Looking through all of the .ini files and such, I found a litle gem that is called preload.ini that I believe tells the system what to load at startup.

The problem happens to be, that 90% of the maps and such that are preloading... are from Europe. It looks like this:

[1]

key="SYS"

name="System data"

file1="data.zip"

file2="content/map/basemap.fbl"

file3="klavika_medium.ttf"

file2="content/building/gnome/gbr_birmingham.phr"

file3="content/building/gnome/irl_dublin.phr"

file4="content/poi/eu_west1.poi"

I simply deleted everything except data.zip and saved. When I loaded up the system and it was ready to go, I noticed that everything is more zippy! Map drawing, button pushes, etc... all seem damn near instant. If I am correct about this file, I am eliminating at the bare minimum, 13 files that are loaded when the system is turned on and kept in memory the whole time the system is functioning. Which is pointless, if you dont live in these regions that are loaded. I even see a bunch of POI's and even voice files above.

When I was finished, the .ini looked like this:

[1]

key="SYS"

name="System data"

file1="data.zip"

file2="content/map/basemap.fbl"

file3="klavika_medium.ttf"

Hope this helps out.

well this would be excellent, I will try it in a bit. Where is the file located?

*** nevermind , found it in the config folder

Thanks

I don't think there is klavika font on AVIC, so this can also be removed, probably...

Yea, sorry about that. data.zip/config/preload.ini

Good to hear I am not seeing things. :lol: Not sure why Pioneer would load foreign regions by default for American units. It seems a huge waste of resources, especially since the unit takes a decent amount of time to start up already. Regardless, I am glad it worked. Now if I could only get into the media player and allow for ID tags and album covers for wav files, I would be set.

Don't know what to do eat or do this!!!! Great Find! :lol:

edited] My boot-up time was close to the same, (I don't us a Ipod) but when fully loaded I notice a huge increase of sensitivity. Barely had to touch anything to select what I wanted. Map regen increased wow.

I'm glad to have stuck with the Avic and found this site.

Thanx Extreme!

Tried it for fun and did not see any difference.

And sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but this won't make any appreciable difference for the simple reason that US units don't haveany of European data files so absolutely nothing extra is loading.

Posted Nov 13, 2008 · 04:26 UTC#9

i tried and also didn't see a difference. maybe i'll see some when i play with it a bit more, but i'm not holding my breath.

Posted Nov 13, 2008 · 05:36 UTC#10

i just did this...the boot time was in the low 20 seconds, cd started around 13seconds. (this is jus rough numbers).

borism-yes, there are no euro maps, but just like windows...it might take the extra time to search and try to load the euro maps. just a thought.

overall, i did notice the response is alot sharper(quick).

ill play a little bit more.

Well, it might speed up loading time by some fraction of a second it spends looking for a file and not finding it (assuming it does not know what region it is coded for to begin with), but how would it affect response time later on? Same amount of data is loaded (or not loaded) either way...

Posted Nov 13, 2008 · 06:22 UTC#12

either way, you'd expect a company like pioneer to spend an extra 20 seconds and tidy up their code for region specific hardware..

lazy coders.. sheesh =)

Hi guys, can someone help me out here. I dont understand where you are finding these files. are they on your computer? and if so, where? SD Card? Im stuck. Thanks

agreed, it will only take a fraction of a second off... these scripts run faster then you can blink your eyes... if it fails to find script when loading it skips... it wont hold up the system

must be wishful thinking then... :oops:

Could this be comparble to keeping your registry clean on a usual Win OS. Especially on old startup files that no longer exist, but the OS still trys to load, search for something, or just cache usage?

Du-No...

Posted Nov 13, 2008 · 15:55 UTC#17

So does this actually make a difference? I would really think this is something Pioneer would tidy up if they're trying to make their unit faster.

Posted Nov 13, 2008 · 16:29 UTC#18

i didn't notice any difference

Well, to some degree. If you have startup entries in the registry referring to programs that are no longer present, it might try running them, will find that the file does not exist, and keep on its way. With AVIC using a solid state flash drive and all files being in specified directories (no need ot search for them all over), even if it were trying to load that data, your time savings would be minimal.

You'd get much better results from cleaning up UI files and removing states and elements that are never used... At least those do have to be parsed on startup...

Posted Nov 13, 2008 · 18:42 UTC#20

I am going to look all of the files over in the unit itself and make sure that none of these files, namely the voice files, are present. I would imagine the french and the spanish would be in the unit. If this were the case, these files would not be loaded at startup, freeing up some memory for other things. I really did feel more responsiveness to the unit when it came to button presses and map drawing. The startup was merely speculation.

On another note, it seems as if, with the newest update(2.0) that Pioneer plans to add a lot of voices to the unit. Go into the update zip, specifically to: LPUE080/APL2/iGo/ScanSoft/RealSpeakSolo/speech/components and you will see another 16 files(names) listed besides Samantha. Whether or not these are already in the unit, I do not know, but if they are... it opens up the opportunity to use them. The files are quite large and are listed as .dat and have .dll files attached to them.

Now whether or not these are just worldwide voices that arent cleaned up for the US unit, i have no idea. If not, it looks very promising.

Those files were there in a previous firmware as well...

Are they used? Or are they just extra bloatware that was never edited out by the Pioneer coders? I am trying to understand this system and what is used and not, in order to make a cleaner install and ultimately get everything running faster.

Posted Nov 13, 2008 · 19:49 UTC#23

I very much doubt that they are used (there are no corresponding configuration files in CONTENT\SPEECH. They look like default voices from RealSpeak Solo distribution.

Most likely they can be cleaned out with no ill effect, and we'd gain a few megabytes of free flash space...

Does anyone have any idea if the EU maps can be deleted from a UK unit to make it faster?

That would be great for us guys on this side of the water!

Posted Nov 13, 2008 · 20:14 UTC#25

You can delete maps you don't need, but it won't make the unit significantly faster. Navi software loads map data as needed.

Of course if you ever drive across the channell you won't see much of anything :)
