  1. Did you have to crimp or splice anything, or did you just pull out wires and put them back in the right place(s) in the new harness?

Are all the colors the same?

Also, people on here have said the XM antenna isn't the same (sounds weird to me)....did the old one fit?

Also, what else was different in the install overall?

  2. Just got another code for the next week - 30% off all these Pioneer products:

    tough times for Pioneer?

If recent history is any guide, Pioneer starts offering discounts and clearing out inventory when they're about to roll out a new unit and stop supporting the existing ones....they've probably got something coming that doesn't require the soon-to-die MSN service for traffic, etc. Bastards.

    tough times for Pioneer?

When you make shitty decks, that's what happens.

But seriously, they scrapped iGo to use their own in-house nav and it's awful. That sort of bean counter move to save a few bucks will ultimately lead to lost profit and customers. Guess Pioneer didn't do well with economics 101.

Pioneer has definitely made some odd decisions. Although I think iGo and their own in-house nav were equally shitty.

Still not sure why they didn't just license Garmin, Tom Tom, or Magellan software like all their competition. For example, Kenwoods all use Garmin's navigation software and Parrot's Bluetooth software now. It's great, because anyone with a Garmin can borrow a car with a Kenwood and instantly know how to use the navigation.

Pioneer also did us all a disservice by not offering anything to replace the MSN services everyone is losing in a year or so. Where is the replacement traffic solution for Pioneer units that require MSN for traffic?

  4. Agreed! I think however there will be alternatives offered for traffic once MSN is gone. But yea kinda sux they couldn't just build in the MSN tuner like they did in the x910!

    Really???

I'm not sure...my fear is that Pioneer will simply use this as a reason to sell us all completely NEW $1000 head units once MSN goes away....they certainly haven't gone out of their way to give new customers a warm fuzzy that they have a replacement option in mind.

Unless Pioneer comes out with a statement that they are even considering a replacement option or accessory (FM, HD, TDS, Navteq online, whatever) It's very hard to see why any new customer would want to purchase the current line of Pioneer AVIC units...the Kenwoods rely on proven traffic technology that's going to be around for a while because it's the same services that Garmin and others use....

  5. Guys:

Has ANYONE heard anything new from Pioneer about offering ANY other traffic option after MSN Direct goes away???

I know there are tons of threads in here about MSN Direct leaving in Jan 2012... but not as much about ANY replacement options (if any). I've seen folks saying there's currently no FM-RDS, TMS, etc.

Am I wrong, or is Pioneer simply going to tell everyone we're out of luck and use this as a reason for us to all buy new $1000 nav units in Feb 2010? That seems like pretty foul pool to me...bad karma.

  6. ...Honestly as much as I like my x920bt I'd have to say that if voice control and Nav features are your first priorities you should buy a Kenwood instead. Not this units strong suit, at all.

LOL...why would "Nav features" be a priority for a Nav unit?? That's just crazy...hahaha

  7. LOL...I seriously doubt they'll even bother anymore. Even the FIRST map updates for the D3 were waaay delayed and outdated by the time they came out. These guys don't really seem to be strong in terms of product support....

  8. ....there is an issue with VR commands if you don't hit the map OK button immediately after boot or after BT connects. The map OK button must be touched before BT connects....

So which is it...hit it AFTER BT connects or BEFORE BT connects??? You state BOTH at the same time in your post....

  9. Guys:

Even Crutchfield, which never has the best price on anything, has a huge rebate going for the Z110BT.

Beware....if history is any guide, Pioneer is about to launch a new model....last time they did a huge rebate, it was on the D3 and it was to clear the shelves for the new F-series that nobody knew they were going to launch at the time. After the rebate period, they quickly lessened their support for the D3. The same thing may be about to happen here...mysterious rebate in anticipation of a new model, followed by less support for the older stuff?

Of course, an alternative theory is that the price of all nav units is going down as new models come out and the new smartphones come with GREAT nav apps. There's an article in the NY Times this week that says that's exactly what's happening....

UPDATE: New model introduced at CES 2010. How amazingly predictive am I? Kudos to me, please.

  10. Sevral members on this forum have reported that all harnesses from the D3 are in fact the same as on the F/X series. The bypass however is slightly different. Please consult the F series bypass instructions for the proper bypass proceedere.

Okay...that's good info on the electronics harness. Thanks. Problem: I'm hearing conflicting info on the GPS antenna and microphone. Some people say they're exactly the same...no change. But this guy says they are DIFFERENT:

    viewtopic.php?f=48&t=29120&p=199772#p199772

    Who's correct?

  11. @1loudls:

Thanks...that helps a little bit, but I was hoping for a more definitive list of known differences. Hasn't ANYONE moved from the D3 to the 710 or the 910 on here?

I think you're saying the steering wheel control and speed pulse unit (CANPULSE4 in my case) should work, along with the harness that goes with it.

However, you're saying the major harnesses for all the audio, etc. MAY or MAY NOT be the same. Um...will it be obvious? Do the harnesses LOOK the same, but with different pinouts, or are you saying the entire harness and plug are different???

Also, what about the GPS antenna and microphone? Am I correct those are the same?

  12. Derk:

Take a look at my original post on this topic if you would:

    viewtopic.php?f=48&t=28925

Can you post there with more specifics? For example, I've been told the microphone is EXACTLY the same on the D, F, and X series. Are you SURE it changed? It looks like the exact same microphone. Same question for the GPS antenna...one of the head honchos of this forum has said the antenna and connector is exactly the same.

If you look at photos of the rear of the D and X series, the GPS and mic connectors sure LOOK identical.

See if you can post back at my original question and provide more details....thanks!

  13. All:

Too bad Pioneer removed the NavTraffic feature from the newer XM tuners and AVIC models...not that it was that great, either.

Pioneer should have preserved MULTIPLE options for a feature as central to modern in-car nav systems as TRAFFIC. They chose to rely soley on MSN, and now they're stuck.

The newer Kenwood car navigation head units units use navigation from Garmin now and use the traffic message channel (TMC) over the FM airwaves. That's never going away, so the Kenwoods will keep working darn near forever....

    Questions for Pioneer:

    1. Is it technically possible for the newer AVICs to receive software updates that would allow them to pull the traffic data from the various FM-based traffic broadcasts, such as the Clear Channel and TeleAtlas' Total Traffic Network (TTN)?

    2. Can a new XM-NavTraffic XM tuner be devloped for the new AVICs that doesn't require that special cable they used to use?

    3. I've read that the TomTom PLUS approach is to use your cell phone to gather traffic information from the internet and then Bluetooth it to the Nav unit. Can Pioneer set this up with a Bluetooth software update to the AVICs?

Some of you on this board appear to have a direct line of communication with Pioneer. I think they owe you a better answer to this issue than what I've read on here so far....

  14. All:

What is the entire list of changes -- especially install harness/wiring changes -- to move from a D3 (with the BTB200 and older XM tuner) to an X710BT?

Here's what I know so far:

    - KEEP Old XM tuner (GEX-P10XMT...will work w/IP bus, just won't get NavTraffic)

    - KEEP old GPS antenna

    - KEEP old microphone

    - KEEP old AM/FM antenna adapter (or upgrade to better one ...)

    - REMOVE BTB200 (Won't need it for Bluetooth anymore)

    - REMOVE old iPod cable and buy the new one for the F/X series

    Unknowns:

    - Will Soundgate CANPULSE4 & CAN-PIO harness (speed signal and steering wheel controls) still work with X710BT?

    - Do I have to re-wire anything in the RCA harness (don't think I'm using it...no camera, using iPod cable)?

    - Do I have to re-wire anything in the power cord/speaker connector or harness?

    - Do I have to re-wire anything for the bypass (D3 install was apparently bypassed)

    - Will the Metra fit-kit/fascia for the D3 fit the X710BT?

    - Is there a seperate install kit for the X710BT that's different from the D3's (the "Pioneer ADTVA133 Double Din Installation Kit")?

Any advice on how hard it will be to upgrade an install from from a D3 to a X701BT would be most appreciated!

  15. pulled >300 contacts from my Palm Pre just fine. when you say AV2P, do you really mean A2DP? The lack of support for this was my biggest gripe on the unit.

HSP is obviously supported. PBAP, but also OPP for if the phone doesn't support PBAP.

These are the only one's I've been able to tell it supports so far

Okay, so you're 100% sure the X-series supports *both* the PBAP and the OPP profiles?

  16. Does anyone know what Bluetooth profiles are supported by the X-Series AVIC units?

For example, does it support the Bluetooth....

...Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP), which would allow it to access phone books automatically on our phones if they support PBAP? Or does one still have to transfer contacts one at a time to the AVIC X-Series, using the...

    ...Object Push Profile (OPP)?

    ...What about AV2P, etc?

All I can find is that some of the X-series AVIC units are Bluetooth 1.2 certified. But that's just the Bluetooth communication standards level they are compliant with. The standard doesn't tell us which Bluetooth PROFILES are actually supported by the unit (Bluetooth is friggin' confusing...).

Anybody know what Bluetooth profiles Pioneer programmed into the X-series units?

  17. I've used a D3 with XM NavTraffic in the DC area for 18 months. It's accurate about 50% of the time at best. Like other posters, I'm sometimes sitting in a parking lot on 495 and the D3 shows the road as green, no issues. Other times, it's somewhat accurate.

Generally it's not that trustworthy. Also, there are SO MANY people driving around DC and EVERYONE has a GPS system of one type or another, so everyone simply gets onto the secondary routes which then get backed up themselves. And XM NavTraffic shows NOTHING for secondary routes or surface streets. So you have no idea if Route 7, or Nutley St, or Georgia Avenue are backup up because of incidents on the nearby major highways.

All the traffic services (XM, FM-TDS, etc.) are getting useless in my opinion -- because everyone has them now and everyone just backs up the secondary roads, with no way of knowing since none of the services report on those secondary routes.

The only car-based traffic reporting system that has a hope of working in the future (in my opinion) is the "Dash" series of nav systems they use a lot out in California. Those show ACUTAL speeds of all Dash-equipped vehicles in your area...so it's REALITY, not simply reports of what WAS reality 30 minutes earlier....

  18. All:

Does the old GEX-P10XMT tuner work with the newer F- and brand-new X-series AVIC units, particularly the AVIC-X710BT?

I've already seen posts on here indicating the XM NavTraffic won't work with these later units. That makes since, since the F- and X-series units either don't have the right data input connector and/or haven't been programmed to even use the XM NavTraffic feature of the older XM unit.

However, I need to know if the regular XM radio functionality from the P10XMT work with these new units. I'd rather not have to go out and buy a new XM tuner!

Any definitive response on this would be most appreciated! Thanks!

  19. OK... So I'm toying with the idea of updating my D3 to the 900bt or the 90bt... I'm on pioneers site and the only difference I can find in the models is the preout voltage and the warranty

Besides that... what are your thoughts? I really use my D3 for the ipod features (did they get any better in the F series?) and the bluetooth for my cellphone (I have a Treo 700p pre MR that still works with the BTB-200, did the F series BT get any better?) although I'm pretty sure I'll be getting a Palm PRE when it comes out so it shouldnt be an issue

Thanks to all for any info you can provide

    @ scrupul()us...

I had a Palm Pre for a month and tried using it with the D3 and the BTB200. It mostly did NOT work correctly.

    What worked:

    - Pre did the basic connection to the D3/BTB200 combo (after some trial and error) and did pass the name of the phone (e.g., "John's Phone") to the D3/BTB

    - Directly-dialing a number with the D3 touch screen worked for basic calling

    What didn't work:

    - There is currently NO WAY to transfer contacts from the Pre to the D3/BTB200 since the Pre does not support PUSHING of contacts via Bluetooth (i.e., the Pre does not currently support the Object Push Profile in Bluetooth). Same problem for the iPhone, by the way.

    - Call Waiting did NOT work. In fact, it was a total disaster between the Palm Pre and the D3/BTB200. When I was on a call and someone else called me, the D3/BTB would not display the Call Waiting message or let you toggle between calls. Instead, it would just ring CONTINUALLY -- even after the new caller had given up or the Pre started taking a message from the new caller. The D3/BTB would continue ringing throughout the rest of my call with the first caller. Sometimes the ringing would continue even after the first call had ended!! I would have to switch to the radio or XM to get it to stop...

I returned my Pre to Sprint for other reasons. However, if I change my mind and buy another Pre, I will NOT use it with the D3/BTB because of all this. Instead, I will keep my Motorola while hoping for some Pre updates to add OPP and better Bluetooth support with older devices like the AVIC D3/BTB.

I'm dumping my D3 anyway. The Pre is known to work well with the new nav system I'm considering.
