apologies from a complete noob, need a little help

So I'm new to the AVIC, I just got a used X710BT and installed it with the bypass without issue. So far I live it, it does what I need it to and has some really nice options. The only issue I really have with it is that the maps are fairly outdated and Pioneer wants $120 for new maps. I've looked through the forum and from what I can tell I need the FX3.1 Complete Firmware files and I keep seeing something about needing to back up. My questions are:

1. how do I back up, what programs are needed etc?

2. the maps in the FX firmware update are also outdated, can I just replace them with the 2011 maps? 3. I already have the 3.xxx firmware, does that matter?

 

Thanks in advance for any support, I'm new to the forum and the Avic series HU's but not to car audio/electronics, especially VW stuff and will offer support when and where I can.
