no need to reinvent the wheel here guys:

http://scienceofspeed.com/products/engi ... HKS_CAMP2/

This works with any OBDII car... you would just use the A/V Input for the HKS CAMP2 as a source and switch over to it as needed... it has a remote control so I guess you could write a small app to control it? Or set it up on a 2nd LCD screen..... 8)

Downside about this is that you won't have audio while looking at this, correct? Can you jsut switch over the video portion and keep the radio playing? I'm thinking no?

The other option is to try to see if you can use the backup video feed, but think this could cause complications also...

yea thats why it might work better with a 2nd LCD screen which isn't always an option for most cars... my NSX can have 2 LCD screens in the console tho so thats a plus :)

Post some pics - wouldn't mind seeing that setup.

Thx,

That sounds like an awsome idea. Also I have been thinking of a way for built in radar. Annnd how about if cop cars could show up on the gps? Don't most police cars have a gps gig in them these days?

If your going with the ODB2 option wouldn't more ram need to be installed on the unit? A friend of mine added more ram to an older xbox.

Are these bad iseas?

Ha, sheesh guy youve got alota complicated idears..

And xbox's are out of the question. Its all an entirely diffrent coding format. most people wouldnt even know what to do with an .XBE..

Also, adding RAM to an Xbox is tough. Soldering FINE prints that a machine noramlly does.. well hope ya got a steady hand.

So, noone responded upon my idea of Autoenginuity well, mabey someone will read this now..

POCKET PC BASED.

Im gonna be tinkering with this soon enough. I just need to figure out a way to get a cable that will work for me.

"Requirements

Windows Pocket PC 2002/2003 operating system (V4.2 Only)

Windows Mobile 2003SE/2005 operating systems (V4.4+)

Windows Mobile 5/6

64 MB of free ROM space

The required serial sync cable is NOT provided. Please contact your Pocket PC vendor for the correct serial sync cable. HP 19xx series do not support a full serial interface as required, and will not work."

I think you'd still have your work cutout for you. windows 2002/2005/5/6 Isn't the same ase plain CE. Also then u'd have to make a usb-serial adapter work. I like the idea though!

:D:twisted:

Are you planning on putting another screen under the avic?

There may be room there??

Nice ride btw --> here is mine:

Sorry - getting off topic...So I wonder if anybody is actively working on this...

Sweet - actually the 2nd screen can go above it in the JDM nav pod... this option was a factory option in japan and was used for OEM nav back in the day. but now it can be used for other things :)

I didn't want to post until I'd made some progress but I thought I'd let you know I'm giving this a shot.

I've written source code for windows mobile that'll read the data from a blue tooth OBD scan tool. The code will be very easy to port to CE 5 but I'm going to need some sort of bluetooth manager first so I can establish a connection between the AVIC and my OBD tool.

I'm going to spend some time this afternoon looking around - I'll post more if I get anywhere.

Hey all, I actually write tuning software and I got me a F500 not too long ago. My first thought was if I could write an app to run on it and pull CAN data and send tune data to our car tuning hardware. Below are a couple links to videos I created a few months back (have improved since then) of the software running on the F500. The first is a video I created for my bro so he could see how it works, he'll be cleaning up the gui. The second video some of you may recognize. At the time I created that video, I hadn't been able to update the CAN data on the actual GUI you see. I can now.

I love these units.

Very Cool. I'll waiting for the software.

Does this software need usb OBD cable right?

then it need one usb port on the unit, so i can't using ipod to be music player when using OBD?

A better question would be, does this particular method require a USB>OBD-II Interface or just a USB>OBD Cable? USB to OBD cable 5$ USB to OBD Interface 30 $.

Posted Oct 07, 2009 · 08:53 UTC#46

Hey guys, I wrote the software to interface with our own hardware used for tuning. If you all want to be able to use it without our hardware, find me whatever retail part you'd like to use to connect the unit to the obdii port and I'll make the software work for it as well.

I currently have one of the Scangauge II devices

http://www.scangauge.com

It is a great piece of hardware and software. If there was a way to mimic most of it's functions on the AVIC, that would be amazing. It has a fully functional trip computer with all of the fuel functions also. Plus code reader/resetter. It can monitor up to 4 sensors at once. Plus it's back light's colors are user programmable to match any color dash lights like the AVIC.

Posted Oct 07, 2009 · 18:15 UTC#48

is it a possibility for you to just integrate the USB interface into the system so all we would need is a USB to ODB-II cable? That would be awesome!

Posted Oct 09, 2009 · 23:03 UTC#49

I finally got the chance to watch the videos and it looks great, functionality-wise! I cant wait to see it actually used in a vehicle! Any chance well be seeing the software downloadable anytime soon? Also have you been able to look into the interfacing options any further?

In for the BETA! =]

So, in response to a PM I got, I wrote this, figured I could post it for all to see. This is in reference to the videos I posted on here a page or so back in here...

I write software for a company that makes performance parts for cars. One of their products is an engine control unit that allows you to record engine data and change or "tune" engine settings as well. The software in the video is used to allow the AVIC units to connect to this tuning unit via the usb cable. The software then displays in realtime the data being recorded from the engine controller and also allows you to adjust settings on the fly. Our current software runs on a laptop you must carry with you in the car. I thought it'd be easier to use the software if it was on your GPS unit you already have with you.

You can't connect a usb port to an OBDII connector, so you need something to make the two talk to each other. So, at the moment, the AVIC connects to the cars OBDII connection through our own tuning unit. If there is some other hardware out there similar to ours, I wouldn't have a problem making this software work on it as well. Our tuning unit currently only works on the new turbo-charged BMWs (135i & 335i) and the Mazdaspeed6 (my car) and the Mazdaspeed3.

I live in PHX area (Mesa) if any are interested in seeing it working live. I have made more progress lately and am adding the knock retard sensing ability so you can see if you're engine's knocking due to too aggressive of a tune. I'll add ability to read/erase error codes soon.
