Welcome.
Congrats on buying a new and somewhat expensive Pioneer GPS system. You will lose all live traffic capability on 1 Jan 2012 when MSN Direct ends its service.

You did use the official Pioneer installation guide(s) for the wiring, yes??
You know how to solder properly (e.g., tin wires first, correct flux/solder combination, etc)?
-
It's because you parked outside a bank. The car and the Pioneer units both assumed you have money and want to make you buy more stuff to fix this.
hahahaha
But seriously, sounds like an intermittent short or some sort of fuse problem? Without knowing EXACTLY how you wired things up, it might be hard for folks on here to help. Can you find a local pro installer with Pioneer experience?
-
Sounds to me like the exact same thing that often happens with iPods and personal headphones...specifically, the 1/8" stereo jack on the headphones and/or the hole for it on the iPod's side gets worn down...making one lose the L or the R channel intermittently.
The effect can sometimes vary with temperature, as the different metals expand and contract, affecting the "goodness-of-fit"...
Sometimes, debris can also get in the hole on the iPod, preventing one from plugging in the cable all the way.
You can....
1. Check that you've got that jack plugged in tightly...possibly rotating it around a little to get the best connection.
2. Try a different cable (make sure it's Pioneer OEM and not one of those crappy fake eBay cables everyone is complaining about on here.
3. Check the receptacle for the 1/8" jack on the iPod to make sure it's clear of debris or corrosion. Clean with hard pencil eraser or other "approved" anti-corrosion material for electrical contacts. Try again.
4. Try a different iPod to see if it's the iPod's socket.

Really? Cause I looked. wire harness, power harness (can't search RCA), 1064 etc..
Basically the power harness is the same (except blue wire becomes blue/white moving from D3 to Z/X), but the RCA harnesses are different...different connectors, different pinouts.
I upgraded my buddy's D3 to an X920BT for him. We used the same black (power) harness from his D3, which also includes the basic sound out stuff...and sent the new one from the X920 off to the guy who bought the D3 on eBay.
The pinouts/purpose of all wires are shown in the installation manuals for both sets of products (both documents easily available on pioneerelectronics.com)

Good point...unless one's car is a Hybrid or electric, one is DEFINITELY an earth-killer. So having Eco-Route on a gas-powered car is like rating a murderer as "doing better" because he's killed fewer people today.
-
Another example of Pioneer getting the simple shit wrong because they spend too much time worrying about complex shit.
For example, my buddy says he'd GLADLY get rid of the questionable "Music Sphere" (e.g., probably 10,000 lines of code that Pioneer spent god knows how much time on) on his X920BT if it would properly scroll full XM and Sirius music info (e.g., 4 lines of code and five minutes work by a competent programmer).
Besides, the Genius feature in iTunes creates playlists much like MusicSphere, but in a superior way.
I just don't GET Pioneer sometimes...
-
It seems to have resolved itself for the timing being without me changing anything. This hasn't happened at all since beginning of November so I'm not monitoring it for now.
I find that difficult to believe.
-
Also, pretty ridiculous on the part of Pioneer. $80 hand-held XM radios have been able to scroll entire song titles for years....but a $1000 in-dash unit can't?? Really, Pioneer?? Plus, they've had since the D3 to fix this problem. lol
-
Er...what's the large metal rod in the box to the right of the unit in the photo??? Looks like that just slid back and forth across the screen.
-
Anybody got a source within Pioneer they can feed these to as suggestions for the next (?) X-Series firmware update??
These are kind of annoyances, IMHO...
1. Scroll vs. Selection Beep:
Make sure there is never any selection beep when one is merely SCROLLING on the screen (e.g., through playlists). Every person I know who's used my buddy's X920BT gets totally confused by the beep that often seems to occur when trying to start a scroll operation, thinking they made a selection instead of just scrolling (or vice versa). It's intermittent, but truly annoying.
It's already a little tricky to know how quickly to "swipe" to start a scroll without inadvertantly selecting something -- which should ALSO be fixed. Making sure that the beep only triggers when one has pressed long enough in one location for a SELECTION 100% of the time would help "train" users how to scroll vs. select on this unit.
2. Muting Options:
Allow users to change the AMOUNT of mute that occurs when directions are being read on a source-by-source basis.
My buddy wants total muting when a phone call is active but almost no muting when playing XM. Right now, the units force the mute amount to be the same on all sources. Yeah, they at least let you select either Guide/Phone/VR/Phone vs. just Phone/VR muting (or whatever), but one is forced to apply either total, 10db, or 20db as the SAME mute level used for all sources.
3. Arrival Data Button:
Restore Waypoint AND Final destination arrival data to the little timer/distance/arrival cycling button in the upper right of the map screen. Right now, one has to go into the route overview to see final destination arrival data for a multi-point trip. On the D3, there was a little button on the map screen in the lower left corner that used to let the user choose between waypoint and final arrival data. This is a real annoyance...one can be on the phone and be asked when one is arriving at the final destination.
Right now, all one can say is "well, I know I'll be at the gas station first in ten minutes...let me fiddle with my screen while trying to answer your question..." Geezuz.
4. Restore Button to get AV Sound Options to AV Source Screen:
Yes, one can get to the EQ directly from the AV source screen. However, unless we're missing something, one now has to go to the Home screen, into Settings, and then into one of the AV Sound options to change the settings to change the staging, LPF, Loudness, etc.
UPDATE: 5. BONUS Suggestion -- Make Bluetooth Connection Icon Non-Microscopic:
Why, in the name of all that's holy, did Pioneer make the Bluetooth connection icon on the map view INSANELY small? It's like...ten pixels across, which is hard to see in a brief glance while driving to insure one's phone is connected. What the hell? Seriously...what the hell? It should be at least half the size the iPod album cover shown on the map screen in the lower right.

The NavTraffic tuners require a separate data port for that service that does not exist on those units so an update wont do anything for those units. Forget about a solution for any of the F and previous X series units but we may see a new tuner device to replace the separate MSN tuner for the Z110/120/X920 units. But remember, we're talking about Pioneer here, if you hold your breath you may die.
I was thinking they could make an adapter that connects the regular XM radio port and the dedicated physical port for NavTraffic data from the older tuner and combine the data on the same line somehow.
The newer units definitely have the processing power to "decomm" the data (as we say in the engineering biz...). The problems (obviously) would be re-programming the AVIC. Assuming BOTH types of data come in to the unit as digital, however, that should be possible.
The problem gets tougher if the XM radio comes in from the tuner as ANALOG, but even then I can think of some ways to do this off-board (i.e., pre-AVIC head unit). Depends how much time Pioneer wants to spend.
A new traffic tuner of some kind would be easier for them...and I wish they'd do it for the sake of all the AVIC users out there who rely on the MSN functionality presently.
-
Whatever happened to the original problem in this thread??? Solved?
-
Has anyone have any sucess getting Netflix or any video from an iPhone to work? I have the proper cord and done everything I can think of without success.
You're an EMS???
I hope you never have to patch up anyone who had a traffic accident because they were watching Netflix on their Pioneer head units while driving!

As it's stated in the manual, 4th Gen iPods are not supported.
You are *likely* correct because you've been around these units a while...and because this guy was obviously having problems with that one model.
However, I disagree with you if you believe it's 100% clear in the manual.
I'm reading it right now...it has a line for "iPod Classic: Ver 2.0.2" without being 100% clear which generations of classic they mean on that line....so it doesn't make clear on that line if the 4th gen is specifically excluded. And the other line listing the "iPod fifth generation" as a stand-alone also doesn't mean the 4th gen is specifically excluded.
Also, it says others than those listed "may" not work correctly. That doesn't mean they definitely wouldn't, it means they MAY not....so this guy was cool asking about it. This was NOT a clear-cut case of "read the manual" in my humble opinion....we've got plenty of such cases on this forum, but this wasn't one.
-
I definitely mean 60GB iPod Classic, 4th generation.
...is it running software v2.0.2?
-
I just hold down the "forward track" button on the head unit (or the "next tract" button on my steering wheel) and the ipod track fast forwards. Obviously, if you press it once, it skips to the next track. Again, holding the button down fast forwards until you release.
Ah...

The radio display on the car's dash may have to be turned off by the dealer or someone with a handheld computer programming tool compatible with your car. Basically, you have to tell your car it no longer has the factory radio installed.
In some cars, like my Audi, it's possible for the owner to easily tell the car to stop displaying radio info on the instrument display. Don't know about the Avalon.
The rest of it sounds like a TON of really sloppy and silly installation and wiring errors to me. Without getting into the hyper-details of your car's wiring diagram, fuse structure, and what was done in your install, it's going to be hard for folks to definitely figure out what the installer did wrong.

Pioneer's past behavior should lead you to expect that they will NOT replace the GOOG411 or MSN Direct, but rather will expect you to buy an entirely new unit on the first of Feb 2011.
The honorable thing to do would be for them to offer a new accessory to legions of F- and X-Series users who need those services for live traffic, etc. For example, why not an FM-TDS traffic accessory? Or a software update that reads the XM NavTraffic from the older Pioneer XM tuner when used with F- or X-series units (right now, the XM NavTraffic data from the older tuner is ignored by the newer units).
So...will Pioneer do the honorable thing? LOL
-
thanx for reply. It's just a convenience thing, no big deal. Can you tell me about the map update and how I find what I have now, and how I update?
The firmware update instruction document on Pioneer's site explains how to find what you are running now...something like long-pressing the little tools icon in the upper left of the service information display. It brings up a hidden screen with firmware revision and map data version info.
-
Also, find the guy and threaten to kick the crap out of him. What was his eBay username?
-
Actually...follow up question...
The X920BT looks like it will only cycle through distance, time, and arrival for the NEXT WAYPOINT, and not any later waypoints or final destination...at least the old D3 (god, I hated that f'ing thing) used to switch between WAYPOINT and FINAL destination data.
It appears the only way to see the arrival info for the FINAL destination in a multi-point trip is to bring up the little on-screen mini-menu and tap on the route overview button....this seems to show the checkered-flag, final destination data across the bottom of the screen.
Am I missing something??

Some (but not all) of the new Pioneers reportedly DO use Parrot, and the connectivity is WAY better than the older units, like the AVIC D3 (god, I hated that POS).
The new Sony units look FANTASTIC (see my other post in these forums about that) and are competitive in price on eBay and Amazon. However, they may not have voice-recognition under as many circumstances as the Pioneers presently do. Sony doesn't even advertise that they have it...one has to look in the online manuals to see that they have SOME sport of VR capability, but it's odd....
Still, they are SWEET.

There's a sub-forum for "vehicle-specific wiring" just so you know...
But anyway, he was trying to explain in the earlier part of the thread that the Pioneer harness with the BLACK connector has the audio outputs, and that you don't have to use almost anything on the white RCA one unless you're trying to send audio to a bunch of aftermarket woofers, speakers, etc.
Also, you use it for the infamous "bypass" that everyone talks about in many threads on here.
Here's the wiring instructions for the unit that he was alluding to:
