From what I've heard you can install Android on damn near anything, and I figure if they could get Windows CE on it, I bet we can put Android OS 3.0 honeycomb on it, then change the bluetooth stack and use google maps and install ALLLLL the apps you want including the Torque app so I can display my ODB2 output on my avic from my bluetooth odb2. I'm excited about this and know a bit about unix, anyone know where to begin?

Good luck.

Yup! Just like any OS, the lowest level that you have to master before any application is the hardware layer and its related drivers. The only thing that is known from the AVIC at this time is its ARM CPU at this time.

Well that sucks, they wont divulge anything more?

Even if you open the AVIC and look at the PCB and register audio chip, GPS dice, modem etc, you still need drivers for Android. Even if you got drivers, you still have to know what memory space has been reserved by the ARM CPU, if there is no automatic hardware detection built in the drivers.

So I would say this: forget it!

Im highly tempted to agree with you. Here's another Idea, buy a tablet PC and install it in my car where the pioneer was. Then figure out how to run the 3.5mm jack into the amplifier. Then I have wifi to tether from my phone and bluetooth for all my peripherals.

Great find man! You're going to be able to run Microsoft Street and Trip, or Google maps!

Yeah.. the marginal M/S S&T. See the video of the dude in Dubai or someplace running the iPad and his phone? That, was awesome, but also for another forum.

If anyone has one they wish to donate I wouldn't mind devoting the time to do this. Specifically looking at enumerating the devices and creating Honeycomb specific drivers, as far as the apps not sure if I would go that far at this point. Like to have 3.0 or 3.1 ported but am curious to see if it would be in vain until 4.0 came out.

I was thinking about updating BT to allow a BT interface for network connection sharing of smartphones if supported; maybe caching google maps as they are downloaded and referencing them locally BUT can see issues with it if it doesnt have a network connection for live traffic in the such.

The touchscreen would be a bit tricky but unfortunately I am actively using mine in my 4Runner so if anyone has one that is bricked or just sitting around collecting dust and would like to donate (I'd pay for shipping) please let me know.

Well I'm not sure if you'd get any donations being as you only have one post and nothing to show off yet but if you start to develope this I wouldn't mind being used as a tester for you...

Ah I see and could understand that! :)

Right now I am working on a few concepts and hopefully can produce something fruitful. This would need a custom UI and I think that some expectations may not be realistic.

The device is an Arm1136JF - 600 ~ 650Mhz (if overclocked you may squeeze 700Mhz) with 256MB RAM, 2GB Flash disk and of course various components that would be nice if you could programmatically produce compatible driver interfaces.

So far I am leaning towards the bootloader and system partition being on the Flash disk and the User Data on an SD Card which MUST stay in. Trying to balance this as a personal curiosity project between work and the family but the hardware "seems" sound enough to run albeit slowly.

I thought I saw a unit at Best Buy in Tampa behind the counter for like $150 and was tempted to get it.

I would be willing to make a donation and am sure others would, if you could show some sort of progress of a working port on the Avic!

Yeah, I guess I'd be willing to donate also if I could see something as far as your work.

There's a comms port and an additional USB port on the board FWIW, also, you're biggest issue is going to be making the radio talk nice with the mainboard. As far as I can tell, the GPS is your typical sirfstar II on a comms port, I think comm 2.

I am a computer engineer, and I have wrote lots of low level code for proprietary hardware. I'll tell you this.. it is not even worth it. If you want better functionality out of a car stereo like Android provides, go with a headunit that already comes with it. There are a few on the market. Or, go with a CarPC. They're much easier to setup and customize. If I were to attempt to code for the F700bt, it would take months.. or a team of people months. Hardly worth it. It probably wouldn't even run smooth on the outdated ARM processor.

I'm of the same advise, since you would have to recode all the low-level drivers, ALMOST as much as what the folks at Pioneer have done to the WinCE 5.0 to bring the AVIC to the market!

I would be too if it meant we could pimp our units :)

I've only had mine installed for ONE day (long story) but I can see lots of improvements I would like :)

first posting here after long time but have to say that Android requires 1GHZ processor and minimum 512 ram to work properly.so this "android" going on the avic is really out of the question

In what world is that? Maybe Honeycomb has those requirements but 2.1/2.2 etc don't.

Case in point: HTC Hero

528MHz

256MB RAM (133MB available for user storage)

Samsung Moment:

800MHz

512MB (253 available for user)

And those arent' the only ones below 1GHz. Let's not forget items like the Archos 5 and Nook Color.

Driver (lack of) support is the issue. Personally, I'd love to see webOS ported to it. Now THAT would make an incredible car system.

sorry to burst your bubble but WebOS will likely die now that HP has discontinued their systems

Tell me about it. Never had a cell phone for longer than 10 months. I've had this one since July '09. Over 2yrs! It'd be nice if they do manage to shop the OS license to HTC or Samsung though...

I admit though, I really am looking forward to placing that order on the Motorola Photon.... ;)

No offence but the avic like mine f910bt has only a 500mhz(Sirf Titan processor used specially for navigation not for anything else like video playback) and 256mb of ram did you know that? is so slow that is only play 640x400 divx files and still is choppy do not compare this "Titan" processor with the Qualcomm ones .we are now in 2011 almost 2012 who would like to use an obsolete Operating System . not even the ios 3 isn't good anymode barelly the andoid 2.1 or 2.2

Did not said that i would not love to have my unit work faster than it does but that's it! i cant do anything about it

I choose Pioneer for the Sound Quality and that it has igo8 (thought that it would play better the video files)pitty the display
