Hello everyone. I tried doing a search but couldn't find my issue listed in the forums so I thought I'd ask. I just got a Z1 installed in my car over the weekend, and when the vehicle is at a complete stop the system seems to think I'm still traveling. My little GPS pointer keeps moving (albeit somewhat slowly), then when I start moving again the pointer snaps right back to where it needs to be. Is this normal behavior?
"Floating" character on Map view of AVIC-Z1?
there is a learning time period, and that may be normal. but you should find out where the ant. was placed as an incorrect placement can cause that.
Thanks for the reply - I had a feeling that there was probably some break-in period. Actually, after having it for only 2 days it seems to be a little bit less "floaty" than before.
As far as the GPS antenna is concerned, the installer placed it in the center front of the dash, all the way to the front. Is that a good spot?
its probably the "better" of good better best. as long as no break in the line of sight, and no metal especially, you should be just fine.
also watch out for metallic tints in your cars... they can mess with the GPS pretty bad
Hard to have a break in a line of sight for a GPS antenna; GPS is a lot different than XM or sirius. With 30 satellites, it is almost impossible to be in a clear area and not lock onto at least 6 sats. Some car manufacturers install the GPS antenna under the plastic dash panel toward the center (Hummers for example). That is exactly where I installed mine, and I receive a constant 6-7 sats, unless in a canyon situation or around a downtown district with sky scrapers.
the "break" was meant as in mirror, radar detector, or other obstruction... namely metal or metallic tint as rodge said. Some people mount radar detectors low center in the dash for visibility, hence the broad "break" comment.
Any idea how long this break-in period should be? I've had the unit for 6 days now and the GPS still thinks I'm moving when I'm completely stopped. This totally messes up the navigation system when trying to do a route because it will think I'm going down a wrong road then will start to re-calculate.
This could be completely off the mark, but could the vss wire be hooked up to a tachometer sensor by mistake? I'm trying to figure out myself which wire to connect the vss lead to in my 2000 Pathfinder (if any one knows....) and I seem to remember there being a wire that senses engine speed on the electrical diagram. I don't know how similar/different the signals are, but if the Z1 were getting a signal from this wire, wouldn't it think that the vehicle was moving even though it was idling (since the engine isn't stopped)?
I guess if that is the case, then you could try stopping the engine and see if the drift stops. If it does, then that's likely the problem.

I like Action's idea. Check the speed sense wire. I think it's in
MENU - SETTINGS - HARDWARE - CONNECTION STATUS.
Look at the speed setting (on the top line) while you are not moving. Is it 0? Is it something other than 0?
If its larger than 0 and you are stopped then it's not connected to the VSS wire in your vehicle... possibly the tach, but it could be anything.
If it's 0 while you are not moving, then try driving around a bit, does it go up and down with speed? Is it always 0?
If it looks like it's right then the only other thing causing issues with movement is the GPS antenna thinking it's somewhere else due to poor signal strength. Try moving the antenna to the roof and see if that helps.
action and ducatiboy, thanks for your suggestions.
When the ignition is off, the key is in Accessory, and the car is in park, the speed pulse in Connection Status and the speed listed in 3D Calibration Status is 0.
When I turn the ignition on but still stay in park, the Speed Pulse in Connection Status is going back and forth between 8 and 9. The speed listed under 3D Calibration Status is 21mph.
What should I have the installer check for in this case? I also had the installer do the bypass (which seems to be working correctly). Could that be causing an issue?
the bypass shouldnt be the problem. maybe try NOT connecting the vss and see where its at

It sounds like either your vss wire is incorrectly hooked up, you have a faulty Z1, or your vehicle's speed sensor is sending out some wierdo signal (I'd bet on #1)
. If it is, in fact, connected to the tach, try revving your engine (while in park) and see if the value goes up. Also you could try ducatiboy's suggestion of checking it while you are driving. If it doesn't change then maybe it's connected to some other wire (that sends a pulse). I don't know what it should read since I don't have mine hooked up yet. ![]()
I think the bottom line is that you should tell your installer to double check his wiring diagram to make sure he connected it to the right place.

To answer your question vss for a 2000 pathfinder is the same as an 02

second page my first post on that page.

action, I did actually drive the car around the block while I checked those speeds. The speeds did increase and decrease along with my driving, but always had a minimum speed when I was parked or stopped.
I'll complain to my installer about this and have him check the VSS wiring. Thanks again everyone.

Thanks for the tip cntrylvr79, vss is up and pulsing. However, do you have any more info on the reverse sensor wire? I didn't see any light yellow and the yellow that I did see seemed to go back into the cruise control unit. That can't be right, can it?
vss is up and pulsing.
So does that mean that your icon on the map is not floating around when standing still? I don't have any info for the reverse wire except that I tapped mine off the actual power going to a reverse light bulb. I'm betting I could have found something in the dash, but I was running power and video cables back there for the camera anyway, I just ran the reverse sense wire to the bulb itself.

It wasn't me that was having the floating icon, it was fcapizzo
. I may do that anyway, since I'll have to run the power and video cables for the camera back there as well. I was hoping to kill two birds with one stone while I was doing the vss. I'm still looking/pondering for a rear camera. I'm leaning towards a license plate one, since it'll be easier to install "cleanly".
"Last" project: Disassemble an Xbox, replace the hard drive, hide the Xbox somewhere (under the seat or something) and connect it to the AVIC. Camping will never be the same! ![]()
Yah, sorry, got confused....

I wanted to do that... There was talk about replacing the stock AC/DC power supply with a smaller and more useful DC/DC power supply so that it would be more "install in the car" friendly. That would be a sweet setup. I have been meaning to do that, but never got around to it. I don't even know if they ever did come out with a DC replacement power supply for the xbox.
With a big enough hard drive you could have 50 games and 50 movies on there at your fingertips. What a way to camp! ![]()
50? only 50 and 50. hehehe, I had a very large website dedicated to xbox stuff and you can do so much more with an xbox then most people think. put a media center on there so that you can store your movie, and games and music and and and... it goes on and on. you can have safely 250 gigs, after that things start to get funny with corruption. you can have larger though. I personally have over 500 games and dozens of movies that goes back and forth from my pc to xbox, and when you stream its even more. they make power supplies that will just plug right in so you dont have to do an dc/ac/dc conversion.

It was just a random number I pulled out that you can easily stick on there. I have lost count of the stuff I have for the original xbox. Actually my "stuff" for the 360 is rapidly growing as well ![]()

Yah, I love that program. Most people are amazed at it, especially 2.01 or whatever it's up to these days... very nice. And if you get the "fat" builds there are lots of nifty add ons which are slick.

I've had a 400G in the 2 of mine for at least a year or so, back when the 400g was the absolutely biggest hard drive you could buy (at a way exorbitant price). Isn't the new code for the X3 chips a fix for that problem? I thought that used to be an issue but I thought it was fixed some how, but I don't remember how.

Where? I do remember that somewhere, but I haven't seen anything lately and that would be a great idea. I have been wanting to do this as well but the Dc to Ac to Dc seems silly.
Either that or I'm going to mount my Wii in the truck. Nothing like swinging that controller around wildly while driving ![]()
I forget where, but bet jamco or similar has something. its a standard pc power supply, just check the pin outs if it concerns you.
I know you pulled that number cuz it was easy, I just mentioned that its nearly endless what you can do with the first xbox. I got two meritline cases that hold 250 disks each full and i still have to find space for 40+ more. I dont see a need anymore to store nearly 2 terabytes of xbox games.
The x3 didnt and really cant fix the issue with larger drives. Its something with lba, in fact there has been bios's released to correct the problem and they still come up short. really the only way you can put a drive larger then 250 gigs (I hope yours is this way) is that you dont set any partition to be larger then 250 gigs, that means, you go on to having a g drive and even an h if necessary, but it would probably be better to go and set up drives for certain types of games such as "sports" and "rpg" and so on, then you could separate the 2 or more drives easily. The reason people dont see a problem is because they rarely actually get the entire partition full, meaning if you only used 240 gigs of a 300 and something gig partition you wont see a problem.

Nope, one big F drive. I thought I saw something about that being fixed which is why I upgraded mine. Been using them very extensively for at least a year with no issues. Maybe I'm lucky.

I don't know how full it is but it's at least 200-300 gigs full, maybe I won't have a problem till I fill it.
you will be fine until its filled past 247 i think, x3 couldnt change that unfortunately
