  1. So here is the question, and admittedly I haven't shopped for Nav units since I bought this one. Why would I or anyone else geeky enough to mod their unit consider another brand or model that costs 50-100% more than what we have? What features do some of the other manufacturers have that make their expensive units worth the money? What is the "killer app" that I don't have, that some other manufacture might make me drool for?

Are you afraid of missing something you are not aware of?

There are things which are not perfect in AVIC. For example the integration of iGO, bluetooth and the rest of the software. Things that make life easier:

Why are the contacts in AVIC so crippled? Using an SQL database to store a name and a phone number. Looks oversized or not finished! No adress, no picture,...

Would be nice to set a contact as a destination for navigation.

Why can i set a dynamic volume for the navigation only and not for radio/iPod/DVD?

Why no cover pic of my mp3 from SD card/USB?

    Why no VR in europe?

I think it doesn't need a killer application, a flawless smooth working unit would be enough. That's why ppl pay more for a MacOS than for Windows... (just an example, no discussion pls!)

  2. I have it installed and tested: When I pull out the key the Avic stays on for 5-7 seconds no matter which audio scource is running.

    Jörg

Great. Then i'm willing to pay the money for a try...if i can find the necessary space in my dash...

Thx for the hint, it seems to be an easy solution. :D

  3. http://www.medienelektronik.de/Artikel/615/1203/Entstoerung-MUNDORF_HeadCap_SC68_Speichercap_mit_ISO_Anschluss_und_Schutzelektronik.htm

Should work as plug and play for most cars in Europe with ISO style harness, for the Pioneer you just need one additional Diode in the yellow cable and you are fine. Buffers 5-6 secs, so long enough for cranking.

How u got the value of 5 seconds of buffering? Did you test it?

If i take that capacitor (0,068 F) with an AVIC of 2A and 14,4 V in a car and use

    C = I * t / V

solved to t, then the capacitor buffers just 0,5 seconds... :o

  4. Then i will buy today a F700BT from EU, then i got TMC too, and i can watch videos from SD crad.

IMHO that's the better solution. I have a EU F900BT but used the DVD player just once. Having a working radio and TMC is much more worth.

  5. But what about the 16gb cards? on the instructions book says it's maximum capacity supported is 8gb, but I think I read in someone's sig, it had a 16gb card...

It can work but Pioneer guarantees it only up to 8 GB.

    And DTS5.1? Lacking hardware also?

The Specification of the AVIC says it can play DVD-Video. Required sound format is PCM and Dolby Digital according to the DVD spec. Means support of DTS 5.1 would be optional...

I never tried to play DTS 5.1 so i don't know... and that's why i skipped that question. :)

However the AVIC repair manual says for the DVD drive:

    Number of channels: 2(stereo)

If indeed there's always a downmix to "2.0" then any question about using DTS 5.1 is obsolete ....

  6. I had already installed the unit making it impractical to connect my meter in between the radio and the car hookups so I removed the battery cable and installed it there. To my surprise, my car was drawing 2.8 amps while not running but with the doors open. Most likely a result of internal lights and other systems which activate to keep the car from being stolen. One advantage of this method is the ability to capture all electricity consumed by the radio when the system is running regardless of power routing.

I'm wondering how you could measure the AVIC alone if it's already in dash. It doesn't have a switch for on/off and will start if you switch your car to ACC. But then the whole car wakes up and a lot more of power will be consumed beside the AVIC...

The repair manual says the maximum power consumption is up to 10.0 A. Backup power is 6.5 mA

Another point, calculation of 1/100 of Watt if you just measure in 1/10 Ampere makes less sense.

It's safe to say the F90BT uses between 1 and 2 Amps regardless of what state it's in.

I don't agree. I assume you played the music on a reduced level? The paper says for maximum continuous power output 4 x 22.5 Watt (5% THD, at 4 Ohms), resulting in 90 Watt = 6.2 Ampere. So the AVIC can take quite more than your given 2 A in normal conditions...

In my case i can't play much more than 2 hours of music before the AVIC shut down cause the battery goes empty - with a 75 Ah battery...

  7. I think it lacks some features, as the voice control for ipod music

Voice Control (VC) is not available in european models.

(btw, does this work only with ipod or with music from sd card too?), or dialing numbers

VC would work for iPod and dialing. No support for SD card.

...Is this because it's an european model? I'm wondering if I could install these things somehow, by copying the software from the american version, but keeping the maps and all the stuff that's present in the european version.

VC can't be added to european model - missing hardware.

a few more things: what about 16gb sd cards? do they usually work well? and leetlaucher, what bugs are currently known (sorry to be asking here, but the topic is 50pages and probably would be reading some outdated info), and what kind of apps does it support? Is there any other software like the LL?

Read the hack section. Don't be lazy, people gets tired of answering the same questions again and again. Please read first and put remaing questions in the specific topic. Thanks in advance too.

  8. That helps a lot! I now have got it to show the Pioneer boot screen but after a few seconds, some random russian message(I'm not 100% sure what language it is) appears and then the whole program quits. Any ideas on how to get past this?

Then the application is missing something. In my case it said it in english and so piece by piece i could add what was missing... i think u should try to interpret the "russian" or find a way to change the language... Can u make a screen copy with the message? Maybe one person here can read it. :)

  9. 1) There is a Cockpit button on the menu. But nothing happend when I click it. What is it?

No idea, i hope Boris can clarify it. :-)

    2) Is it possible to have a shortcut to delete route or stop navigation on the map screen?

It's one click away. If you tap on the turn signal pic then u come to another screen and in the lower corners you find the mute and cancel route buttons.

Stanislavovich didn't want to have these buttons on the map screen itself.

    3) On the original pioneer skin, when you tap somewhere on the 3d map it is possible to change the elevation and view angle. Is it possible on this one too?

I'm happy that it is no longer there... 8)

  10. ... However, the speed limit on the highway seems to be messed up now. With the 3.0 maps, it displayed correctly with 100KM, but now it shows 161KM. This is 401WB. It also showed 146 instead of 90 on the DVP. Is there anyway to fix this?

    Looks like is mess up miles/h with km/h (100 m/h = 160 km/h, 90 m/h = 146 km/h). Sorry, i have no idea how to fix that...

  11. The sd cards are sent in a cd case and on the inside is a paper where you receive a media number. there is also space for a device number which you get when you insert the second sd card (you need to write this one down). After you get those two numbers you go to http://www.pioneernavigationupdate.com and put those two numbers in. The website then gives you a password that you are prompted for before you start updating with the second sd card. Here are some pictures.

Did i got it right? I start the update, get a device number, run to my computer, get a password, run back to the car and continue update :?:

  12. IThis new skin looks very intersting but does not appear to have audible speedcam warnings. My current warnimngs are based on GTiMatt's script, has any one upgraded this new mod to include such audible warnings?

What means "audible speedcam warnings" ? :?

This mod can give you acoustic warnings for speedcam in different modes:

    - Camera settings:

Any camera type can be turned off separately (no yellow border). There will be neither visual nor sound warning when approaching a camera.

    Custom Audio Warnings:

For every camera type you can select audio behaviour

    * Off: No audio notice.

    * Alarm: If not going faster than camera speed, there will be no audio alarm. If speed is within acceptable range: In 1000, 450 and 250 meters there will be one warning sound for attention. If going faster than limit + overspeed: In 1000 meters there will be a single alarm, then, starting with Alarm distance there will be constant alarm sound, increasing in frequency as you approach the camera. In 150 meters there will be last attempt to bring you to your senses. After that, warnings are useless anyway.

    * Warning: If not going over camera speed: no sound. If speeding (no overspeed applied): From specified alarm distance until the camera there will be constant audio warning of the dangerous zone.

    * Reminder: In 800 meters there will be a single reminder, independent of speed.

Usage samples: Alarm – Speed Camera, Warning – speed bump, Reminder – POI.

    * Verification beep - Always do a single beep 150 meters before camera. Used for testing camera locations.

    ------

    * Distance cameras (average speed?) not checked

    * No voice warnings.

The whole description from Boris is on page 8.

  13. My SE W960i can handle the contats by "last name, first name" or "first name last name". Transferred to the avic it's always "last name, first name" and that is the opposite i was using... i had to reorder all my contacts. I agree to Boby that this application could be much better. And it's not only the sorting of names, it's also the contact pictures (ok, that's just "nice to have") and the missing function in a navigation system (!) to set contacts adress as a route destination. :(

  14. @Elk:

You should try to play your music from SD and/or USB too in your environment. I wouldn't trust other ppl cause their hardware and ears are different. Rip your CD with EAC as a 320 kbps mp3 or FLAC (dunno if AVIC can play FLAC) and test it in your car.

I use the pre amp connectors too with Bose amps and Infinity speakers and usually play from SD card. I'm also not thrilled with the result. :?

  15. And is there any noteable difference between Igo 8.0 and 8.3? So the APL2 folder from avic-weo contains igo 8.3

I didn't install the iGO 8.3 yet. I'm quite happy with 8.0 plus Yuri's mod and the new maps. So my knowledge is limited. But i read the biggest difference in 8.3 is the long awaited 2D mode with direction up instead of north.

  16. Back when I first installed my F90BT, I tried to go the capacitor/diode/relay route using this diagram put together like this, but unfortunately the caps weren't big enough and the voltage still drops below the AVIC's threshold.

The capacitor is too small. In the picture i see a capacitor of 470 uF, that gives you a delay of 0.1 second before voltage drop. In the diagramm it showd 10.000 uF, this should hold around 2.5 seconds (assuming 12V and 50 mA for the relay).

But i don't know if the install help you, that depends on your car. If your car switch off the power for AVIC while cranking then this circuit might help to get power from another "all time hot" source. But if the voltage in your car drop below 10.x Volt cause the starter sucks too much energy then the circuit is useless.

  17. The APL2 folder from avic-weo has 2008.4 maps? That's a damn shame. Shouldn't you be able to just copy the new 2009.2 maps (8.0 format) to the content/maps folder?

This is something to sacrifice. Get iGO 8.3 and old 2008 maps or stay with iGO 8.0 and use the newest 2009 maps.

A new "modified" Ezrider for version 3.0 will solve that problem but it's not available yet.

  18. BTW:

    - Pioneer Italy officially claimed it will be available at the end of August...

    - Pioneer France said almost the same...

    - Pioneer Austria said before the autumn...

Pioneer Germany said "estimated in summer 2009"

I don't think you'll get the update before your holidays. Even the US guys just preordered their SD cards, nobody received it so far. And if you add the usual delay to europe... :?
