I have concluded that for me the Navteq POI file for California seems to be missing too much and is probably why the files are so much smaller. BorisM recommended running both Navteq and TeleAtlas POIs for your main state but that would not fix the destination announce problem. Unless someone figures out a better way to fix this or comes up with better POI files etc. I will just forgo using the left/right destination announce at this time. I am happy to have been able to help figure out why some were getting incorrect destination announce. Good luck to those of you that want to continue using this feature.

I just use both Navteq and TeleAtlas for the home state and a few around. Gives pretty good coverage.

We were discussing the left/right destination announce. With the Navteq POIs the announce seems to work very good, but Navteq does not have as many POIs. With the TeleAtlas POIs the left/right destination announce is a hit or miss situation with many wrong announces. N-S-E-W found that this seems to be due to the TeleAtlas POIs using longitude/latitude numbers that are not accurate enough and thus showing a POI that is in the middle of the street. using both sets would be great for having more POIs but would not fix the left/right announce.

I checked my POI search for Jo-Anns Fabric again today. With the California Navteq POIs I was not getting any California locations with the nearest showing 201 miles away in Yuma, Arizona. My other 49 states still had the TeleAtlas POI files. Once I put back my TeleAtlas California POI files I got 53 locations closer than the Yuma location. I did not check much else since this leads me to believe that the Navteq files are so much smaller due to having much less data in them.

I may decide to use both sets of files at some time but I have decided to forgo the left/right announce at this time.

It seems that the Navteq POIs have less POIs in it than the TeleAtlas POIs. I will test further today, but yesterday I went to search for a Joann's fabric to see where the nearest one around my area was (I know there are several). It only listed a few and if I remember correctly it said the nearest one was 201 miles away. With the TeleAtlas POIs I got quite a few, the closest being just a few miles away (although that one no longer exist).

I ended up going to one that I knew where it was but I don't think that was the closest one. Since it was not in the POIs the Nav was no help.

I will put back my TeleAtlas POIs for California and try again. If I find that too much is missing from the Navteq POIs I will stick with the TeleAtlas POIs and forgo using the left/right destination announce. As it is the Nav nearly always brings me to me location on the right anyway.

I am getting about a 50/50 correct to incorrect ratio on my limited testing here in the North Orange County and West San Bernardino County areas of Southern California. Maybe this is why Pioneer did not turn it on. I will leave it off due to this and would prefer it not be on by default but could live with having to change it if it is implemented like that. If possible an on/off choice in the settings would be the way to go. JMO.

My incorrect left/right destination announce seems to have been fixed by replacing the stock TeleAtlas California POI files with the Navteq California POI file.

Thanks to N-S-E-W for helping me work through this issue to figure out what the problem was.

I hope nobody takes my comments too seriously because I love all the hard work the modders around here do. I am just giving my opinion as to whether or not I like a particular feature or not and how I think some should be implemented. Some may agree with my analysis or suggestions and some may not but it is no big deal. Thanks all.

I changed my California POI to the Navteq one you posted.

I did a new POI search for the Pep Boys with the Carl's Jr. via point and they both announced on the right as they are supposed to. I also tried direct address input and that worked correctly too.

I tried several other POI points in the area and they all worked correctly also so apparently the Navteq POIs are much better.

Now more questions:

1. Do you think the Navteq POIs have as many POIs in them because the TeleAtlas has two California files for a total size of 44.5 MB whereas the Navteq single file is only 7.6 MB?

2. Where can I download all of the Navteq US POIs that are hopefully up to date.

I am working with you right now to try and see if we can figure out anything to make this announce better. I understand what you are saying but am giving my opinion (and it is just that, my opinion not "denouncing") as to whether I think this is any good. If doing a POI search gives me incorrect announces at least half the time then in my opinion it is useless, but it may be valuable to others. That is something they have to decide.

I would work on this more if I had the time to dig into the coding but I don't have the time for that at present. I have even waited months to see how others progressed. I do give thanks and much appreciation to all for their great efforts. I would even give some a paypal donation if I could presently afford it.

I agreed that in many ways Pioneer screwed us my not implementing many features that they should have. You have done a lot of great work and I appreciate it so please don't take my comments the wrong way.

I know many cameras are incorrect, etc. but that is not a reason to tell me not to use them just because I find this not to my liking in its current state. In fact I had two red light cameras in my area say they were speed cameras with a 70 mph speed limit. I know they need to be changed and will have to do that if I want to continue to use it.

You are right that there is no perfect data.zip for my taste. If I want one that is exactly what I want then I will have to dig into the code and mod as I like, which I presently don't have time for.

More leg work on that Fry's location. It appears that when selecting the Fry's location through the POI's that it puts the destination in the middle of the east and west bound lanes. Yesterday I directly inputted the address and it announced the destination on the right. Today I selected Fry's through the POI's and it announced the location on the left. I then put Fry's as a via point and the inputted address as the destination. The via point wound up being about 180 feet ahead, but in the center of the east/west lanes. Below is a picture showing the via point flag in the center or median if there is one, and the destination flag in the center of the east bound lane. The bowling alley at 3364 E La Palma shows the flag well off the road on the right side. I haven't tried any other POI's, but it appears that direct address inputs will announce as correctly as the map data allows and the POI selections I would classify as hit or miss. I believe POI's are created by latitude/longitude entries.

I did more testing today with both locations I tested saying they were on the left instead of right but both were POI searches.

Here is exactly what I did today.

1. I deleted my flaskdisk and restored from backup so that I knew it was factory again.

2. I verified my maps are the same version as yours.

3. I put the hacked ezrider on my AVIC.

4. I modified my a copy of my original sys.txt fle to add the announce info then put it on the AVIC (F7010BT).

5. I did a POI search for Pep Boys 11980 Central Ave Chino, CA 91710 and added it as my destination since I previously tested that location with a wrong side announce.

6. I added, via POI search, Carl's Jr. 5295 Holt Blvd., Montclair, CA, 91763 as a via point.

Both locations announced as on the left instead of the right.

If they are using the latitude/longitude as you suggest and sounds plausible then that is just ridiculous.

Unless someone can figure out how to change that it looks like we are screwed.

When I approach Fry's is on the right but the destination announce says I reached my destination on the left. Obviously it knew it was on the right or it would not have told me to make a u-turn.

 

No matter if you approached from the east or west samantha said it was on the left each time? So far I haven't experienced anything like that. The only place it's been wrong is when my home address was entered, the map data had my house on the north side of the street so it said I reached my destination on the left. I then programmed my house with an even number and it's been right since. I'll have to try it coming from the other direction some time and see if there's a difference. Every where I've routed to it's been correct. Has any one else experienced something link vansmack2? BTW - There have been 150 downloads so far and one issue reported. Let's hear the good and the bad.

 

I entered the address and from the east it said you have arrived at your via point on the right. When I approached it from the west it had me make a u-turn and still said arrive on the right. The street numbers on the screen matched the destination address showing it would be on the right.

 

Check the street numbers as opposed to the announcement, the destination must announce the same side as the street numbers show. If the map data is wrong, the destination announcement will also be wrong.

 

FWIW- My maps are from the update cards. Tele Atlas, California 2008.10 [090508] running with the original hacked ezrider for 3.0.

I am running the stock maps from the Pioneer 3.02 update, which I believe are the same as what you listed above. I am running the stock ezrider, not the hacked one, so there is a difference.

I will try it with the hacked ezrider and see if that makes any difference.

Alex - Since this being is beta tested and you mentioned including it in your next set, you should be able to add the destination left/right code to the Pioneer.ini file located in the project config folder. This way, everyone who uses your zip won't have to use a modified sys.txt to have it.

As I said for the Fry's location, when approaching heading west it would tell me to go past Fry's make a u-turn then end up approaching Fry's heading East (due to the u-turn) and be told it was on the left. It would not tell me I arrived until I made the requested u-turn and go back like it wanted. I did not try turning u-turns off. Also there is a light to turn into the Fry's parking lot so the nav is a bit screwy for this.

I tried several other locations on my way home from Fry's and it was about 50/50. I can try some more and see what happens.

I was using the dpdurst flag mode and stock Samantha TTS voice. The only thing I did was added the line to my sys.txt file to enable the announce. Is there anything else that might need to be done?

Deleted Canada, Hawaii and Alaska mod and got the mod installed.

I found the ding before nav announces annoying and could not find a setting to disable it (maybe I missed it).

I used the flag version but found the clock too hard to read in that version, which would require a font color change if I stick with it.

Also when selecting a destination after POI search it does not let me see where it is on the map before selecting it as my destination like the stock Pioneer does. This may be because of the andr200 mod. I don't know because I hav not tried that yet.

Overall this is a fairly nice mod.

Update 11-26-2009:

N-S-E-W thinks this has to due with the POI search and what POIs are being used. He is using Navteq POIs and I am using the stock TeleAtlas POIs. I got his Navteq POIs and will try them today.

2nd Update 11-26-2009:

I tried the Navteq POIs for California and that resolved my left/right announce problem.

Tried to install your mod today and when trying to copy the gfx folder over it told me I was out of space and could not copy all files. Is there something I need to do before installing this.

I installed Diaftia's mod yesterday to check it out and that worked fine.

After your mod could not be completely installed I deleted the APL2 folder contents and restored from backup. I also deleted my userdata and restored from backup. I am now running on the factory version again. Pioneer official 3.02 update.

Let me know if you know anything I need to do.

I will probably try again tonight but at the moment I have other things to do.

I put your mod on today and now I have a questions.

1. Is Samantha the only voice profile you have? When I pressed that choice, nothing happened. I use Samantha so it does not matter to me.

2. How do I block a road section (like during construction) then later unblock it? A search did not yield an answer.

3. I think I remember you saying you were going to fix the main POI search that others mentioned already as bringing up local POIs and not what was searched for. Is this in your next release?

I clicked on the data.zip link on the first page and got the old version. Thanks for the info for the right one. I am running the official 3.02 software.

The left/right destination announce sounds like it should work with Samantha, which is the voice I use. I have not tried this mod yet but may try it soon.

I just finished loading Diaftia's hybrid mods, which include most of the same things, and yes I did a full My Flashdisk backup first. I even have My FlashDisk saved on my laptop and on 2 drives on my main PC.

I will have to do a few mods to get things just the way I like but at least I have some great mods to start with. I have waited months because I wanted to see how these mods progressed and what my final decision would be. Also I have not wanted to invest much time in my own modding yet.

+ Screen Off: in Navigation or Plan modes, long tap in lower left corner switches screen to black with clock.

Off topic but...

I do computer work but I am nowhere near Philly. I am in So Cal. I just started my own computer service but the Economy Sucks!!! big time here in So Cal so I am not getting many calls yet. I have to keep pounding the pavement (so to speak) to drum up business. Seems the people that do call want you to work virtually for free.

Lucky you got yours working. Mine died, update would not fix it and I had to get the unit replaced.

I have not even modded my unit yet (no time) but with the 3.0 update and maps plus all the possibilities here I have nothing to complain about.
