Awesome, I'm the first to post any U310BT questions I guess.

So I just got my AVIC U310BT in the mail and am looking at the harness and trying to figure out how to do a parking break bypass. I've looked at all the other bypass guides, and I don't see a "mute"/yellow and black wire on this. There are also no removable pins, so moving the wires will be mighty hard.

Any ideas? Is there a software way to do it? I'm really just interested in being able to use navigation while driving.

so you cant just put the green to the black wire ?

I haven't tried it. Everything I have read says that Pioneer has made it more difficult than that in new units.

Posted Jul 29, 2009 · 21:31 UTC#4

it seems like all the navigation units, not just pioneer, claim to have improved on older methods, like double pulse sensing pb bypasses and such but ill put my money on using an empty slot on the harness to bypass the u310.

i get mine in a month so im sure somebody will have figured it out by then. yay, i love online communities

The parking break in a car connects to the ground, this is how it completes the circuit.

To bypass the parking break sensor just ground the parking break wire to the body. Don't buy a bypass kit, don't wase your time with complicated wiring just ground it.

This is what i did for mine, and it works just fine.

Wiring the parking break directly to ground does not work on these models. I just tried it on my U310BT.

What did work was a simple relay bypass. $6 from Radioshack:

Just grounding the parking brake wire does work on the U310. Been a few weeks now for me, no issue.

Same here - I did this during installation of my U310 last week, and as far as I can tell it worked well all weekend.

Same here, just ground it.

I had to get a bit more creative, i reused the harness form my P5800 and made my own pin kind of that went right to ground, so its covert, cant tell its been bypassed.

Based on what I remember reading on pg9 in the instruction manual, the parking brake thing is so that the unit can ONLY function as navigation while the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off). Having a navigation system while the car is parked makes about as much sense as just having a paper map. Haha.

SO, that brings me to my next question.... If this unit doesn't play video, and is designed to have the navigation functional only while the vehicle is in motion, what features are NOT available while the parking brake isn't engaged...? the audio controls? I don't get it.

For those of you that have your devices installed and grounded the parking brake wire out, what features can you access while the car is in motion that you otherwise wouldn't be able to if installed correctly?

As with any in dash navigation systems, including OEM, you cannot search adresses, type them in, enter bluetooth contacts, pair phones, ect unless the vehicle is parked.

ah. I used to work for Acura and I was able to search/type addresses while moving but I never tried anything else.

Either way, if the solution is to just ground it, no big deal.

I can confirm that grounding it works. I just twisted the green parking brake wire into the wire nut that connects the ground wire from the hardness and the ground wire from the adapter.

The "Connections" section under "Settings" confirms that the parking brake is permanently on.

It works for now but as soon as your unit fully calibrates you will probably get locked out again. That has been the case in the past. Give it another 200 miles or so and then report back. This may be the correct bypass sense the 310 is actually a portable nav unit but I wouldn't bet on it.

Mine was grounded for over a month, well more than 200 miles. It works just fine. I drive about 60 miles round trip a day just for work alone. There is also no calibration option/settings on the U310, just a very simple deck for the price. It is not a portable nav either, there is no GPS antenna built into the detachable face. You can power it up independently to bring it in the house to hook up to avic feeds, or search addresses and plan routes in the house instead of sitting in the car.

Just pulled it out yesterday for a z110, which most definetly needs the relocation of the mute wire.

I grounded my unit and have driven about 100 miles since the install with no lockout. It permanently shows parking brake as "On" under Settings > Status. If you tried grounding yours and were unsuccessful in bypassing the lockout, you may want to double-check your wiring. You probably did this, but it wouldn't hurt to make sure you fully secured the tap on the green wire to ground and it's not loose. Use pliers.

I'd actually recommend that anyone doing the install ground the AVIC to the parking break ground wire instead of the one coming from the unit if you can get to it without too much hassle. It's less likely to come back to haunt you if you get sued after a wreck, since you can at least argue that you (improperly) connected it to the e-break.

I can also confirm that grounding the parking brake wire works.

I drive 110 miles a day, every day, and have had the unit installed for a few weeks now.

Sorry for my ignorance, but how do you ground the parking brake? Which wire to where?

It is the thin long wire on the wiring harness with a wiretap at the end.

Well, the simplest way to do the bypass is just to tap the ground wire running into the UB10BT itself. Do this by attaching the wire tap at the end of the light green wire to the black wire coming from the U310BT. Tighten the tap with pliers, and you're done. Bypass complete. This is probably what 95% of owners will do.

What I'm suggesting is that you actually run the light green wire to the parking brake, and attach it to the ground wire coming from the brake. The manual instructs you to attach the tap to the "power connector" wire of the ebrake; just attach it to the other wire (ground) and it will be bypassed. The ground wire will probably be black or white with a black stripe, but this varies by vehicle. (Check your manual.) This way, if you get in an accident, there's less likelihood that your bypass will be found (opening you up to a lawsuit), and you can claim that you at least tried to install it correctly in states where operation while bypassed is illegal.

The law varies by state; I posted a list below. Most state laws only pertain to video screens in the driver's line of sight, and in this respect the U310BT may be less of a legal problem to bypass. However, even if a bypass is legal in your state today, the law may change, you may move, or you may be pulled over in another state. Legal or not, none of this will protect you from a frivolous lawsuit claiming you were "distracted" during an accident. Wiring to the parking brake ground rather than the ground from the unit itself may offer some protection in that regard.

I am not a lawyer; this is not legal advice, just my opinion. Whichever way you decide to go, let us know if you have any problems and we can try to help.

EDIT: I don't know what laws are applicable in Europe, Canada, etc. I live in Florida, where my amateur reading of the law is that a bypass is perfectly legal, since the U310 doesn't display video and the law "does not prohibit the use of an electronic display used in conjunction with a vehicle navigation system."

Holy sh!t, somebody's AVIC is online and talking to us and nobody else caught this. pioneer just made these f#$%ers way too smart, next the machines will rise up against us, somebody better find and protect John Conner, he is our only hope.

LOL. I was trying to come up with a user name that I would remember for this site; I figured the AVIC model was as good as any when it came to a user name.

The wiring harness on my unit does not have a light green wire to ground...does any else not have a light green wire?

It is long thin light green wire and should be there as without connecting it to Handbrake terminal or ground, Unit would not allow you to use keypad at all. May be they mistakenly provided harness from Non-GPS unit, which also uses pretty much same harness, except for this wire.
