings & exit - I ended up hitting reset to get it to boot up again, but that obviously lost the new settings
does anyone know how to save & exit from the service menu screens? I have edited BIOS settings on my PCs but this was not an obvious setup
any help would be appreciated - I don't want to be out any money for something as simple to fix as this
