I'm sure those of you who have an Avic D3 and a new iphone are aware of this problem.

I have an ipod connector for the D3 and when i connected it to the iphone 3g, the 3g said that charging was not supported.

Does everyone have this problem?

I heard it had something to do with firewire technology.

If this is the case is there a ipod wire that supports the 3G now?

I read that the new F series does, but ill post in that forum with other questions.

I got the new 3G Iphone also. I plugged it in and mine said the same thing. I didnt test anything esle. I did connect to my Z with bluetooth, I dont have any number in my phone yet. I made a few calls on it, the people on the other end said it sounded fine. On the D3 if you hook up the CD-BTB200 bluetooth will it play songs and video thru the bluetooth module. Also will the Ipod cord show Iphone videos or internet???

You are telling me that you can listen to your music via Bluetooth on the D3 with iPhone? How?

Posted Jul 14, 2008 · 02:19 UTC#4

On my D3X there on the modes screen it has a bluetooth audio button.

Its the screen that has AM/FM/XM/Sirius/Multi-CD/Bluetooth Audio/AV1/AV2 touch screen buttons

Posted Jul 14, 2008 · 03:41 UTC#5

Oh your was a question as well.

No it will not play music via bluetooth (or videos)

This is because iphone does not support the required bluetooth platform (AD2P) i think its called (Stereo bluetooth)

I hope this is a future upgrade, however.

Has anybody checked if it actually still charges the phone? Maybe it's just a software message glitch... it might still actually charge the iPhone 3G (at least that's what I'm hoping).

Does the D3 (with iPod kit) charge with Firewire? If so, were hosed - that is what Apple disabled.

Posted Jul 14, 2008 · 03:58 UTC#7

The problem is the new iphone does not support firewire charging which is what the pioneer cable is wired to. It will require either someone making an adapter that reroutes the firewire 12v line to the 5v usb line or pioneer releasing a new ipod cable that uses the usb 5v line.

Posted Jul 14, 2008 · 04:13 UTC#8

yeah they just need to release a new ipod cable. someone let me know when they do that.

Certainly not firewire, Apple has not used firewire in any ipod devices since the 4th gen ipods. There is no firewire controller in the iphone 3G. USB2 only.

Posted Jul 14, 2008 · 13:01 UTC#10

There is no Firewire controller, but the D3 uses the Firewire 12V pins to charge the iPod. Every iPod/iPhone device before the 3G iPhone had the 12V pins available for charging.

Now they will need a new cable that has a built-in voltage regulator to step 12V down to 5V and charge on the USB 5V pins which has been in every iPod/iPhone device since the 4th gen.

I wouldn't hold my breath.

looks like I'm just have to get the headphone jack then cause I can't afford the F series!

Posted Jul 14, 2008 · 17:27 UTC#12

Just got an email back from pioneer after inquiring about a new cable.

Thank you for contacting Pioneer electronics inc.

No Sir, the D3 is no longer in production and there is no information regarding an update of any time

I am working on a fix for this problem, as my 3g iPhone doesn't charge either with my CD-IB100II Check out my post/instructions here (still in progress)

If you're very handy, you could rewire the iPod connector to move the power wire from Firewire pin to USB pin, then cut that same wire somewhere in the cable and put a 5V voltage regulator inline.

What would be perfect is if someone built this as a female ipod connector to male ipod connector. So we could just attach it to the end of our ipod cable.

Bonus being it should work for anyone with factory ipod controls.

That's a good idea, but I've never seen any kind of cable with a female iPod connector on it. You could possibly modify an iPod dock. That might be inconvenient though, depending on where you keep your iPod in the car.

Are you talking about a female USB cord? If so I have one you can have to practice with. Let me know I can ship it to you.

No, an extension cable that has a female iPod connector on one side and a male on the other. If one were to modify such a cable and add a 5V voltage regulator inline, it could work with any and all iPod connectors, not just Pioneer.

A company ought to come out with such a thing, and who knows, one might. There wasn't a need for it till the 3G iPhone so that could be why such a thing didn't exist before.

Id be willing to pitch in a few bucks toward someone buying one to modify, if once done made sucessfully, they could do one for me. would this allow internet from iphone 3G to be displayed on the Avic?

I am in the process of making an adapter for the iPhone that will still allow the head unit to control the iPhone, and also CHARGE it. If all goes as planned, it will be an easy mod (not counting the research and then the building part), all you would do is plug the Pioneer interface cable into my adapter, either plug in or hard wire the 12v-5V power source, then plug the adapter into your iPhone.

I contacted a couple people at Pioneer, and they both had the same answer:

"Thank you for contacting Pioneer Electronics, Inc.

At this time Pioneer have no plan of modifying the iPod adaptor.

Any modification in the future will be up to Apple.

Thank You,

Pablo

Customer Service Representative"

"At the present time we have no plans to change the adaptor.

Thank You,

Clark"

Great to know that we have multiple people working on a solution dcarrington01.

IMHO, the best solution will:

-be easily removable so we can switch between iPhone and iPod

-consist of the fewest components (an extension ipod cable which has been repinned for usb power and had the voltage stepped down from 12V to 5V)

-allow for full audio, video, and menu integration with as many pioneer headunits possible

-no affect bluetooth integration

Hopefully we can get close to realizing all of these. I might give it a go myself.

It wouldn't even need to be removable, all iPods 4G on up will charge via USB.

The 3G is the only one that wouldn't charge with the cable.

Although... an adapter could have a simple 78M05 or 7805 voltage regulator in it with the 5V going to USB and leave the 12V going to Firewire intact, it would be compatible with 3G iPod and the new iPhone.

That depends. I don't think we know if the iPhone is sensing the presence of voltage on the Firewire pin and displaying the message. Or if it's sensing the lack of voltage on the USB pin.

I think I also remember reading a forum post somewhere about previously unused pins being used or jumped for new generation apple devices. I will see if I can dig it up.
