here's an update:
I THINK it is voltage related . . . .
I am still having intermittent problems with charging even with the new Apple AV cable. It seems (note I said seems) like it may be a voltage issue. When I start my car after sitting for a few days (and using ther battery, car lighting, underglow, etc.) I get the charging error message. However after running the car for a few m inutes I can connect/charge just fine.
Can anyone confirm this????

Well, after much testing and talking to the Apple engineers I have an update for you all.
1. all iPhones with OS3 work completely with the Pioneer F series
2. all iPhones (including the 3GS) will charge when connected ****caveats below
a. iPhone 3GS REQUIRES currently available Apple branded AV cables (PIONEER cables are NOT compatible with charging the 3GS)
b. using an additional USB extender cable KILLS charging capability (for the 3GS)
I found upon testing that adding a USB extender cable (Belkin, GE, and others) somehow kills the charging capability of the iPhone 3GS, but not the first generation or the 3G. This was tested at the headunit itself. However if you plug the AV cable directly into the headunit (without extender) the iPhone 3GS charges fine. This however is NOT the case with the Pioneer branded cable - it will not charge the iPhone 3GS at all in any configuration.
All other current iPods and iPhones including the 3G do CHARGE and operate correctly regardless of the iPhone OS.
in case you are wondering I have tested this myself in "real world" conditions and have conferred with Apple regarding this issue.
I have noticed on some F series decks that a reset on the headunit is required after the OS3 update for the iPhone and iPod. This is a random, unduplicateable issue.
Please feel free to PM me with any questions or comments......

yes the apple cable works with iPhones updated to OS3 because it doesn't physically change anything . . .
the apple cable is better though
-
pioneer will not release a new cable - not profitable
current apple av cable will not charge
btw - just because something is listed as compatible does mean that it is or that it completely is!!! I am an IT professional for the past 21 years and can attest to that!!!
let's end the discussion until Monday when I can definitive word from my Apple Engineering department
-
yes, but does it CHARGE the iPhone 3GS?
here is my reasoning: if the Apple cable works with/and charges previous models which may have had a different charging pin config (such as original iPhone and the iPhone 3G), it would suffer the same charging issues as the Pioneer cable as they are identical in their pin config.
-
I think they will need to update that cable as well although I have not tested it . . . if the charging pins have changed it would affect the current apple cable as well since it did work with the 3G ...
-
that I can NOT agree with . . . I am currently using the Pioneer cable and it DOES charge most current gen iPods (Except those that used firewire connectivity - charging pin-out is different) and all iPhone except for the 3GS.
-
yes it is compatible - it will work for all control and av functions. I am trying to find out if charging is supported on the new 3GS.
"Dear Clark,
Thank you for using Apple Expert Exchange. We have scheduled a callback regarding case number 127921739. An Apple Engineer will call you on Monday, June 22, between 9:30 and 9:45 a.m. Pacific."
that's the latest I've gotten from Apple . . . I'll keep this updated as I learn more
-
just to clarify . . .
All av functions, all phone functions work fine with OS 3.0 and/or the iPhone 3GS.
there IS an issue with charging compatability and the iPhone 3GS with at least the pioneer iPod cable. I have yet to confirm with Apple engineers, but I think they may have made some pinout changes on the dock connector itself . . .
I will update as I find out more
-
I believe Apple changed the charging pin assignment in dock connector. I am planning on calling Apple to confirm this. If so that will mean buying a new av cable from Apple directly once they release an iPhone 3GS version.
I would NOT expect Pioneer to release a compatible cable for at least a year or at all. It's just a numbers game - how many users (what percent) actually have/use the iPhone 3GS? It's probably such a small marketshare that they may just let Apple produce them.
so that means WHITE Apple av cables instead of the Pioneer black . . . LOL
-
btw I wanted to add . . .
NO COMPATABILITY ISSUES with iPhone OS 3.0 and the F900BT or any 700BT that I have encountered at any rate (I have tested with both 8GB iPhone 3G & 16GB iPhone 3GS phones on 13 different decks).
you MAY need to do a reset on the deck itself if you are having any unusual notices or connection issues (this was required on 2 out of 13 decks and all decks had latest 2.0 firmware installed).
my deck is modded with my custom startup screen, my custom designed image.res, and running cmh928's last build with latest map upgrades
-
I think you need to go to the av setting and make sure input 1 is set to iPod . . . .
as far as the charging issue / notice goes WITH THE NEW IPHONE 3GS - I get the same thing and it will NOT charge (but otherwise works the same as my 3G). I think they might have changed the pin assignment in the cable. I am planning on calling apple to find out if there is a new av cable for the 3GS because my 3G charges fine. I am currently using the pioneer ipod cable. I am thinking a NEW av cable (probably from apple itself) will probably fix the charging issue . . .

doh!!!
I am running 4.2008 maps
sorry guys it's been a long couple of days!!!
-
ok it's been a long day . . .
stock AVIC900 is iGo 8.0 - correct?
10.2008 maps works with stock nav software - correct? (I have replaced mine on my stock 900BT with those from the 10.2008 map thread and they seem to work just fine - can you confirm DJdisturbed?)
these POIs will work with stock nav software and updated maps? (Yes I guess that's a given)
I am running a 900BT with cmh's MSN data.zip / mods with updated 10.2008 maps and customized image.res.

for part 13
http://rcinfo.us/download/CONTENT_NA_2008.4.part13.rar
This will be up for 24hrs
Clark
btw it is already renamed
-
thanks - downloaded
you can remove the link . . .
btw, do I need to rename it before unzipping? - don't want to corrupt it
thanks again!!!
-
any idea where to get part 13 rar? - the download link no longer has the file (says it's been remover or violated tos).
I managed to get parts 1-12, just need #13
thanks
-
thanks for all your help!!!!
total brainfart - recompliling image.res as 7z then renaming (within 7zip) worked perfectly!!!!
let the customizing begin
-
ahhh
I think I see my problem . . .
I rezipped the image.res file in zip format instead of .7z - I'll try it this evening after work.
Thanks a bunch!!!!
