This seems to have been tried by others - from what I can tell, AVIC feeds (whatever they really buy you) run/can be updated via Bluetooth. I'm no AVIC Feeds kinda guy - so I'm not getting (understanding) that add on.

We did try (others have also) to connect via the iPod cable - and you get the standard 'incompatible' Z110/iPad statement.

We did find that at least (which is not bad) - you can connect nicely via Bluetooth audio. This allows very good sound quality. The negative side is the sound via iTunes is *clearly* not Dolby (any version of surround). I think it is really not all that bad on some video - but generally, not close to a real digital source. At least you still have the large screen - so I guess a real 'iPad' connection is not that big an issue.

So Bluetooth - fine. You can stream Youtube (via Bluetoth audio using the iPad as a screen) - but real integration just does not exist.....

Wish Pioneer moved this more into the main stream - at least then they'd get real support (software), and likely a hugely marketable following...

That's my $.02.....

I'm confused. Are you trying to get high quality music and youtube to play on the AVIC? Do you have the right cable? The CD-IU50V?

The AVIC pulls the raw audio straight from the iPod, so whatever quality the source is, that's what you get.

If you're trying to get youtube on the AVIC, put the AVIC in video mode, and then launch youtube, it will send the video and audio to the AVIC.

Yes - but we are talking iPad not iPod - it's just way to confusing - they look identical when you glance... iPad has no real support as you know... :-(

Pioneer has nothing to do with this as this unit has been out for a year now. The iPad has been out for two months.

Oh wow, yeah, I feel stupid now...

Thats because at this point Apple does not intend for the iPad to have external unit remote control through the dock connector as the iPod does.

If they were at all concerned, they could have gotten pre-release software (that doesn't even need an iPad to run) over a year ago. I believe there were even hardware 'samples' available to some. If you as a company think this is important, I'm just surprised there wasn't an effort - or maybe there was (???).

Hindsight says it isn't a major issue since you can run Bluetooth, and the screen is larger than the AVIC. That said, it's a tech thing that helps to move and establish a brand...

I can't imagine we are talking about anything short of a small dev effort (I've done a decent number of SW dev efforts in the Linux and Win communities)...

Jason - no dig at all intended - I keep searching for things for this iPad thing - and there is so far quite little...

Apple's intentions are thankfully not really what will happen in the real world. I can thank my ability to record videos on my iPhone (3G) for the last few years to that...

Well until somebody can open up the dock connector protocol of the iPad things will remain the same.

Posted May 25, 2010 · 04:19 UTC#10

The Z110 has been out for like a year, which means it was designed 12-18 months before that. Hard to expect it to work with something that was top secret until a few months ago and doesn't mount in a car easily or fit in a glove box. Hacks will come I am sure, but not until more people that give a crap can afford an ipad

The connector protocol is documented quite well. http://courses.cit.cornell.edu/ee476/Fi ... index.html has an example of a college project to analyze it.

It is in the Internet world. Why do you keep running random statements at me?

Posted May 25, 2010 · 04:34 UTC#12

Well that looks like the hardware info. Im referring to the software protocol. And as soon as you start making intelligent statements I wont feel the need to respond.

Now moving way off topic - the iPad and iPhone share most code. While had Pioneer gotten ++ with Apple (which Pioneer could have done), it didn't. The code has been there for the asking from Apple (to real firms such as Pioneer). It's been there for almost 2 yrs...

The external unit remote control protocol of the dock connector is not available for the iPad. Contrary to popular belief, the iPad is not exactly and big iPod Touch. In certain areas of the device, the software is restricted. Like that of the software that controls the dock connector of the iPad. This is now the second time I have had to explain that to you.

I thought I have been making intelligent statements - and yours such as viewtopic.php?f=15&t=32676 this thread show a very clear picture.

As this forum is now very moderated and censored - I'm guessing you won't leave that link here - but who knows....

Jailbreak it and use Music Controls... sweet app... backgrounds the majority of the most popular radio apps, and shuts down IPod like it should(not real sure why Apple decided to background IPod(even if you pause the music)it's always running, sucking battery...until you reboot and/or jailbreak it and use 3rd party task managers<---Kirakae

And yes, for whatever reason IPod app sounds like hell over BT(no matter what head unit)..... Whereas other radio apps(Pandora, iheartradio...AOL radio) sound pretty awesome.... Someone should write Apple about that...

Posted May 25, 2010 · 15:54 UTC#18

As for sound - I think iPad is not bad for general music - but on videos (DVD cut downs, iTunes 'movies') - the sound is not great at all... I'll have to try music again - maybe (likely) my memory is faulty. I thought Bluetooth was great sound...

Whatever you may think of VBlue's statements in other threads he's not being a jerk to you in this one. He explained the issue, but the answer wasn't what you were looking for so you kept ignoring it, even I can see that. Allow me to try:

There is no possible way Pioneer could have designed any part of their software 2+ years ago with the iPad in mind. Putting any kind of blame on them for this "problem" is just silly. Pioneer makes lots of stupid or otherwise incomprehensible design decisions but this isn't one of them. In any case, even if they did have access to the iPad, they still couldn't of gotten it to work like you want because:

The dock connector on the iPad does not work the same way as the dock connector on the iPod/iPhones. Hardware wise it's the same 30 pin connector they all use. Software wise the iPad does not allow remote control functions to be passed like they are for the iPhone/iPod. This is because Apple does not see the iPad as a device that should be used in that manner. You can rant about this decision all you like, plenty of people do, but it doesn't change the reality of the situation.

If someone "jailbreaks" the iPad one day (and plenty of people are trying to) then it's technically possible to hack around this limitation, assuming anyone wants to bother. That's neither here nor there because it's a certainty that Pioneer won't have anything to do with it, nor should they.

The iPad is not just a large iTouch. It is not just a large iPhone. There are several differences other than the screen size between them and this is one of them. Deal with it, because like it or not that's how Apple made it. And redirect your anger at Pioneer to something more constructive, such as why they left out auto-complete in their Nav again.

Vblue42 explained all of this but hopefully now that you are reading it from someone else it will get through.

Also I'm pretty sure he doesn't work for Pioneer and this isn't an official Pioneer forum, I only say that because a couple of things you wrote makes me think you believe both to be true.

Very well said Ixian.

Posted May 26, 2010 · 17:04 UTC#21

So - the response from Customer service today stated the iPad should work via iPod cable (???). I'm following up with them further. They do show iPad is supported for AVIC Feeds on the Pioneer website.

We'll see what they come back with...

Posted May 26, 2010 · 17:25 UTC#22

Thats different. AVIC FEEDS doesn't work through the dock connector.

Posted May 26, 2010 · 17:51 UTC#23

Exactly.

Possibly I was not clear. Pioneer stated the iPad should work via the iPod connection.

Separately, I found it is currently supported via Bluetooth (Avic Feeds).

These are two separate things (direct connect support vs Bluetooth)

Posted May 26, 2010 · 18:03 UTC#24

Its not going to work from the dock connector. Pioneer is assuming it will as it does the iPod.

Posted May 26, 2010 · 20:41 UTC#25

I talked with Pioneer today - offered up my iPad (they must be in the OC office) - at least they said they are getting one for testing, and would not need mine... I'll post when/if something comes of it...

In the mean time, there are others who have remotely connected an iPad to an iPhone 3G via miwi - then able to stream and control through that connection (possibly promising)...
