  1. LOL...WTF is that?

Looks like it might be a generic knock-off of one of the slightly older Kenwood models?

The AV source display looks familiar...just can't remember where I've seen it.

If you leaf through the entire Crutchfield paper catalog, you may find the AV selection screen that resembles this one.

    Options are...

    Kenwood?

    JVC?

    Eclipse?

    Jensen?

    Rosen?

    Pioneer?

I'm still leaning towards this being a cheap Chinese knock off of an older Kenwood.

  2. Anyone had any luck/problems with the Avic series (I have an N4) and an Android phone? My HTC Hero works fine with Bluetooth audio. Actually it works great. But when I tried to use the phone part, it will see the Hero, it will connect and then say unrecognized device. I can only assume it is the newer phone against an older Bluetooth device (the BTB200). Still it is strange that it works fine in Audio and not Phone.

    Norman

The Pioneer CD-BTB200 Bluetooth unit is NOT compatible with the Bluetooth phone profiles on the HTC Hero (e.g., Hands-Free Profile, Headset Profile (HFP, HSP)). That's because Pioneer made some errors programming the Bluetooth in the unit and/or used an older Bluetooth standard....and it's NOT fixable.

You cannot get it to work...in fact, the AVIC D3 and BTB200 combination will usually refuse to connect with the HTC Hero for telephony at all, saying "Invalid Device" name.

However, the CD-BTB200 works fine with the Bluetooth audio streaming profiles on the HTC Hero (e.g., A2DP, AVRCP) as you've already discovered.

FYI, the Hero works fine with the Bluetooth built in to some later Pioneer units, such as the AVIC-X920BT. I personally upgraded a buddy's unit and he has the Hero. We tried everything, and it all works fine...including the voice command dialing.

If you cannot afford to ditch the crappy old D3 and CD-BTB200, you can try to find a different (typically older) phone that works well with it, such as the Motorola RAZR V3 series or the LG Rumor 2 (the latter works quite well with the D3/BTB200 combination). There are a bunch of forums on this board dedicated to maintaing Bluetooth compatibility lists for the old D3 and BTB200 combination.

Aside: I always wondered if there's a device out there that will convert a Bluetooth telephone profile (e.g., HFP) into an audio stream and back....would let people use many more phones with the older Pioneer stuff, despite Pioneer's errors programming the Bluetooth stack and their use of an older Bluetooth standards set.

  3. Just to let folks know that the HTC EVO BY SPRINT DOES WORK WITH THE AVIC -D 3

Kind of surprising, actually. Some other HTC smartphones do NOT work correctly with the old D3/CD-BTB200 combo...and since the CD-BTB200 firmware/software can NEVER be updated, people who own the CD-BTB200 will have to live with the older Bluetooth standards compliance (or lack thereof, since Pioneer made some Bluetooth stack errors when they programmed it).

Are you indeed using the CD-BTB200 Bluetooth add-on for the D3?

Also, which functions work? Contacts transfer? Auto-connect? Audio streaming?

Perhaps you should gather some more details about which functions work and which don't, and then add this to the many existing threads dedicated to Bluetooth and AVIC compatibility? Somebody has been maintaining a master spreadsheet of these, and you could be of some help to them with a more thorough post.

  4. Hello All!

Ok short story, never ever was into sounds but my oem cd player broke and out of warrenty on my mustang gt.

I Run down to local auto sound shop and purchase a dvd and navi system to replace, oem replacement $400 - aftermarket $550 so I chose aftermarket.

I have no idea what it is! Nothing on box or instructions. NO model number or nothing. Just says DVD CAR AUDIO Navigation System"

The shop is popular and been around awhile, works great so far and I assume it's some bootleg direct manufacture kit.

All I know is it sits in dash flat touch screen with one slot for cd/dvd and you can flip the screen with your finger 3d

Sound common? Any ideas or help is appreciated.

Dude...put up a photo or something. Otherwise, this post is purely ridiculous.

  5. Hey Everybody:

    I just successfully upgraded a buddy's D3 to the X920BT.

I wanted to let you know you all missed ANOTHER important difference in the harnesses.

Specifically, there is a blue/white wire on the D3's white RCA harness for "system control terminal of the power amp." There is ALSO a different pure blue wire on the D3's black power harness for "antenna relay control." They are different, and the D3's install instructions specifically say to keep them separate.

However, on the X920BT, both of these appear to have been combined on a single blue/white wire on the X920BT black power harness.

In our install, we had to move what we had connected to the D3's blue/white RCA wire over to the black harness. In our case, the rear speakers wouldn't work until we hooked it up because of the details of how his D3 install was done. So now, we've got his Audi's antenna control relay AND a power/amp or real speaker line BOTH connected to the same (blue) wire leftover from the old D3 power harness. If we had used the new X920BT harness, then we'd have them BOTH on the new blue/white wire.

    - JD

  6.

    UPDATE:

I successfully upgraded the AVIC-D3 in a 2008 Audi A4 to the AVIC-X920BT. To answer your question, the Fakra twin-diversity radio antenna adapter we got worked....

....However, we had to carefully remove ONE of the RF connectors from within its green rectangular housing (see photo at either link below). That's because the off-white connector on the Audi's antenna wire had the AM & FM connections RIGHT next to each other, like two circles touching. It couldn't accommodate both the green boxes on the adapter's side. Here's basically the one we used

  7. Everybody:

I notice a LOT of heartbreak and pain surrounding all this cutting-out-and-moving of mute wires for the AVIC harness bypassing.

Has anybody simply tried buying some pre-crimped, 22-gauge electronics wire with female sockets already placed on the ends and just inserted them into the connector(s) for the various X- and F-series mute-wire moving you're all doing???

Why all this cutting-and-moving of mute wires? I think they sell pre-crimped wires with exactly the types of pins/sockets you're looking for that can be inserted into this type and size of harness...for like $10 for 50 wires.

    For example: Would these work...

    http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/2024

UPDATE: I just received a package of these pre-crimped wires, and they look like the right wires to buy to simply plug into the vacant harness spots to do the bypasses for AVIC X-series, rather than cutting up the harnesses with razor blades like everyone is doing.

It's important to note that you have to take care to use the correct side of the connector.

The connectors themselves are slightly smaller in width than the Pioneer ones, but I think they would click into the harnesses correctly. Haven't tried it yet.

Also, be aware that the LONGER lengths are the ones that come in 22 gauge wire, which is what Pioneer appears to have used in the harnesses. The shorter ones are only 26 gague (thin).

Anyone have any idea if there are other sources of pre-crimped terminal wires like this? Perhaps with slightly larger connectors?

    Regards,

    JD

  8. OK, anyone here have pointers regarding the Pioneer AVIC F7010BT (same as F700BT) antenna connections in a 2008 Audi A4 (B7)?

I got the adapter from ENFIG.com, but... there are TWO antenna connectors in the Audi. The AVIC only has one so the question is; how to connect the other from the Audi?

Notice that with the AVIC the AM reception is pretty much non existent (only able to get one station in DFW) whereas with the OEM radio got boatloads of AM stations..

    Suggestions? Hints?

Wow. This question has come up a LOT in the past on these forums...not sure what happened to all the old posts, but you need something like one of these:

  9. Ok I need to know if anybody ever installed a pioneer 920bt in a Audi a4? Or know of a after market navigation part that is compatible with the factory radio thanks

I'm trying to help a buddy upgrade the D3 in his 2008 Audi to an X920BT. I'll let you know when it's done. Might get around to it next week...

EDIT: Ok, I successfully upgraded the AVIC-D3 in a 2008 Audi A4 to the AVIC-X920BT. To answer your question, the Fakra twin-diversity radio antenna adapter we got worked....

  10. Ok so I'm transferring universities and going home for the summer so I'm taking all my stuff with me and driving across the country..from Arizona to New Jersey to be exact. I decided there is no way I'm making that trip without my system, DVD video, or GPS. I'm hauling a trailer this time so there's no way I can speed through the country at 120mph like the first time I did the trip in my old 01 Celica ( :( RIP!) Looking for a smooth relaxing ride.. maybe watch a couple movies, and enjoy some tunes 8) . I bought the D3 last semester to upgrade from the D1 that had been in the Celica.. and like alot of rookie Avic buyers.. I bought it off Ebay looking for a great price and ended up with a working D3 but NO Wires, Nav dics, etc. I did some shopping and I think I got all but a few things.. please let me know if I'm missing anything and if you have any tips..

    What I have:

    - Double Din Installation Kit - (Its an ABS plastic kit.. Do I need to buy the kit on the Pioneer Website too?)

    - Power Supply Wire

    - 70-1721 (Wiring Harness)

    - 40-VW53 (Audi Antenna Cable)

    - 70-1787 (Bose Amp Integration Wires)

    - Rockford Fosgate System with subs, amp, capacitor, and wires

What I already have lined up to get:

    - GPS cable

    - Ipod Cable

    What I need:

    - BOTH NAVIGATION DISCS! this seems to be the one that's giving me problem. Ive popped up several disc codes including {CNDV-70M, CNDV-90MT, CPJ1184, and P-CPJ1182}... which ones will work? and which is the most recent updated disc that'll work with the D3.. I see some posts about burning the nav discs.. how do I do that?

    ByPass:

Ground the mute wire in in the hole above its original place.. and ground the parking brake wire.. anything else?

I'm looking to have DVD, GPS, and Ipod working smoothly.. I just need all parts necessary and I got to do the Bypass.. since I'm taking all the parts to Best Buy so they can hook up everything with my Rockford Fosgate subs..

    Summary:

    BYPASS.. how to?

Where can I get the Nav Discs?

    Am I missing anything?

    Any tips to avoid problems?

    I had a D3 in a 2008 Audi A4. Here's what I remember using:

    - AVIC D3 & its OEM GPS Antenna

    - CD-BTB200 Bluetooth & its OEM Microphone

    - Metra Double-Din kit for A4 (stripped out the center divider)

    - CAN45PIO harness adaptor

    - Soundgate CANPULSE4 to get the speed pulse off the CAN bus into the AVIC and do some steering wheel control inputs

    - Needed a Fakra antenna adaptor of some kind (Audi AM/FM antenna inputs often don't conform to factory and don't do the correct "Y" split for the Pioneer) the forums have a ton of posts about this in an Audi

    - Copies of the 2008, 2009, and 2010 D3 Nav software and disks are all over eBay for $15-$100. Most are pirate copies but they work fine.

    - Instructions for your install are all over this forum, so I'm sure you'll find what you need

    - Also, here's a link for somebody who did a similar install:

    http://www.audiforum.ca/general-d-i-y-do-yourself/1107-audi-d-i-y-a4-pioneer.html

  11. Thanx a million chaps - JohnnyDepp - It is the former - i.e. which Canpulse adaptor to get.

I'm in the U.K so will try to find european stockist for the Soundgate.

    Thanx again.

Hope it works out...not sure what other harnesses or wiring adaptors you would need other than the CANPIO45.

By the way, here's a post on a different forum about an AVIC D3 Audi install from a couple of years back...might have some useful info to add to what's already on this forum:

    http://www.audiforum.ca/general-d-i-y-do-yourself/1107-audi-d-i-y-a4-pioneer.html

Also, be aware the radio antenna can sometimes be tricky in the Audi (no seperate connector for AM/FM, etc.). There are one or two threads on this forum that tell you which antenna adapter to buy if you have problems getting the right physical setup to get both FM and AM.

There's another post about that here:

    http://avic411.com/index.php?/topic/22821-avic-antenna-connections-in-a-2008-audi-a4/page__gopid__219149#entry219149

  12. Do you have the MSN tuner? If so, what will you do when you lose traffic and live POI and searching in Jan 2011? Will you be pressing Pioneer for an FM-TDS accessory for all the F- and X-series units to replace MSN? Will you fork over another $1000 for the X999 or whatever they tell JasonH about at CES?

Just curious about your thoughts on that...

  13. I installed AVIC-X920BT in my car (Subaru Outback 2010) one week ago. Got the unit from Amozon.com during the sale ($486 with the $100 rebate I'm waiting for). Anyway, after I placed my order I had second thoughts following some complaints posted on the forum - navigation not as good as Garmin's, poor quality of Bluetooth, lack of connection with iPhone etc). So far I haven't experienced any problems with my unit (I'm willing to give up on VR however if I persist I get connected with my contacts). I like the navigation better than on my portable Garmin 255. Wish AVIC had a speed trap POIs option. The phone calls quality is excellent - verified with number of people talking to me on the phone. I had to set up the ECHO option to ON following the very first call. Therefore, I'm wondering if everyone is buying the unit from the authorized source - I've heard there are fake copies on the market.

Do you have the latest software update installed? 2.XXX or whatever?

  14. Does your installer mean he's having trouble finding the right CANPULSE adapter to install with the unit, or is he saying he can't find the right electronics bus in your car to plug into? Two different questions...

If he means the former, then tell him the Soundgate CANPULSE4 worked fine with an AVIC D3 in my 2008 Audi A4. According to one version of the 2008 Soundgate compatibility guide (attached for you), it should work for a 2006 Audi.

Below are some links to help...and I attached an old fit guide from Soundgate.

Better hurry...they are discontinuing the Soundgate product line (new company named "Kicker" says you can still buy existing stock at retailers, but is sorry they are no longer going to do the Soundgate stuff...).

    http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_11444_SoundGate+CANPULSE4+-Price+Good+Only+While+Supplies+Last-.html

    http://www.kicker.com/soundgate

You may also need the correct harness for your vehicle (e.g., something like the CAN45PIO for Pioneer radios).

The new company "Kicker" has a fit guide on their website, but I think it's totally fouled up. Wouldn't trust it at all...

If, on the other hand, your installer means that he can't find the right wires/bus/harness to plug into that's a different question...there are definitely folks on here who can help, though.

    Which does he mean?

    Soundgate Application Guide 0302.pdf

  15. LOL...just what I expected from the unapologetic fanboys on this site. Pioneer can do no wrong, according to you guys.

I notice you didn't have much of a defense for the MSN-only live data, live-POI, and traffic information issue that's going to render nearly the entire Pioneer F-, X-, and Z-series obsolete in a year....lol. To which Pioneer's answer to everyone has been "Oh well...at least your stuff will work until Jan 2011...nope, we don't plan any particular replacement capability for our existing units...good luck, customers!"

  16.

Friggin' Pioneer...sometimes, I REALLY hate those guys...
why, Every single brand i have ever used or sold has periodically changes their harnesses, not just a pioneer thing

Hmm...not to be rude, but just because a few other companies change their products enough to make a simple plug-and-play upgrade impossible doesn't make it right...in fact, it's plain dumb business...especially since Pioneer forces their customer base to buy entirely new units to fix the mistakes of their past ones. Any marketing person worth his pay will tell you that it's ALWAYS better to make it easy for customers to replace an old unit with a new one. So the old "but mom, my best FRIEND also jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge" defense really doesn't work.

So...other reasons I'm miffed at them? Well, since you ask...

    - Harness Changes: The harness change we just discussed...

    - Really Poor Past Bluetooth:

Pioneer techs admitted many times to many people on this forum that they made a number of errors programming the Bluetooth stack on the BTB200, which made all the older units totally nonfunctional with a TON of phones, and prevented phones that USED to have excellent voice-dialing capabilities (e.g., the 2004 Motorola RAZR) from working properly. Instead of bothering to fix it and adhere to the Bluetooth HFP and HSP protocols and standards by offering a replacement unit (e.g., a BTB201?) they just said "tough...we always said we can't guarantee your phone will work with this unit"....this despite HEAVILY advertising the hands-free and telephony capabilities of those older units.

Often, they told people "well...buy the new units with better Bluetooth"...thanks...instead of offering a Bluetooth accessory to fix their past mistakes, they use forced obsolescence, viewing existing customers as a forced-upgrade pool.

In contrast, Kenwood's units use Parrot bluetooth, which is far superior and whose programmers adhere to the relevant Bluetooth standards and properly programs their bluetooth profiles.

    - Soon-Obsolete Traffic and Live Data:

Everybody's Z-, F-, and X-series units that rely on MSN for traffic and other live data will all go obsolete, losing these functions in a year...Pioneer refuses to develop a replacement FM-TDS add-on as well as live internet add-on to replace the functionality everyone is going to use....once again, forcing customers to buy $1000+ units instead of a simple $100 replacement add-on. Tom Toms and Garmins costing $200 use FM-TDS, and Pioneer could EASILY help out tens of thousands of their existing customers by offering add-ons to replace what they'll all be losing in Jan 2012.

And of course, they made the new X-series units incompatible with the XM NavTraffic feature on the older XM receiver...probably because they made some sort of deal with Microsoft and MSN. Thanks, Pioneer....for making new units incompatible with the NavTraffic features of your older XM units. Idiots.

    - Navigation: Pioneer went with inferior iGo on the earlier units...and Pioneer-proprietary navigation on the newer ones. In contrast, Kenwood was smart enough to go with Garmin navigation, which works better and allows ANYONE to borrow a car and know how to use the nav system, since Garmin is so common.

    - Habit of Ridiculous Bugs: Until recently, if one acknowledged the map warnings at the wrong time, VR cataloging wouldn't work and people couldn't use the units by voice. And some techs told members of this forum that it was "a feature"...LOL. Are you @*#&$$$ kidding me, Pioneer? And let's not get into the dozens of other comical bugs that everyone on here has been complaining about for years (especially on the F-series units)....we could spend days going through those (e.g., mispellings, vehicle arrows not pointing in the correct direction, VR cataloging not working, slow boots and lock-ups, and the really comical bugs in all the F-series units).

    - Rebates to Move Large Numbers of Old Product *JUST* before Releasing Previously-Secret New Units: Yes, some other brands use rebates to clear old inventory, but not with the large rebates Pioneer used...and not RIGHT before a near-zero-notice release of new units that many folks would've preferred to wait for had they known they were coming. In fact, that's why I think an expensive replacement for the X920BT is probably on the horizon...a mysterious rebate has appeared.

    - Inferior Manuals: Some of the Japanese-to-english translation in all the Pioneer navigation unit manuals is really comically bad. In contrast, Kenwoods are pretty decent...and Tom Tom, Garmin, Magellan, etc. are all owned by western countries and have flawless technical guides.

  17. P.S. Anybody know if there's any sort of GPS antenna plug adapter out there to switch the D3-compatible GPS antenna plug to fit the X-series models?? People would really rather not have to re-install their GPS antenna and re-run the wire...especially if it's in a hidden, under-the-dash location.

And unnecessary splicing is ALWAYS bad...always introduces noise, and often makes the antenna (or a microphone) unusable.

Friggin' Pioneer...sometimes, I REALLY hate those guys...

  18. Thanks! That's a little more clear. And we finally got someone to give a straight answer on the GPS antenna thing, which has been floating around a few threads in this forum! lol

I imagine the wiring diagrams that come with the unit are helpful, but just in case, here's a potential backup wiring diagram...

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/audio- ... awing.html

Bottom line answer to the guy's original question: Pioneer had to go and change the *#@&%^$ harness for some friggin' reason...and they had to change the connector on the end of the GPS antenna wire. It is NOT a straight plug-and-play upgrade from the D3 to the X920BT. Thanks, Pioneer (not).

  19. Hmmm...

A little more confused now...LOL. We're three levels of quoting deep, now...and that's just two hard to parse...

    So, to clarify...

    1. WHICH color harness DOES NOT require any re-wiring? White or black?

    2. Which color is the "main" harness when you say "main"?

    3. For the plug that DOES require re-wiring, how many total changes are we talking? Is it just moving the mute wire over to accomplish the bypass, or is more than that?

    4. What does "probably" have to rewire mean? lol

    5. Does the existing GPS antenna plug fit or not??

    6. Can someone just do a STEP-BY-STEP on EXACTLY what needs to be changed for the guy who started this post? Exact rewiring...pin by pin...and get agreement between the two of you. You'd be helping not only the thread creator, but this guy as well:
