  1. Thanks pionara. I believe by BUP & ACC you mean the BackUp and Power wires. I'll pull the fuse on both (camera has one) and the car radio fuse. Then I'll post back to see if anything changed or not. But just wondering, how will a power-off reset affect the fan?

  2. Hi everyone. I have the Pinoneer X930BT radio and recently updated to the latest firmware v4.000 and have recently been having some noise coming from the unit (not the speakers). The noise is like the motor inside is trying to eject a disc or something (yet there is no disc in the radio). Even during the firmware update I heard this noise now and again and figured it might possibly be the tiny hard drive inside of it (if it has one). But it is now doing it all the time when I'm just driving and listening to music (no card or disc is inserted). It's very annoying and I don't want it to burn up. I don't feel this is an electrical issue either as I solder all my wires and used heatshrink to make sure nothing would make contact, etc.

I'm not sure if it's a setting in the radio somewhere that it's trying to do something - perhaps that got reset due to the firmware update? I know I had to reset the time - but not sure what else it's doing or scanning for.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

  3. Thanks, but that full factory manual that I download for what says 2001 - 2004 Tacoma does not appear to be correct. When I open, it's specifically referencing 2003 (which I believe is when the 2nd generation Tacoma's started). I need 2002. I would really like to verify where to find my Reverse signal wire and my VSS wire for my 2001 Tacoma PreRunner. Any help is appreciated.

  4. reat article and post! I was just wondering if anyone can confirm that Green/Orange VSS wire found behind the glove box, was the needed VSS wire for the Pioneer radio? Also I'd like to verify if the reverse signal wire (Red/Black) found under the driver's seat was correct? I'm just getting ready to install a similar Pioneer radio into my '02 Tacoma and am thinking the wiring will be the exact same thing. This info has been really hard to find.

My only other question is regarding an "Illumination wire" that my radio has to support a day/night mode which controls the brightness of the screen when I turn on my headlights. It's supposed to dim the display on the Pioneer when they're on at night. I know when I turn on my headlights, the radio lights come on, but it's hooked up to the dimmer switch which controls the brightness of the dashboard lights (as I lower the brightness the radio lights dim too). I'm thinking of hooking the Pioneer's "Illumination" wire to this wire on the Toyota harness to provide it a +12V or 0V (since I never mess with the dimmer and it'll always be a 12V). dgilling0174 - Just wondering if you hooked this up too?

Thank you for your time and help.

  5. In hooking up my new radio (Pioneer AVIC-X930BT) to replace my factory radio in my '02 Tacoma, I need to run a couple of wire signals that are not located at the factory harness/plugs behind the radio. These are the reverse signal wire (for the backup camera) and the VSS (speed wire for the GPS signal). One is located behind the glove box and the other under the drivers side chair (under the carpet from my understanding).

So, I would like to run the same gauge wire over to the radio as what is used by Toyota in their wiring. Not sure what that is. I can't really tell by looking at the Metra harness (#70-1761) what gauge these are either. Maybe 18 gauge? This will also help me get a couple of correct wire tap connectors.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you,

  6. Thank you ThumperPup. The only wiring diagram I found for my Toyota 2002 Tacoma is

    http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/Toyota-Wiring.pdf

(referring to the "1987 and up" diagram)

However, it does not list any wires for illumination or dimming on the factory side of the list. In fact, the Orange/White and Orange/Black wires on the Metra harness are in slots that are indicated with "do not use". I don't think this diagram is completely accurate though as there MUST be a wire to the radio that goes to the dimmer/headlights. Because when I turn on my headlights, some lights around the radio knobs and behind the buttons light up. I did try using the dimmer switch on the dash tonight and as I dimmed the dashboard lights, the lights on the radio dimmed too. So, I could use this wire (since I don't every mess with the dimmer switch and it's always all the way up) and I think it would work fine. Just if someone dimmed the dash lights, it could cause radio display issues.

Like you said, I just need to determine which wire it is on the factory harness that is providing this headlights "on" signal and if it's positive (+12V) or negative (ground). My only other option is to find another wire that is NOT affected by the dimmer switch and only indicates if the headlights are on/off. Unfortunately, I've been unable to find any helpful wiring diagrams for my truck on this. Any help on that would be great!

    Thanks again,

  7. Thanks. I did contact Metra and they are unsure (which hasn't been helpful). :( The response they gave me was that if I hookup their Orange/White that say it is for "Dimmer" then that is the wire from my dashboard dimming switch. I never use that (i.e. adjust the dimming of the dashboard lights), but they say if I hook it up then dim my dash lights, the radio display would flicker and turn off. That makes sense.

The other wire I have on the Metra Harness is a Orange/Black wire which is NOT specified in the Metra wiring list. I wish I knew what that one was for! Instead of the Orange/Black wire, it lists an Orange wire as the "Illumination" wire, but I don't have a solid orange wire on the Metra harness.

Furthermore, I'm not sure what the Orange/White on the Pioneer AVIC-X930BT is really used for. The Pioneer documentation says to hook it up to the "lighting switch terminal" but does not give a purpose for it. Does it dim the display of the radio from a day/night mode? I'm believing that this is what it's for. If so,I need to know if it's supposed to be at 12V for the night mode or at ground (i.e. a positive or negative connection)? Maybe then I can find a connection point to when my lights are on and hook it up correctly.

Any thoughts or information about this is greatly appreciated!

    2002 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner

  8. I have Pioneer AVIC-x930BT that I purchased for my 2002 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner. I purchased a Metra harness #70-1761 to hook this up to my factory wiring.

The pioneer instructions say to hookup the Orange/White wire from the radio to the "lighting switch terminal". I see a "Orange/White" on the Metra Harness that is labeled "Dimmer". Would these to go together?

I also have a "Orange/Black" on the Metra harness, that is not listed on the Metra Packaging. However, it does list a "Orange" as "Illumination". But I don't have an Orange on the Pioneer unit (just White/Orange).

My understanding is that the Pioneer x930BT supports a "night mode" where when I turn on my lights the brightness on the radio dims.

Do I hookup the Metra Orange/Black wire to the radio White/Orange OR do I hookup the Orange/White with the Orange/White? Also what gauge are these wires as I need to extend one for my vehicle VSS wire and wanted to match it.

Thank you very much for your time.

    Best Regards

  9. Hello. I just purchases a Pioneer AVIC-X930BT radio to replace my factory radio in my 2002 Toyota Tacoma Pre-runner pickup truck. I was thinking about purchasing a backup camera for it. I see a reverse signal wire I need to connect to the harness so that this will work.

This wire is not present on the factory radio harness.

I've read that most all vehicles do have a VSS wire (I believe that is the reverse gear indicator wire) available somewhere. From what I've read here on the forums, is that it's under the passenger side dashboard (behind the glove box) or kick panel. Just that the information provided is not for my truck year/model. If anyone has a wiring diagram, pdf, or pictures for a 2002 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner to find the VSS wire, I'd greatly appreciate any assistance!

Also I was wondering about the "Car Speed Signal Input" wire. I guess this just assists with the GPS. I know it's not needed and a lot of people don't hook it up, but if I did want to, was just wondering where this would come from too.

    Thank you very much!

    Best Regards,
