For others that are looking for a nice compass to go with their custom screens, here is one that I made.

That's great but I don't have the files for the rest of the skin, can you post your data.zip file?

Post up a little how-to with some line additions and deletions and I'll add this to the FAQ.

Skicrave, I don't really know how the compass mod works. All credit goes to Stephanie. What I did was take the Sci Fi theme that Stephanie made (scroll down on link)

http://avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php? ... ht=#117339

and with her help deleted out things and custom added things by changing the map colors and photo shopping the bmp files. In the Sci Fi theme the compass is already in place, as seen here.

Again I don't know how she did it, all I did was make me a custom compass (file that I posted above), renamed it to steph_compass.bmp and copied it over the old compass pic thats in the ui_pioneer\800_480 in the Steph Data.zip I have had some other members who use the Sci Fi theme and had PM'd me requested for a nicer looking one, so I posted the file. I'm still working on my custom theme but I will post up all the files when I am done.

Alot of the help Stephanie gave me is here.

This looks perfect!

Can you post your Data.zip file? I would like to simply implement the theme as you have it as the mods you made are exactly what I want..

Thanks@@

Simple code to make the compass work

;compass

Just change the bmp to what ever name and mask and change the x and y.

What ever compass you use is must be "N - ne - E - se - S - sw - W - nw" order for our Navi to display it properly.

Posted Nov 01, 2008 · 17:48 UTC#7

thats really nice looking; if my direction wasnt already in my rearview mirror I would switch to that.

Posted Nov 04, 2008 · 19:30 UTC#8

is there any way to get the compas to display in degrees instead of cardinals? Also would like to know how to get the altitude/elevation displayed. I'm really new at this; just got my f90bt the other day and have already updated to firmware v. 2.00 and done the software override for dvd viewing. Beyond that, I'm still an idiot. noticed a post in the thread that gave simple code for doing this, but how will i know what it looks like before uploding it to my hu? which bmp's to use?

bchurch- Spend some time searching on the site and reading through the completed modifications thread. We haven't found a way to display the compass in degrees yet, that information isn't available within the F-Series firmware.

Altitude can be displayed, and has been covered before.

If one really wants to have a degree layout, you could use linear compass bitmap (like the one in screenshots here) with degrees painted on the bitmap itself. There's at least one skin (Choup) that does that)...

where do you put the actual code

what do you mean by "name and mask"

Posted Nov 06, 2008 · 18:20 UTC#12

\data\ui_pioneer\800_480\ui\navigatemap_800_480.ui

I put it in the first layer.

"Name and Mask" I meant change the names I have to what every you are using if different.

The code has to find the exact match of the images in the \data\ui_pioneer\800_480\ directory.

do you guys use your old data.zip from the older updates on the new 2.0 update? because the data.zips are quite different they cleaned up some code and added things here and there i think it would be best to move your script edits to the new version :/

Can someone please explain what the term "first layer" means. I have seen this several time now and I do not quite grasp what exactly this refers to. Thanx for the assistance.

Posted Dec 03, 2008 · 00:17 UTC#15

First layer mean saved directly to the SD card. Not saved into a folder that is already on the SD card.

Please pay more attention. This has nothing to do with SD card directory structure (where it would have absolutely no effect on anything at all).

First layer means that these lines were added to the first element of the navigatemap_800_480.ui file.

(Layers are basic containers of visual elements of iGO)

Ok Boris you got where I was coming from on this. Now I suppose to clarify the question on my part, how do I know what part of this first layer is meant. Or rather more specifically how can I as a person who is not part of the code writing universe determine where to place this in the file?

Posted Dec 03, 2008 · 22:32 UTC#18

Order within a layer generally is not important. I would suggest choosing a layer that already contains elements with similar visibility settings (i.e. visible at the same time) to the ones you are adding.

If adding a compass replacement, the layer that contains the existing compass would be a good choice. In the original skin, compass is in ui_NavigateMapButtons layer (which happens to be first in the file), so this would be the logical place.

For non-programmers, you can think of layers as transparencies. They have their own size (if not specified, same as screen), position, and how far to the back or front they are. On the layer, you paint actual buttons, images, text, etc. Then, you can show, hide or move the entire layer at once, and it will apply to everything within the layer...

OK I put it where in the file and it shows very nicely on the screen, I am so proud of myself. Now however I have noticed that it seems to keep reverting back to always saying north. I will turn and it will start to move like it is going to show a different direction but then it will snap back and show north as my heading no matter which direction I am headed. I obviously must have missed a step. Any ideas as to what I may have missed?

Are you sure you're not switching to 2D mode, which is always North-Up?

Posted Dec 05, 2008 · 01:21 UTC#21

nope not switching modes. The linear compass is on the left of the screen just above the route info box that I have not yet removed. The linear compass display changes direction when I turn but after driving for a short distance it will snap back to the N. I thought maybe i missed a step or something and there might be a line that was supposed to be elimated when I add this code. If that was the case it would explain this maybe or atleast I am hoping. THis is what it looks like in the file navigatemap_800_480.ui right now;

;compass

Was I supposed to do something different?

Posted Dec 05, 2008 · 02:28 UTC#22

If you comment out the old compass info it would probably give you better results.

ok tried your suggestion and now I have a new problem. I believe that the linear compass.bmp that is located in the ui_pioneer/800_400 file is actually backwards. When I am headed north or south it reads correctly but if i am headed east it says west and vice versa. Also when headed North or South the East and West are reversed. So when heading south instead of east being on the left it is on the right. What the heck planet were they on when they were drawing that. I am going to try a new .bmp for the linear compass and see if it corrects the problem.

UPDATE: Ok the Linear compass.bmp that is in the file was the problem. Installed a new .bmp with the N E S W in the correct order and it works perfectly. I also tweaked the size slightly and that helped the .bmp's visiblilty on the screen. You'd think that somoene at Pioneer woulld have caught that the .bmp was screwed up. I mean seriously there is no realistic place in the universe where you can be facing south and have east on your right. Felt like a fool when I realized that .bmp said N W S E man am I glad I got those hooked on phonics tapes afterall.

Compass _image_ for iGO needs to be reversed because internally it is controlled by the map rotation angle, not heading angle (or something like that :) )
