  1. Pioneer has NOT been that punctual with updates. For example, the first map data update for the old D3 (god, I hated that thing) came out NINE months into the new year, and they used data that was even older than that. By the time they got the data, verified it, modified it for use with the D3, and released the update, it was worthless...18 month old data. They were not prepared to update new data from the providers. And that update cost about 50% more than competitor's map updates....something that persists with Pioneer.

  2. I think by "laggy" he's referring to scrolling through the AV sources, the songs, etc.

And yes, that is the case with these units. The reason is that scrolling is always tricky on a RESISTIVE touch screen (which these are). Because resistive touch screens require a bit of physical pressure, it can be tricky to get the right sensitivity to pressure (and the programming) to make scrolling work well. That's why CAPACITIVE screens (e.g., the iPhone) are so much better at quick, responsive things like scrolling.

Most devices that use resistive touch screens shy away from scrolling types of interfaces for this reason.

The reason one has to use a RESISTIVE touch screen in a car is because a) people often have gloves on while driving, and 2) changing temperatures and humidity in a car often make capacitive touchscreens a little buggy, and 3) resistive touchscreens stand up to rough use (e.g., in a car) better than glassy (or hard plastic) capacitive ones.

  3. All that stuff seems to work fine on the new X920BT I helped my buddy upgrade to. Not sure why you're having issues.

On my buddy's X920BT, we do notice the RDS info can take a minute or two to show up while it gets decoded from the analog FM data stream...but it eventually gets there.

The navigation seems fine on his unit...very similar to one of the better Tom Tom models...and WAY better than the crappy old AVIC D3 he and I both had...man, the D3 sucked hairy, rotting moose dick.

  4. hello.

I apologize first because I use a translator.

I'm sorry but my English is limited.

I have a AVIC F900BT. an update is needed urgently. have a version and map 2.009000 01.000600.

where I can download an updated map of europe and software.

    thanks for your help.

    According to the following site:

    http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/support/software/AVIC-F900BT/index.html#download_1

Step 1: You MUST download and install the software V2 update according to THESE instructions

Step 2: THEN you may download and install software V3 and map V2 according to THESE instructions.

Also, here is a person with a similar situation as yours...

  5. Hmmm...I agree the AV screen is a little less modern on the Sonys, but when driving, isn't that what some people would prefer (not saying it's better than the AVICs...just saying less clutter means less to take your attention off the road)?

By the way, I just read those Sony's have a feature almost EXACTLY like MusicSphere....Sony calls it SenseIt or something.

  6. If thses are like everything else Sony makes they're going to be orphaned and not supported in 3months when they release their next gen navis. It never fails with Sony stuff, theyre worse than Apple in this reguard.

    Hmm...dunno.

Holy cr-p! You're the FIRST member of these forums?!? I think I just heard trumpets sound...it's like a rare item showing up in a MMORPG.

  7. Did you reset the unit?

We disconnected it from the power harness twice in the course of making adjustments to the installation...he says he noticed the problem at least once before and after the second time. However, I don't believe he's done a hardware reset.

Good thought. I'll tell him to give it a shot.

I wonder if the unit would allow him to re-install the firmware update just to check the corrupt software load theory (which I think is unlikely...)?

  8. I dont think this issue is a common problem and likely related to a possible defective unit. Just have it exchanged while you can.

    Maybe...

...but it's hard to imagine what kind of defect would cause this. A corrupt software load would likely show other glitches as well, not just a delayed message stack pointer issue (which is what I think this is...I wonder what programming language they used?). And it can't be any sort of hardware defect that I can think of. Really odd...

I still wanna' see if anyone else chimes in with this issue. Even with my buddy's unit, we're not seeing this frequently...just enough to confirm it's not a one-time error or glitch. We shall see...

  9. UPDATE #3:

Holy crap...the Sonys appear to have voice-recognition dialing for phones. Take a look at page 41 of the manual at THIS link...

It works if one's cell phone supports Voice Tags, which many do.

From what I've read, there are two kinds of voice tagging. One version is when you can record YOURSELF saying your contacts' name and store the snippets as part of the contacts themselves on one's phone. The other kind is when the phone's OS just creates a tag based on the words in the contact name.

A Sony online chat rep just seemed to confirm my interpretation.

I think I just found my next in-dash GPS system! I'm puzzled why they wouldn't highlight this on their webpage. They don't even MENTION voice dialing as a capability....weird.

  10. Man...looking at the Sony's again...

Just realized they come with FREE map updates for the first year, and are something like $80 after that (compared to Pioneer's $120).

AND...they have traffic information based on ACTUAL TRAFFIC SPEEDS collected from over 6 million drivers rather than just relying on posted speed limits and traffic reports. They call it "IQ Routes." Sounds a lot like the traffic speed scheme used for the ones made by Dash out in CA. I've been screaming about in-dash units not having ACTUAL traffic speed data for years...they're finally catching up with the possibilities here. This traffic and re-routing technique will run circles around Pioneers...which lose all traffic capability when MSN Direct goes silent in Jan 2011.

Man...if the Sony's just had VR, they'd be the HANDS-DOWN winner here. Nothing else from Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, Eclipse, JVC, Dash, etc. would TOUCH these things if htey also had VR.

UPDATE: Just realized that the live, reality-based speed and traffic IQ Routes solution is the TomTom traffic solution...the Sonys use TomTom as the navigation software (just like Kenwood uses Garmin). The fact that the Sony traffic info is based on ACTUAL speeds being reported anonymously by all TomTom/Sony users is REALLY interesting. Should be MUCH better than XM NavTraffic, MSN Traffic, and even FM-TDS. I'm impressed...

UPDATE #2: The higher-end Sony is available on eBay for as little as $900! And the smaller screen one is available for as little as $750 or so. Wow...this is getting pretty compelling...

  11. Also keep in mind they always look better on paper then in reality. Features often don't work as described. We know that all too well with the likes of Pioneer and Kenwood so Sony is likely no different.

Yeah...we'll see if they live up to the promise and potential here.

By the way, I know you've seen me talk in here about how Kenwood decided to use Garmin as their navigation solution. Well...you'll notice Sony went with TomTom for these units.

On both cases, my friends and family can get in my car and immediately know how to use these units from the passenger seat (or if they borrow my car). The problem with the Pioneer/iGo/whatever navigation software is that it's so unlike any of the mass-market navigation software that nobody who sat in my car could ever use the D3...and my buddy is noticing the same thing with his X920BT. Everyone is like "how do you use this darn thing?"

By the way, the higher-end Sony is available on eBay for as little as $900! And the smaller screen one is available for $750. Wow...this is getting pretty compelling...

  12. These navis do look nice but there is one deal breaker for me, no VR.

  13. Need instructions on how to bypass dvd and navi while driven??

    *sigh*

Why not bypass the 17 different threads already answering this question on these forums and go right to the step where you crash into a tree because you were illegally watching a DVD while driving?

  14. All:

My buddy's X920BT seems to suffer from a delayed message and notification issue that's not a huge deal, but is more of an annoyance. It seems to mostly happen with Bluetooth and phone-related screen messages on the AVIC.

For example, if he has a problem connecting his phone using Bluetooth for some reason, he sometimes gives up and goes inside. The next time he comes out to the car and reconnects -- whether it be an hour later or the next morning --, the "successful" connection message is first preceded by an error message ON THE AVIC from the DAY BEFORE that the AVIC never managed to spit out. He ignores the message on the AVIC and continues to connect, and it works fine.

It's a delayed message bug on Pioneer's part (or Parrot, if the X920 uses Parrot?), but since Pioneer's computer programmers suck hairy, decayed moose balls, AVIC users are stuck with shit like this.

Another example is with the "My Mix" (formerly "Memo") function on the XM tuners. A song memo might be properly stored, but the AVIC might not display the message indicating success until the NEXT TIME my buddy records a Memo...the AVIC will show the LAST message in its message stack from a song he "memo-fied" YESTERDAY.

This problem may be playing a role in many user's interpretation of what's going on when they try to connect Bluetooth phones to these units. In another thread, I'm trying to help a guy get his Blackberry connected to an X920, and I'm starting to suspect that left-over Bluetooth pairing-related messages on the part of the AVIC are playing a role in confusing things.

Anybody else having issues with the AVIC X920BT displaying messages when they connect a Bluetooth device that actually are left over from the PREVIOUS pairing session? Or OTHER examples of AVIC on-screen messages that are delayed?

    - JD

  15. So, I master reset the phone and radio, and now it says BT audio device failed to connect, and repeatedly flashes on my phone until I turn off the radio. It let me pair up with the NAVI, but it doesn't work at all. I'm totally at a loss now.......

I think we'll be able to get this to work.

First, it sounds like your Bold 9700 MAY still have either the "Pioneer Navi" device -- or an additional device -- as a paired/trusted device and is trying to connect by default as soon as you turn Bluetooth on.

Or perhaps (less likely), when you turn Bluetooth ON, the phone is trying to get out the last error messages that were caught in its message "stack" and it's reporting on what happened LAST TIME because it never got a chance to.

Aside: Note that the Pioneer AVICs, including the X920BT, sometimes suffer from a delayed message problem. For example, if my buddy has a problem connecting his phone using Bluetooth for some reason, he sometimes gives up and goes inside. The next time he comes out to the car and reconnects, the "successful" connection message is first preceded by an error message ON THE AVIC from the DAY BEFORE that the AVIC never managed to spit out. He ignores the message on the AVIC and continues to connect, and it works fine. It's a delayed message bug on Pioneer's part, but since their programmers suck balls, AVIC users are stuck with shit like this. This problem may be playing a role in your interpretation of what's going on.

    Anyway, back to helping you...

You have GOT to find a way to be 100% sure that you've properly deleted ALL stored/trusted Bluetooth devices from your phone before getting within a mile of the AVIC and starting all over again.

For now, you should also try turning OFF any options on your phone that tell it to auto-connect when Bluetooth is first turned on. Let's solve the basic connection issue and worry about auto-connecting later, ok?

    Specific guidance:

    1. Are you doing THIS first?

    2. Other people with your phone seem to have this issue connecting to various car Bluetooth units. HERE is a post you should read. HERE is another one. Per my advice above, try following these posts to understand how to turn OFF auto-connect or "trusted" device on your Bold while we debug this.

    3. You understand the correct PIN code for the AVIC, yes? I think the default is 1111 on the X-series?

A little more detailed step-by-step description of EXACTLY what you're doing each time...line by line, key-press-by-keypress, might help us. Your description of everything you did wasn't super detailed....

    I mean something like...

"1. Turn phone ON...AVIC is OFF"

"2. On Blackberry, went to Menu->Settings->Etc..."

"3. Blackberry screen says "Bluetooth turning ON"...

    Etc.

  16. I just picked up a used avic-d3 but the RCA harness is missing the rear and sub outs. It seems like a lot of avic gear uses the same connector jacks on the head unit for the RCA breakout or the power harnesses. However, it seems Pioneer has unique part numbers for the D3 vs previous units. The question I have is are any other harnesses compatible with the D3? I'm good at repair work so I have no problem building the correct harness if need be, I would just need the pinouts.

The D3 cables are around $50 each, and while that may be cheap when compared to the MSRP of the head unit, that is almost a third the cost of a used unit. I see z series cables much cheaper on eBay.

    Karl

D3 vs. later unit harness questions have been asked and answered in a million threads in this forum.

  17. I am in no way looking to hack, crack or steal the latest update CNSD-200FM.I would really like to get it but $120 is kind of steep for me at this time. I waited this long hoping the price might come down a little with age. Does anyone know of a reputable company thet might sell this cheaper? crutchfield does for about $.01 less that pioneer. It's like $119.99. big deal. Not enough discount to draw me away from pioneer itself. I would rather just buy it from pioneer that way if I had a problem I can deal with them directly and they have no excuse like "sorry can't help you, call the people you bought it from"

In all fairness to this guy, Pioneer DOES charge significantly more for these map updates than Garmin, Tom Tom, Magellan, etc. I posted about that in one or two other thread in these forums recently.

    Pioneer: $120

Garmin: $80 (or $100 for lifetime in some cases for some units)

(UPDATE) Sony: FREE map updates for first year! See HERE.
