1. Been a while since I posted - glad to see you guys still around.

All of a sudden, my Z1 doesn't want to pair properly with my LG eNV phone. I've done numerous attempts to re-pair (no pun intended) the two but something is obviously famunkee'd up.

Is there some way to clear the BT paired devices list discreetly or must I do a reset?

If a reset is necessary should I do level 3 or 4?

Does resetting at 3 remove my custom screen?

If yes, would you please post a link to the directions on how to put it back - I've been searchin and had no luck yet tho, I'm sure its still here.

Thanks

Joe

2. Another point to consider - one of the reasons I chose the camera I did (before understanding the reversing image issue) was its metal, watertight housing and metal mounting hardware.

My camera is mounted below my bumper alongside the trailer hitch. It gets the full brunt of road grunge and spary from the underside of the truck as it travels down the road and I wanted it to last in this adverse environment.

It did fine on my recent trip to SLC through snow, slush, sand, gravel and salt. Time will tell if this decent performance will be maintained.

3. The remote turn on stays active on purpose. Its designed to still give you navigation instructions even when you have it sourced off. That leaves you a couple of choices--fix your noise problems OR install a switch on the remote turn on lead letting you control when its on or off

I guess that makes some kind of sense. Having voice navigation instructions available all the time, even when no navigation is occurring seems a bit extreme.

As for "fixing" my noise problems, I'm not sure how. The diesel in the F-350 apparently puts out a lot of noise. I've got all the power wires running in a straight line to the amps under the carpet, a single ground block bolted to the chassis for all amps installed within a foot of them, and noise filters at the inputs side of the amps on the shielded signal wires that are run under the doors on the driver side. I suppose I could ground the shields on the signal wires but don't hold high hope for getting rid of "all" the noise. Its not noticeable when the head unit is playing music unless it is set very low. But, when it is "hibrinating" it is audible.

4. The camera is a Performance Teknique ICBM-5205. Here it is for $89 which is about 15 less than I paid at al local shop.

Again this camera does NOT reverse the image so on the Z1 left is right and v.v. - it takes some getting used to but isn't really critical since I turn my head around and look behind me when I back up.

I'm going to have to get a different camera tho for my cab over camper - one which doesn't reverse because I can't see behing it by turning around.

Cheers,

Joe

5. Over Xmas week, I took a road trip from SF to Salt Lake City and back. I ran the Z1 alongside my M5 garmin PDA just for fun and to learn more about the Z1. I've been using the M5 for about a year and a half and basically find it works very well as a nav tool. This is a ONE ROAD route - highway 80 all the way so I figured all things being equal, I'd get a good sense of the strengths and weaknesses. So, fwiw, here's some basic observations. I know this is kind of like apples and oranges, but what the heck.

The Z1's estimated trip times were off by over 7 hours from the getgo. That's about a 50-60% error - pretty poor for a one road route. The M5 has always been incredibly accurate in its time estimation algorythm. As the trip progresses, the estimated arrival time in the Z1 got closer but was never reliable. Also, the M5 has numerous choices for displaying time to next turn, dist. to next, and many other options I've come to love. I didn't find 'em in the Z1 (I'm still very low on the learning curve - they may be there but ....) so, I'll likely continue running 'em in tandem.

The Z1's larger screen and typeface make it much easier to read than the M5's small pda screen. Also, the split screen feature gave me a much better intuitive feel for "where in the heck am i". The Z1 also seems to show more local streets in a more clear manner than the M5. I've never been able to figure out how the M5 decides which street names to display and often it makes no sense - arterials left out, obscure streets displayed. The Z1 display rocks! Finally, the touch screen user interface on the Z1 is much safer and easier to use than the stylus of the M5

Once I arrived in SLC, the Z1's routing to POIs seemed clumsy and its find features didn't work too well with the city's grid address system. I never did find addresses like 900 South 172 East. Granted this is an easy town to navigate without a GPS because of its grid setup, but at times, I was a little frustrated.

Adding via points in both units is a multi click operation that's way too difficult to do in motion. Vias come in handy for planning pit stops on a long freeway drive when you display time/distance to next Via info. Neither nav system seems to have the location of highway dept rest stops in their database - a gaping oversight IMHO.

The Garmin database of POIs (even my 2 year old set) seemed to be much more comprehnensive than the Z1s. I stayed at Snowbird's "Iron Blossam Lodge" which I couldn't fine in the Z1 - it was in the M5. Also, I wasn't able to find "Alta, Utah" in the Z1 but that may have been operator error. Also, I wasn't able to find ski shops in this Olympic ski town in the Z1 either. Duhhhh.

I know its silly , but, I sure wish there was a way to synch the M5's phone book with the Z1's address book . Both do Bluetooth but in very limited ways. My Samsung A990 worked flawlessly with the Z1 but wasn't able to synch its fonebook via BT.

The Z1 sound was great in the 4 door cab of my F-350. I've upgraded the speakers w/Infinity References (I like the sound better than the Kapas) and installed the tweets in the front doors. I've got 2 @ 200 amp powered 6" Bazooka tubes on a big cap that do the bass very well and a 4 channel DaVinci amp that runs pretty clean. The Z1 had adequate but somewhat clumsy EQ controlls that I tuned with a studio musician friend who's ear is a couple light years beyond mine. That said, once set up the sound was really fine.

XM was killer. The iPod interface was slow, but tolerable using smart play lists. I have yet to insert a CD into the unit. Radio reception was passable when I used it (hardly ever). The unit's backup camera display seems weak (sadly, I bought one thats not reversing so right is left and v.v.) and dark. Often hard to see even in bright daylight. Might be a function of the camera, but hard to know. It wasn't cheap.

And, after looking at my NO BOZOS background after 12 hours on the road I still chuckle. Thanks again for the instructions.

Peace out.

Joe

6. I've had the Z1 installed and working now for a month or so and am pretty impressed with its performance, sound etc. Except for some of the common problems discussed here I'm a satisfied customer. And, I gotta say this group has been GREAT in helping and I thank everyone for their input.

Now, my next question is "how do I turn things off?". When I select the off option in the AV screen it shuts down the sound, but I don't seem to be getting a remote signal that turn my amps off. I haven't checked it with a meter, but, I know tha amp responded to the remote signal with its previous head unit. That means I live with a little bit of hiss/noise from my system's imperfections when I need a moment of peace and quiet.

I have looked pretty carefully throught the manual and in the forum but haven't seen much on "off". Any help or ideas about this would be a great help.

thanks,

Joe

7. It was an RTFM problem all along - the polarity setting fixed the issue.

I don't know if its me but I find the instructions in the manual for this unit a bit obtuse and confusing. I know its a complex piece of technology with many features and options, but, WHERE is a simple menu tree?

8. Mysterious Issue: The backup camera not engaging properly when truck put into reverse. It does not go on until you take take the vehicle OUT of reverse and go back into park. Also, when you start the vehicle in park, the camera is on.

I connected the reverse sensing wire from the AVIC-Z1 harness into a wire that went + when the car was put into reverse. It was the same color code as the wires at the tail light reverse bulb. I tapped from the wire coming out the back of the Reverseing lamps relay behind the central junction box (AKA - drivers side dash fuse box). Prior to tapping, I tested the wire for proper operation and it indeed went + when the vehicle was shifted into reverse.

I'de be very grateful for your help on this. I'll be opening the dash again in the next day or 2 to install the new steering wheel interface so I could do more tracing (fixing hopefully) then.

9. Thanks for the links. I had done a search on "remote" and "remote problems" but too many unrelated messages came up and i never saw those.

As for the problems I'm having, they're not sunlight related - I was testing it at night and holding the steering wheel remote right in front of the unit (not attached to the steering wheel) so there was direct line of sight. So .... other insights ? The unit worked, then stopped, then worked then stopped etc. I was using the volume control figuring that was a simple signal that would work in most circumstances on the Z1. Could be a bad unit I suppose. I guess the only way to test that woudl be to try another.

Thanks,

joe

10. Has anyone had their steering wheel remote work intermitantly? I got my Z1 installed today and started using the remote. It seems to work for 10 or 15 clicks and then, the Z1 ignores it for a while. It starts working again after a couple of minutes. Its is VERY strange behavior.

I'de appreciate knowing any basic info on the remote too - like, is it an infra red transmit, radio transmit? or ??? Also, what is the model number for the "regular" remote? My unit did not come with any remote and if the steering wheel unit keeps acting up I gotta figure out what else to try.

thanks

11. In this thread:
http://avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3063

dwhitley0381 suggests that there's a way to direct wire the existing steering wheel controls to the Z1 in a Ford F-150.

Here's my question: Do you know if and how can this be done in an F-350? I was going to try a Peripherals PEZWIX interface to do the job, but if it can be done directly then I might as well give it a shot. He intimated that Pioneer made the nav unit for the F-150 (NOT offered in the Super Duties - heaven only knows why not) and that that made the job doable.

So, if you can help, please let me know - specifics are always nice.
Thanks in advance.

12. Does the IP-bus always need to be hooked up as a loop? Must both in (black) anAND out (blue) wired be attached to the Z1 and then go around through the peripherals (i-pod & XM) ?

It appears that I am one bus wire wire short to do this so. I figured there'd be 2 long wires for the hideaway XM reciever which I've mounted under the driver's seat but there was only 1 long bus wire in the box. So, now I'm confused about how the bus works . Any 411 would be VERY helpful as I've almost completed the install.

Thank,

joe

13. WRONG?????? Hmmm, its hard to consider how it could be wrong - its hard enough admitting I need directions to begin with. Gotta give that some thought.

Anyway, after spending the past 3 days up to my elbows in the guttet out cab of my "new" '06 F-350 it looks like I'll be firing up the whole she-bang tomorrow. Wish me luck.

The system will be the Z1 w/bluetooth interface, i-Pod interface (yes, I know its weeknesses - I've found the key to be playlists), XM radio - Go A's, rearview camera, a Da-Vinci 4 channel amp (cleanest amp I've ever owned - sweet), 2 @ 200 amp powered 6" Bazooka tubes behind the rear seats w/ a 1.2 M mf cap to keep the bass from clipping and to conrol this beast, a Peripheral's PEZWIX interface to re-energize the factory steering wheel buttons (hopefully the Z1 has an infrared reciever ?????) and finally, the Pioneer steering wheel remote to control the nav unit on the fly.

Of course, the Z-1 will be modded to defeat the lockouts thanks to everyone who figured it all out HERE on this board. THANKS!

BTW, I dont understand much of what's going on in the hack forum where folks are trying to discover how to access the HD, but .... where do i send my donation. I hope you guys get it dialed. Being able to actually use the things we buy these days is getting harder and harder. Its folks like you all on this board who are putting FREE back into FREEDOM where it belongs!

Cheers,

joe

14. I'm in the process of installing the Z1 into my '06 F-350 6.0 diesel and have located all of the pull offs for the harness OK. However, there's one wire on the second harness (w/backup video in & rear video outs) that says "Guide On". Its yellow w/black stripe and has a female spade crimp connector.

I have scoured the manual and the web site and can't seem to find out what that's used for. Is it for the auxiliary guide speaker? I'de apprciate any 411 on the purpose of this wire.

I'm sure it will probably be a .....dohhhhh once I "get it".

Thanks,

joe

15. Anyone know where you can get Pioneer's IP bus specifications? I checked all over the web and pioneer sites w/ google and onsite searching and found nothing substantial.

My main question is: does it matter what position each component is hooked up on the bus? ie: does the i-POD interface have to go into the XM reciever or can it be hooked up the other way around? My guess is it doesn't but ..... don't want new fried components all over the floor of the garage.

Thanks in advance for the 411.

16. Thanks to everyone for all the great AVIC-Z1 info - especially ducatiboy for the energy and time for putting the site together.

Here's a quick word of advice to consider this if you're in the small subset of folks w/a cabover camper on your truck. On my F-350 and had to put the antennas outside on the front hood to get signal when the camper's installed. I ran the wires through the firewall where there's a nifty foil sticker covering a hole that's just right for pass throughs - the foil can be stuck back over the wires to keep wind out.
