Not sure how fluent you are with a soldering iron but not having a usb on the back annoyed the hell out of me too.  I soldered onto the existing USB pin and ran shielded wires out the back (I think data wires needed to be flip-flopped).  Now I have a permanent connection to my iPod. When I disconnect it I can still use the front USB if someone in the car wants to play their tunes.
