  1. I may have posted a thread about this last year, and since Sparkfun finally got around to stocking female dock connectors (albeit in SMD form) and parts in general for this generation of iPod hardware are getting plentiful and cheaper, it's time to forge ahead with my crazy plan!

     

    I'm currently prototyping a pass-through adapter that will do the following things:

    1. Charge the iPhone

    --This is done by pulling FW+ down to 5V with a voltage regulator and feeding it to USB+ (This is a little crude because it may require a heatsink, but I haven't poked around the CD-IB100II to see if 12V or 5V is more stable/present)

    2. Remove the "This accessory is not made to work with iPhone" nag

    --This is done by pulling USB Data- to 2.8V, and USB Data+ to 2V

    3. Allow serial data pass-though for music control from the head unit

    --Feeding the right voltage the the accessory indicator pin (I have a variety of peripherals to test this with and find the right value)

    4. Add a switch that disables the data lines and removes the "Accessory connected" screen so you can use the iPhone to browse songs instead of the slow Pioneer interface. When the switch is on, head unit and steering wheel control works as normal, as well as the fancy song display.

     

    For the first version I'm going to hack it together with off-the-shelf parts, meaning #4 will be accomplished by using a simple SPST switch. For future versions though I plan on creating a PCB and would like to use those tiny little push button switches to make things nice and neat. Initially, I'd probably just throw in a SPST on the Serial+ line, but I don't know if that would be enough. I might also need to change the voltage going to the accessory pin, and I don't know how to do that since those switches only come in SPST/momentary flavors. Essentially, I need to perform 2 functions with the same switch and have no clue how the electronics for that would go (in the absence of a DPST, so I'm guessing a momentary push button with a little bit of "magic" [iE stuff I don't know yet] would get the job done).

     

    By keeping the design that way, it opens up a possible expansion to enabling composite AV out. I would just wire in the right connectors, pull the accessory pin to the right voltage again and sneak in an apple authentication chip ripped from a cheap dealextreme cable. If I can use that momentary switch, I can make it remote and house it nice and neatly in a small cable so you can hide the composite connectors and the huge ugly Pioneer dock connector behind the dash.

     

    So yeah, some pretty fun stuff but it seems I'm hung up on a really simple problem. I'll keep this space updated once I finish building and testing the prototype.

     

    Edit: Upon further research, it seems I'm going to have to switch the Tx/Rx lines from the pass-through to the authentication chip for video output, but I won't be needing to do that until version 3-ish.

    I was posting in the iTouch compatibility thread about trying to figure out a solution to get out newer ipods and iphones to work with the old ipod units. This seemed pretty simple in theory, just rerouting the 5v to the USB line and pulling down a couple of pins with some resistors to get them into "charge" mode. From reading the passPORT page, it seems that is is exactly what this unit does...

     

    The product page is free from the "Select Pioneer head-units that use the CD-iB100 or CD-i200 iPod to IP-Bus adapter" incompatibility note so this week I'll be plunking down the $40 to see if it's worth it. If someone else tries it before me, then by all means go ahead and post your experience in this thread.

     

    Edit: Rather than possibly throwing $40 down the drain (I'm a poor college student) I've e-mailed technical support and asked them about the compatibility. I'll let you know.

     

    Edit 2: Wow, didn't realize the guy in the other thread got his prototype working... I must be blind. Either way, the only incompatibility I can see is if this adapter doesn't pass through the serial lines...

  3. It turns out the old dock I had doesn't even include pass through the serial lines... aka the Z1 doesn't even recognize it. This means the easiest thing is just going to be fabbing up a PCB to get everything where it needs to go. The upside of that is that it'll be mass-producible... Like I said I'll start a new thread when I tackle this problem with any form of dedication. Right now I'm content just plugging my ipod touch into my computer every now and then.

  4. All communication that allows song data, etc to be displayed on the AVIC and controlled through it are done using the Apple Accessory Protocol, which uses pins 12 and 13 (somewhere in the middle, just left of center if the cable is facing up as if you were plugging it in to your ipod). This is actually just a serial (rs-232) line, which explains why it's so slow, but it doesn't use USB or anything. Those are the only two pins that can do this sort of communication, so if they're damaged there's nothing you can do. Unfortunately Pioneer doesn't offer the cable through their parts store.

  5. I'm working on this little problem right now, and it seems that you need to pull USB data- to 2.8v and data+ to 2.0v to signal to the ipod touch that it needs to charge. I'm using an old dock with some resistors to solve this problem. If it doesn't charge then, I'll need to pull the firewire pin (if it is indeed charging by firewire which is 12v), regulate it to 5v using a 7805 and put that on the usb power pin instead. I'll make a new thread and let you guys know how it goes...

  6. I don't know why, but I don't have any control over what my phone is named in the bluetooth profile so now I have about 5 useless profiles set up in the Z1 under phone names I don't use anymore. Is there any way to delete the extra profiles and have it cut down to the 2 phones I use?

     

    Completely random but I can't be bothered testing it (I'm thinking "no"), does the Z1 support playing VCDs? My DVD laser seems to have bitten the dust, but I've never really used it anyway. Eventually I'm going to get a video-enabled ipod and put it on the AUX input (then add a switch coming out the dock to go from video AUX in to controlling it through the ipod interface).

  7. Knowing Apple, it's going to be some bullshit proprietary protocol (I don't have anything against Apple, but the iPhone lockdown is crap) rather than a respected contact transfer protocol like one that would be built in to the Z1/2 already. They'll probably make something up and then make manufacturers conform to their new protocol because hey, it's the iPhone and everyone has to make consumers happy.

  8. My car is very low to the ground as stock and has a rather stiff ride. I did notice it get worse when I was up to speed. However, I have tried this with the car stopped. I specifically tried going through the scenes on the Family Guy DVD without the engine running and it still gave me problems. I'm picking up a lens cleaning kit tomorrow and trying my luck.

  9. At this point would it not be easier to get a potentiometer with a huge amount of turns and reset after say a quarter turn instead of swapping out resistors? That would take a lot of the legwork out of switching resistors around (and money too, even though resistors are under a cent apiece) then if you find something that works, you can just measure the resistance at the amount of turns you have.

  10. It's happening with commercial DVDs... I got the unit as a demo and it had only been switched on for 2 weeks. Got a great price on it, too. I'm still within 30 days of buying it so I can take it back and since everyone's out of stock, I might get a Z2 as a replacement. After toiling over this install it just seems like a gigantic pain in the ass to get it replaced though.

     

    We had the same problem with a Sony DVD player here at the house, but that was with burned discs. It did it with my Pulp Fiction DVD and my girlfriend's immaculate Family Guy DVD, so I know it's not an isolated incident. As a last-ditch attempt I might try a DVD lens cleaner and see what happens; I've got nothing to lose at this point.

  11. I've had my Z1 installed for about a week now and I'm still not quite finished (VSS wire, reverse wire, and backup camera, as well as a permanently-wired phone charger). The only problem I've had to far is with DVD playback.

     

    It'll start off fine but as it gets to a certain point on the disc, it'll get all jumpy and give an "unreadable disc" error. It's at a different point on each DVD but is consistent on each DVD as to where it will stop reading.

     

    Audio playback is completely flawless and the DVDs are scratch-free, which leads me to believe that this is a laser problem. Should I try one of those cleaning systems or will that just add to the problem?
