DMH-1770NEX White/Death Screen with colorful stripes

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I'm seeking guidance regarding my Pioneer DMH-1770NEX head unit. I've been facing a bootloop with the NEX splash screen and the last two months I've been facing an issue with it displaying a white screen with colorful stripes, even the backup camera won't activate. After researching, I found that this is a known problem linked to bad soldering on internal components for covid/post covid manufacturing. I also heard that because it's a manufacturer defect people ship their head unit models to pioneer office in California at no cost except shipping.

I contacted Pioneer support, and unfortunately, I learned that their policy has changed as of April 2024. Since my unit was manufactured in May 2021, it is no longer covered under warranty. Even if it's a manufacturer defect, they will not provide a repair if the unit is over two years old, so the information I've found didn't help there.

Given this situation, I am considering repairing the unit myself. I plan to purchase a soldering station to attempt to reflow any questionable solder connections. I’ve heard from others that this can sometimes resolve the issue, and I’m hoping to avoid the cost of a new unit. Due to having no experience with soldering but good learning skills I would like to know your opinions and tips on what to do, I would like to try fix the head unit myself because in the worst scenario I would just buy a new one.

My Questions:

  1. Repair Tips: Does anyone have experience with this specific repair? What steps would you recommend?
  2. Soldering Advice: Any tips for a beginner? What tools are essential for this kind of repair?
  3. Head Unit Recommendation: I have a Toyota Solara 2004 and have installed the backup camera and all essentials, what head unit would you recommend me to get if the repair won't work?

Thank you for any help!
