I can confirm the app works excellent (as expected) with Backgrounder.

Yes, PandoraLink is only for the X920 and Z120. However, you could still use the regular Pandora app and control it on the iPhone.

Nothing official at this point. My guess would be late summer.

One thing I am certain of is that it will be a while after the z120 hits retail, which it's only slowly started to do now. I agree with a "late summer" release myself although I have as bout as much idea as anyone else here - don't work for Pioneer.

Anyway this is the PandoraLink thread, not the 100th thread on when the z110 will be updated. I liked PandoraLink a lot, although I do wish the Play/Pause buttons were bigger - they are pretty tiny on the AVIC. Also, though it probably goes without saying, you do need to have the actual Pandora iPhone app and an account to use this, it's an addition to those, not a replacement for them.

Looks really nice and works as expected, I can hardly believe it. If a future update made the play/pause buttons bigger, and maybe gave you the ability to create new stations on the AVIC itself, it would be close to perfect.

I got the 120 installed today at a local shop it was $1199 installed.

PandoraLink is awesome. It works as advertised. It used the account I setup in the regular Pandora app. The app is free in itunes and I've got an older 3.0 (7A341) software and (04.26.08) firmware. No issues whatsoever. Go ahead and give Pandora some money if you guys use this...I think its worth the $30 a year to replace Sat radio.

One thing I noticed. I was replacing an old Z1 and the installer left the XM tuner with iPod (cd-ib100ii) adapter pass-through in the car. The new unit would only work on the older iPod adapter even though the USB was plugged in and my iPhone 3G was plugged in. I removed the older iPod adapter and connected the XM tuner straight to the HU and everything is happy now.

Next up, I'm going to see what I can put on my new 8GB SDHC card and play in the car :)

Life is good. This HU really is the shiznat.

How well does the iPhone stream Pandora thru the 3G network while you're mobile and your phone is switching cells?

Once the station loads, and assuming you don't skip any songs, it's seamless.

Everything depends on your local reception, that goes without saying. But Pandora, whether with the native iPhone app or this one, does an excellent job of pre-caching songs and other trickery. I listen to it every day on my 30 mile work commute (and now I get to do that with my HU!) and it's a rare day when a song skips. Sometimes a song will take a few seconds longer to load, that's about it. And this is with HQ audio enabled.

They did a really, really good job with Pandora on the iPhone and PandoraLink continues that trend. Forget XM or Sirius, this is the bees knees right here.

No. As of now, the only way for pandora link to work is with the ipod dock connection.

to pioneer: Inquiry:I just purchased your AVIC-X920BT head unit and was wondering if it would be possible to hook up the unit to a Motorola Droid for the pandora link portion? I would really like to be able to use Pandora, but don't want to switch carriers. Thanks in advance.

response:

Thank you for contacting Pioneer Electronics, Inc.

As of right now the Pandora link app is only available for the iPhone.

Pioneer is planning on branching out to other phones but at this time it seems since the droid is so new it will be the last one to have it. They are working on the app for blackberry now.

Thank You,

The real trick is going to be how to control it. Do other smartphones have a dock that allows remote commands, etc to be passed? I don't mean "multimedia" docks, if it just passes audio like a lot of devices there's going to be no way for the Pandora app to work like it does for the iPhone.

The reason the iPhone gets all the cool integration is because of it's app store (which other devices have now) and well-documented dock API that allows commands to be sent and received from the device (which other devices don't have to my knowledge). I know the Droid has a dock, but it's more or less straight usb - you can transfer files over it, and charge it, but I don't know if there is a robust way to transfer commands back and forth over it. I know you could technically do so over USB but it's whether the phone OS supports it that matters. I'm sure Pioneer is trying to figure out the same thing.

that was my question too.....how would it be controlled.

Well here in norway we dont seem to get the Pandora or pandora link i have to have a US ip adress :(

Anyone updated to the new Pandora (not PandoraLink) on the iPhone yet? I don't want to do it if it breaks PandoraLink, but PandoraLink is kinda touchy right now so I wanted to try it out.

By touchy I mean it seems that about 1/3-1/4 of the time Pandora will connect, then throw up a message that the app is having trouble communicating with the iPhone or something. Then I have to unplug the iPhone and replug it. I'm using the stock Pioneer brand iPhone cable, the $50 one, and it works fine with regular iPhone playback, so I'm assuming it's a PandoraLink bug.

It can use bluetooth, Blackberries, WinMo phones, and Droid all FULLY use A2DP (Stero Bluetooth). I control play pause and skip all through my bluetooth headset, it even has caller ID.

Posted Jun 08, 2010 · 12:24 UTC#21

That's not AD2P that does that. That's AVRCP, the remote profile. In order to do what it would need to do for this it'd need to support AVRCP 1.3/1.4 at a minimum, which includes advanced metadata and playlist support. The Pioneer only supports 1.0 - that gives you your play/pause/etc over Bluetooth but not much else. Also I believe Android is only AVRCP 1.0 as well. AVRCP beyond 1.0 is pretty cutting edge right now.

Bottom line is, both devices will need to support AVRCP 1.3 at a bare minimum, 1.4 if you want playlist support, and also BIP (Basic Image Profile) for album art support, in order for PandoraLink and other functions to work like they do for the iPod. I'm not saying it's impossible, far from it, but given Pioneer's track record I find it unlikely. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE it if, for example, Android had the same media support the iPhone does....but I'm not holding my breath.

You certainly wont see any updates to the BT profile of the unit to add any of this. That would be a feature addition and that wont happen until the next unit, if then.

I'm assuming that the PL only works with an Iphone plugged in, and not via BT....

In regard to that.... has anyone tried PL with the "Music Controls" jailbreak app, to see if you can still control it via the head unit? That would be kewl if it did....

I think you can also bluetooth pandora though the X920BT. But I dont think doing it that way will allow you controls on the navi to work.

You can also use the pandora port to run slacker radio too. But again, you loose onscreen thumbs up and down on the navi.

Overall, Im not happy with Pandora. It seems like they play the same songs over and over and over again no matter how many channels you have. It also throws some odd songs into custom channels. For example, I have a Lil Wayne station and its playing Clearance clearwater whatever the hell they are called. As well as some rolling stone songs...

I wish slacker or the iphone jailbreak community would relase a app that would allow us to use the pandora port on our navi to run slacker. I dont care about it saying pandora. I just want to run slacker though my navi and have thumbs up or down ability.

I seriously doubt any phone app could do that without a specific interface for it on the unit.
