what do you guys think ?

Interesting, I'm usually the first to hear of such things.
It's long been hinted that we would see a new generation of units for 2012.
We probably won't know anything official until Pioneer's Summer Road Show.
It is using the api's that have been built into IOS for some time now that allow another unit to take full control of the iOS device; essentially transferring the touch screen control and all app access to the resulting unit. This has been baked into iOS for a few revisions but it has not been used or talked about too much. I am happy to see Pioneer being first to the game. This will be revolutionary in the car audio game.
Although the 2012 units form the three biggest head unit manufactures will offer a completely new concept of how future units will work, I believe what you see in this article is complete vapor ware. Companies never allow this kind of revolutionary concept to leak like this. I wouldn't be surprise if this was completely false. The 2012 units from Pioneer, Kenwood , and Alpine will likely run some version of Android OS but I don't believe this is it.
Crap, i like this allot if it comes to fruition. Now i will have to upgrade once again!!
Vaporware? hah!
Let's just say... this week might be very interesting. Stay tuned.
It will be interesting then.
well pioneer has a placeholder on their site with a countdown. so i guess we will see.
"Get Yours Junes 22, 2011"
Actually, this link seems to have more detail, but looks like the press release or something official:
Looks pretty good. Wont compare with my in-dash iPad instal but likely pretty damn close.
Just got a new Z130BT. Thinking about returning it and waiting for the new head unit that comes out on 6/22/11 with iphone integration. It's seems to have the same functionality with much greater potential. I guess there's no way they would do a software update for the existing Z130s that offer the same touch screen control of the iphone??
Thoughts on what to do???
Thanks
Not impressed BTW

That is my question as well. Does anyone know if this Pioneer AppRadio for Iphone will work the same way with the Z110/120 in “Ipod video mode†and the Z130 in “app modeâ€??
It's basically app mode with touch screen controls being passed to the iPhone.
As far as I know, there is no actual GPS in the unit, it depends on the iPhone to navigate. That may be a big drawback for some.

Im not either. It requires a "Pioneer" app in order to work so that means it wont work worth a crap. Maybe by the third generation.

Yep....the old question stands...what happens to your route when you hit a dead zone or are in a very remote area like the mountains where cell phone service is non-existant?
Since I don't have a Z130BT, how do you control the apps with the Z130BT if there are no touch screen controls being sent back to the iPhone? Personally, I'd like to get the Z130BT over the AppRadio since it has a built in GPS in addition to the apps but if I cannot control the apps from the screen, it sounds like a clunky interface. Do you need to control the apps from the phone itself?
Thanks.
You don't control any apps with the Z or any other unit except this new unit. App Mode on the Z is merely an easy to view the video from video capable apps on the phone.
What about a DVD player? I'm sticking with the Z120bt.There is not always an internet conection everywere you travel. It looks cool and for $500 not bad.

Thanks. It sounds to me like they need an AppRadio with a built in GPS for those times when you have no cell signal. Seems impractical to reply just on your phone for service. Maybe down the road.
Capacitive touchscreen?
Sounds good at first in regards to responsiveness and such, but I don't want to have to remove my gloves when it's 10 degrees outside and I want to get my radio doing what I want at the start of my drive.

I was thinking the same thing> I will remove my pioneer 930bt and install this unit, I personally never played any cd's or dvd's . But according to this article the init will come with a gps antenna, so I guess it will work in conjuction with motion-x gps. but we will see LOL
"Rumors regarding Pioneer's AppRadio hit the web last month, promising unparalleled iDevice integration for our automobiles. Pioneer has finally unleashed the double-DIN device, and it's everything we thought it would be -- namely a big car stereo that plays nice with iOS. There's an 800 x 400 6.1-inch multitouch capacitive display, Bluetooth connectivity, and it teams up with your iPhone or iPod touch (running iOS 4.2) via a 30-pin connector and Pioneer's AppRadio app. There's also an external mic and GPS antenna, full iPod music control and Google Maps integration, and specially formatted apps from Rdio and Pandora. Pioneer suggests a price "below $500" when it goes on sale June 22nd. We're going hands-on with the new stereo as we speak, so peruse the PR after the break and stay tuned for pics and impressions. "
Actually, this article claims that the AppRadio has a built in AM/FM radio along with a GPS receiver for when the iPhone is out of service range. So, does it run it's own GPS or MotionX-Drive's maps off of the iPhone using the head units receiver? I would think the latter but would still prefer an internal independant non-iPhone GPS version as a back up but maybe that's just me.

According to the article it has no internal maps. It uses the iPhone's maps. And for those of you that don't know, you don't need cell service to use the GPS apps on the iPhone. It has a dedicated GPS receiver.
