1. I still want to know why the update isn't listed on the avic s1 page on pioneer electronics.com? Also, to long time users who installed the update, what differences have you noticied? Did it add anything? I need to find out why it isn't listed with instructions on the pioneer avic s1 page. God Bless

    Please!

Sanco, why don't you just call pioneer and tell them your problem, if sure they will tell you to send your unit in and they will do the rest. God Bless
  3.
The European version uses TeleAtlas 2005.1 maps which people want to update to the TA 2006 version. The US version uses Navteq maps. According to the manual you can restore/update maps if damaged. Soooo question is if you can overwrite the Navteq maps with the TA maps and make the US AVIC-S1 work in Europe. And more importantly can you then subsequently over write the TeleAtlas maps with the OEM CDs supplied with the US version to restore the full US functionality again.

    Any help is appreciated!
Hmmm I don't know? I know you can do that with the garmin products, but I would call pioneer at (800) 421-1404 and see what they say.
  4. Okay thanks a lot. I might go with the Garmin 360, just don't feel like paying a lot for the avic z1 when a garmin can do the same thing or better navigation wise. Also I like how they constantly update the device on their site and you can upload travel guides, and POI loaders and etc, and the excellent reviews on the garmin. But I'm still going to shop around. I might get the indash at a later date who knows? But why if the portable does the same thing? Thanks and God Bless
  5.
If you want a REAL navigation, get something from Garmin. You will not find anything better in my opinion. However, I do like my Z1 in the car. It does a very nice job. There are gripes and bitches when people own a real GPS and go to the Z1 or any other in car navigation. Some are that things don't work the same. Like being able to find an intersection, planning your own routes and such. The Garmin is nice cause you can do a lot of stuff on the computer and download it to the device. You cannot do that with indash systems. I wish you could. I use my Garmin when I go in someone elses car or if I travel on a plane. It makes finding some place easy especially if I am not familiar with the area. I also like the logging features that my portable has over the Z1.
Okay but the z1 has the lane information program, I don't think the garmin does? I really wanted to drive in big cities like atlanta, so the the lane information a big deal? I was looking at the garmin nuvi 360 does it route effectively without the lane information?
  6. Hello everyone. I'm comparing a portable vs. a in-dash navigation system, I strickly want a navigation system for navigation purposes don't need anything else.

So I was wondering why pay $2000+ for a in dash navigation like avic z1, when a avic s1 for 400 can navigate the same way, or some other portable device, and I can put it in other cars. Would a in dash navigation system be more reliable? But overtime I still will upgrade to a indash because you can add rear view camers to it and etc to a indash but just wondering for navigation purposes is it worth the money? Thanks and God Bless.
  7.
Hey guys,
I'm considering the purchase of an AVIC-Z1 and was about to buy it until I came across a post here about it being possibly obsolete in about a year. How often does Pioneer make new systems, or does anyone know what's coming out next year?
I'm just concerned about getting the Z1 and then something crazy comes out a couple months later.. lol. What do you guys think.. should I get it or are there rumors of what's to come in the near future?
Well I talked to a pioneer rep on the phone and he said they usually start production of new models in January and relase them about March-April. But I'm probaly going to get the avic s1 (portable version) and wait for the Z2, if it comes out.
  8.
Hi again ALL! Well, Thanks alot for all the replies to my first post and question! It looks like the majority of 1 owners really like it! So, I will be out to the stores this weekend to look for a good price for the Z1. I am a trained aircraft mechanic (worked for Eastern Airlines) and have usually done all my own auto repairs, so I think I will install it myself with the help from all the great people here! Thanks again!!
Don't forget to consider the avic s1, it uses navteq mapping data and seems fine to me, not to many complaints at all about it, in fact search the net for reviews there are many great user reviews on it like crutchfield and cnet, and epinions.com, I believe you can search by intersection and change languages and etc. But its not as high end as the avic z1. But I'm probably going to buy the avic s1 and wait for another product release of the avic line (maybe the avic z2?). Just a thought, God Bless.
  9.
I drive about 3000 miles a week. It's pretty rare that the tracking cursor leaves the road. There's only 2 places I know that it does this: US-27 between Carrolton and LaGrange, GA, and US-280 between Opelika and Birmingham, AL. Both of these roads have been re-routed in new construction.

My VSS wire is not hooked up. The cursor has never shown the vehicle travelling in a direction that I wasn't going-unless I take off before I have given it a chance to get it's bearings. Sometimes, if the truck has been shut off for some time, it may take it a second. I have recognized this, and learned to let it "warm up" before I jump off in the wrong direction.

I also have a Garmin iQue3600. It is very accurate, but the cursor has left the road as well at times. Great little unit, though.

My LandRover LR3's NavTeq based system is horrible. In the area I live in, it will not route me on a lot of local roads-even though they are in the map! It is very frustrating. One time the GPS even glitched out on me and had the vehicle driving in all the wrong places. Was pretty wild to watch it keep trying to find a road to put me on-several miles away from the true location.
Don't forget you can report teleatlas errors here http://mapinsight.teleatlas.com/cfl?Cli ... iveArea=MA

It's a limited relase version now, so I guess something better will come out soon. I guess they're trying to keep up with navteq. God Bless

  10.

Thanks yama and Gnat, yeah I hope to join the FBI so I really need a avic unit that's safe. So yama the avic is very safe in atlanta and will get me around good? Because I went there for a football game on a bus and if I would have drove by myself I probably would've been in serious trouble. I'm with you gnat I need a navi system for a big city and traveling in general. Thanks a lot. I hope to get one soon. Thanks and God Bless.
I used my z1 unit driving from Kennesaw Ga to Myrtle beach and the unit is pretty safe my only complain was i didnt have it in guidance view mode so i missed one turn but overall im still pretty new to this system and have a lot to learn but the unit kept's you on track. This Navi is just as good as honda/acura system which my dad on his 06 accord 2 door..
You asked about the z1 in atlanta traffic well it's very much on track and talks and tells me which lanes and exits to take via voice and on the screen overall it's a vast improvement vs the toyota navi unit..plus it has an excellent turn visualization system -- shows
the road in 3-d prior to making the turn.

if you have any other questions your welcome to email me at Tundrav8georgia@yahoo.com
Okay thanks! Yeah I'm going to really need it. You said the avic z1 is as good as the honda/acura system? Would you recommend a person who buys a honda to get it with the navigation? Or to not get the navigation, and install the avic z1? I was just wondering which of the two navigation systems were better. I'll be sure to e-mail you, especially if I get a FBI job there. Thanks and God Bless.

  12.
As I walk to my car this moring, I see a few odd looking car parts and wires next to my car. As I walk closer and look in the window, angryly noticed that someone finally did it. They finally stole my AVIC Z-1. After taking a quick glance to see if anything else was stolen, I called the police. Yes they also took my bluetooth adapter and navtrafic receiver. They did leave the CD changer, game port, and other quite valuable items (I guess not valuable enough). So I filed a police report and the forensic fingerprinting unit came by to investigate. Besides minor damage to the dash, I guess they knew what they were only going for. Luckily, everything was insured and should be all replaced. Will I re-install it again....who knows. Most likely not at this present location of living. OH WELL!!!

P.S. I guess that is what happens when living in the New York area.
See maybe you should e-mail pioneer about this! This is getting bad, we need some security features for a 2000 dollar unit, they have to address this. God Bless
