So it looks like you just had a bad 60M disk. I think you just confirmed that a N3 brain will indeed make an N1 completely up to date.

I think you will need the CNDV-60M disks to get the updated interface, but that hardware config *should* work. Well, based off what was said in this thread.

So whats going on here? Has anybody even tried to swap the N1 brain with an N3 brain?

The interface on the N1 is so crappy, i doubt I'd be the first one to try this.

I think you have to remove the case. Follow the N1 hardware bypass for removing the case and look for the switch.

I was mostly wondering of the guy on ebay is just swapping the controller chip as GnatGoSplat describes in the post i linked.

I'm aware the swap is considered "difficult". I was planning to practice on cheaper electronics first and get the technique down. But before i go into "Solder Ninja" training, i just wanted to know if that was it.

I just recently installed the N3 software, performed the bypass, and installed the ipod and xm modules.

The ipod interface is so offensive and crappy that I'm seriously considering the smd rework. I'd just like to know if anybody has actually proven if this theory is sound.
