jakekooser
You don't need it. I didn't connect it in my 2009 ForTwo and the AVIC doesn't care. All functions that I have used in the last 3 months function without it.
S4
I never connected mine either and I have no issues what so ever. You are not going to be taking that car places where you would be losing GPS signal so you should be OK.
carlsbad0331
Your car is "smart" enough that it doesnt need a VSS!
jwq
From a smart forum: pin 11 in the instrument cluster is the one to hook to for Speed Pulse. Its an unconnected pin i.e. you can't hook into the wire coming out of it - you just have to shove that bared wire in there, tape it to the one next to it to try to stop it falling out, and presto - drive. It is also not apparent (wasnt to me anyway) from other postings that when you remove the plug from the instrument cluster, it is in 2 parts - a white outer housing and a black plug. Remove the black plug (it has a clip, and then slides out sideways) to shove your wire into pin 11. see also here: http://www.thesmartclub.com/board/showthread.php?t=549&highlight=speed+pulse

You guys must live somewhere where there are no tunnels.
