Single DIN to Double DIN conversion

I have an early 1980's mercedes and am wondering if it is even possible to install this unit (AVIC F310BT) in it

the stereo in there at the moment is just a detachable single din installed in like 2006, the pioneer unit is obviously a double din. below the stereo is the ashtray and cigarette lighter which is never used.

 

is this even doable?

You should probably check on a Mercedes forum. They'd be more likely to know.

any thing is possible with enough $$$, you would probably have enough room if you cut out the ashtray, you will probably have to heavly modify the dash to make it work and mount securely with a lot of fiberglassing, which is either gonna cost you a lot of time or a lot of money, again there is no such thing as "it dont fit"

I just realized something, i am right handed and i cant do ANYTHING with my left hand, if i lived somewhere that had right hand drive cars, i would never be able to use my radio! haha

check it out... you could do something like this. It wasnt to hard for me to do and is actually quite simple.

It looks like there's enough room with ash tray removed. It also looks like it will be mounted very low in your dash.
