Has anyone tried already to run the Avic software on a pc. I'm planning to install Microsoft virtual PC to give this a try. I used the same application to run Vista under XP.

I think there must be a way of running the Win CE stuff directly on a pc. That will save a loooooot of time spend in the car, waiting for your booting Pioneer HU.

What are your thoughts? Experiences? Recommended approaches?

Thanks a lot!!

*Edit*: I found that Microsoft already has a Win CE 5.0 emulator available for download. Using this software it should be possible to install and run WinCE from a USB stick...

i was trying to get a win ce emulator running on my pc but i dunno im gonna download all the sdk for win ce and try again

Now THIS would be cool. I tried once just messing with mine, and it was such a PITA with my laptop (which is more of a erm desktop replacement with a 17" screen and weighing in at like 10 pounds) bumping against the steering wheel.

It works on 32 bit Vista. Too bad I have no idea how to get it to run anything from the F90. I'm guessing you have to emulate all the hardware inside the unit for it to work...

I was able to run the emulator. However the then navigator won't start, if I click the "Tel" I get an error and if I click on the Navi, I get a white window with NaviMain. I’m using: Microsoft Device Emulator V2 (8.0.60801.00) and when the emulator starts it says Windows Mobile 6.1

that's normal . The hardware isn't present .

So what do I do?

nothing , live with it :)

Hahahahhaha... well... that's true

Guys I've already gone down this road. As of right now you can't run any of the AVIC software on windows device emulator. The reason is that Microsoft have not release a compiler (platform builder) that supports ARMv6 instruction set. Also the latest Microsoft Device Emulator does not support ARMv6 Instruction sets as well.. Thus you can not run the avic software on the emulator so dont waste your time trying.

The processor for the AVIC F-series is ARM1136JF (ARMv6 instructions set supported).

Im awaiting their SDK, once it is release I can create software for this unit, maybe even a new Kiosk GUI that is more flexible than the current one. 3rd party apps without needing to boot into testmode.

PS: It doesn't matter if the hardware is present or not, Ive already try runnign the AVIC software on my mobile phone which support the ARMv6 isntructions and it ran perfectly! The only thing is my phone screen is too small for me to do anything. If you have HTC Tilt you can try it.

From what I see so far, It is very likely once the SDK is release you guys will see a burst of new apps for this unit.

Yeaaaa.... Thanks so much for that valuable info... We all appreciate it. I can't wait to put my hands on an emulator !!!

From Microsoft Website

Fast Interrupt Mode on ARMv6 and ARMv7 Microprocessors Not Supported

8/28/2008

The ARM v6 and ARM v7 microprocessors include a fast interrupt mode. Windows Embedded CE 6.0 does not support this mode. Proper support for fast interrupt mode requires changes to the kernel and the compiler.

Do not use fast interrupt mode because it changes the behavior of some instructions, such as load multiple and store multiple. These instructions are normally atomic instructions. That is, they complete all their work before returning or allowing an interrupt. In fast interrupt mode, this the atomic nature of these instructions is not guaranteed, so the operation can be interrupted. This means that the data could be changed before the instruction completes. This can make code difficult to debug.

I am not really sure that the problem is with ARMv6 -- iGO runs on pretty much any Windows Mobile 5-6 PDA and does not seem to have requirements for a very advanced ARM processor. And if MS does not have a compiler for it, how would NavNGo build their software? ^)

Check the processor on the pda and get back with me. I know so far the pda that i have are all ARMv6 instruction set compatible. Most PDA nowadays are. If you talking about IGO Software alone (the one that is design for pda), it can be compile for any platform. The AVIC software itself is compile/uses the ARMv6 instructions. Remember software is backward compatible. ARMv6 and ARMv5 below all can run within our AVIC. IGO sottware can run on pda because it is compiled for compatibility with vast number of devices. If you are a cs major you would know. If the AVIC software is coded to utilize or compile with ARMv6 instruction sets, any device or emulator that doesn't support the instruction will not run.

Also yes of course the Manufacture have the compiler for it! However, Microsoft did not release the platform builder that support ARMv6 yet to the public. Also not just the compiler you also need the device emulator which I know the latest version today only support up to ARMv5 only.

I might not be a very l33t coder, but I do not only have a CS major, but have been professionally developing software for the past 15 years or so.

iGO 8 runs just fine on my phone that has ARM920T core (ARMv4T). There aren't even that many Windows-based PDAs that use significantly newer cores.

Now, I did not disassemble iGO from AVIC and check what architecture it was compiled for. It is possible that NavNGo built it differently for Pioneer. There might also be other executables on the AVIC that were built for the newer architecture.

PS. Just checked. iGO from AVIC starts on my phone, ARMv4 and all.

Here is a screenshot of Device Emulator running IGO8 (not the AVIC IGO). This tells you that IGO8 runs on most hardware architecture. However, Device emulator can not run AVIC IGO. Borris if you are right about IGO software running on your ARMv4 processor, it might not be that the software was compile with ARMv6 instructions. However it is definitely compiled differently than of IGO8.

Just found out something. I take it back that the AVIC IGO can't run on Device Emulator. It does run however exit right away. But I can be certain that some of the Kiosk exe file can not be run with the Device Emulator, whereas it can be run on my PDA.

Yes, iGO on AVIC is a special build for Pioneer, and includes items for integrating with the AV system. I do ont think though that they would build to a different architecture for a box that, in the end, still runs the same Windows CE as everybody else.

I just ran ezrider.exe through a disassembler. Looks like a generic ARM executable for Windows CE.

At least all the strings are nicely visible. For example, this one:

d:\\iGO8_R1\\proj_pioneer\\output\\pocket pc 2003(armv4)\\ppc_release\\ezrider_pna.pdb

It also is June 27 2008 build, verison 8.0.0.45041

I just figured out how to launch my own kiosk without going through the AVIC one :P working on some stuff right now.

Cool.

Let me get this straight... Are you saying that maybe you will be able (and someday we also) to emulate the GPS software so we can test it on the PC before saving on the Pioneer's??? That would be awesome.
