What does this do? I have tried both settings and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

I tried updating using this but got stuck at one of the spots. Everything worked fine unitl i got to this point

 

WHEN FINISHED PRESS (BACK)

TEST MODE PAGE 1

SELECT 6 - CLEAR BACK UP MEMORY (OK)

SHOULD SAY FINISHED THEN ASKS FOR RESET BUTTON TO BE PRESSED

PRESS RESET ON FRONT OF UNIT

After I did the application program it brought me back to the program force write screen and wouldn't allow me to use the back button to get to the clear back-up memory section. I ended up hitting the reset button to get out of the programing mode and it seems to have updated. But I'm wondering if I'm missing something by not clearing the memory?
