Hello, can you burn any other CD's besides store bought CD's to the hard drive?

Posted Mar 20, 2008 · 15:04 UTC#2

Yes. You can, for example, burn an audio CD in iTunes and rip it to the Z2 -- I do it all the time.

I don't know why it says that in the manual / product descriptions, but my guess is they were either trying to dodge the confusion of what an audio CD is (Vs. MP3 cd, which could be confused as a CD with audio on it), or they were trying to appease the RIAA. Doesn't matter really since you can do it ;)

Thanks for your help. The reason I asked is, my father has the Z2 installed in his 07 Suburban and he ripped burned CD's that he had made, and the unit took it, a month later the hard drive went out, do you think that it was the burned music, or did the unit just happen to take a crap.

been doing it for 2 years with no problems.

And if you burn the CD with CD-TXT, you don't have to manualy enter titles etc. either...

Yup!

Also, if you have a truly accurate rip, and re-burn to audio without cd-text, the Z2 will find the title in its CDDB database (assuming it's in there). Although, I've seen this fail. Best to just do CD-text if you've got it.

In my experience it has been better not to use CD-text and let gracenote find the CD. Why? Because all the voice recognition titles will load automatically with gracenote.

and how does it save it on the hard drive? does it save as a compressed music file like for example mp3 or does it copy as the way it was burned? i dont remember the file name which music is buned to cd

It would, except if I burn it on CD I usually make my own mix, so there's no way it can recognise the CD (as it doesn't exist in that form  )

Also, even with a 1-to-1 copy, the gracenote database sometimes doesn't recognize the newer CD's. The online databases for automatically generating the cd-text info are usually more up to date....

i thought that too but i popped in a random mix cd the other day and it found and named most of the songs. or does it refer to cd text if gracenote can't find it?

Yes it will. That's the only kind I use for this. No sense in wasting a CD that I'll never use again because the music is on the HDD. 8)

Nope, only if cd-txt is actually on there...

I'm an old school guy using mp3 music and I did not use itunes at all so would you mind to give me more details on how to go from mp3 to itunes, burn on CD(how about DVD?) and finaly upload to the hard drive?

Thanks in advance.

You don't necessarily need iTunes. You just need a program that will burn audio CDs. I use k3b in Linux. You could probably use Windows Media Player as well.

DVDs will play music on the AVIC line, but it will not rip to the drive.

You're only able to "rip" music from audio CD to the Z1/2/3. This means you cannot use Mp3's on CD or dvd, nor can you rip from an "audio DVD."

Besides iTunes, I'm not aware of any other applications that burn CD-text to disc. And since it's so easy, I in fact recommend iTunes, even though it does tend to seem a bit daunting to those used to winamp styles quick-players.

Once you've got iTunes installed and you're library setup, make sure you're burning options are set properly. Click through Edit, Preferences, Advanced, Burning, and make sure you have "Audio CD" and "include CD Text" selected.

Then just go in to your Library, create a playlist, add your songs, and burn that playlist to audio CD. with the burn button in the bottom right. Load the disc into your Z and it should come up perfectly.

What is the most effective way to store songs into the Z2? It says something about a limit of 400? Is that individual songs or catagories? Just looking for the best way to store music. Thanks

Posted Jun 18, 2008 · 14:45 UTC#19

You can have 400 different album titles and 400 different artist names.

Posted Jun 18, 2008 · 16:39 UTC#20

You know, I wonder if that limit is there only because there's only enough folders to hold that many songs. Has anyone tried adding folders to their partitions and going over the limit? :?:

Posted Jun 18, 2008 · 16:54 UTC#21

The folders are part of a database storage system. Simply adding folders will not work.

Posted Jun 18, 2008 · 22:28 UTC#22

So if I copy an entire cd , lets say- Metallica / The black Album - and there are 15 songs on this cd, how am I listing it and how much of the 400 is it taking up? Thanks

Posted Jun 18, 2008 · 22:54 UTC#23

1 Artist and 1 Album of the 400 allowed.

What is weird is that it looks like there is enough room (folders) for 1000 albums, but there is the 400 albums limit.

I have verified the 400 artist limit, but I haven't reached 400 albums yet.

When you get to 400 artists you can still load albums, but the new artists won't show up in artist mode.

I got to more artists than albums because of compilation albums.

Well that sucks...

I have to run back and forth with 20 songs until I get my entire 1000 songs over to the Z2?

(It's coming by the end of the week)

That is seriously gay.
