Looks like Apple Files for "CarPlay" Trademark in the US and Europe
Looks like Apple Files for "CarPlay" Trademark in the US and Europe
I'm surprised they hadn't done that ages ago. Usually we hear of stuff like this prior to the launch of the product. For example we learned recently that apple just filed to have the trademark of the name iTime. No watch has been announced yet. Carplay has been.
The article says there was a problem in that another company already had trademarked the CarPlay name. Maybe this just means that Apple has worked out the problem and can now file for ownership.

According to the article there is a chance that company was just a shell company so apple could make sure the trademarks were secured without revealing to the world that carplay was going to be the real name prior to the announcement.
That coupled with this:

Still has me thinking iOS 8 which should be released early September. All signs point to Apple not wanting to roll this out just yet.
Look for the CarPlay update Tuesday morning, Aug 5th. Just a guess of course, but looking at recent events, it makes sense.

Come Wednesday I plan on asking you what's up the delay. ![]()

I think he is referring to the tweet from Pioneer UK and the filing of the carplay trademark by apple.
Tuesday is the day Apple usually chooses for launching updated software.

I am attempting to interject a little humor here, nothing more. Too much tension concerning the update.
But, I will give my analysis, none the less.
Apple will not wait for iOS 8 before approving devices for CarPlay. With the new phones coming out along with iOS 8 and the new kits (HealthKit, CloudKit etc) Apple will not want to bring attention to rolling out CarPlay so late. After all, it was announced over 16 months ago.
Apple tends to tidy things up right before a feature goes live. The trademark registration of CarPlay a couple days ago would fall into that category.
Apple releases new products on Tuesdays, most of the time.
Pretty familiar apple, not happy but familiar. I just wanted to see what you were going to say,
I was hoping it was some concocted story that was a good morning laugh. ![]()
There is another beta build of iOS 8 expected this week. The final GM will be in about a months time. If there were any changes to Carplay during tested that would have to be pushed in a software update to iOS 7. Could that happen in the interim? Sure. Just not sure about the likelihood.
I'd be very happy about getting Carplay today, but I just don't see it happening with iOS 7.
CarPlay is working fine on iOS7 . . . II really don't think this is the issue.

Where have you seen this running publicly?
New york auto show, you could "play" with it on what I think was a sonata.

Based on the beta release notes there have been no significant changes between iOS 7 and 8 in the context of Carplay.
That may be, but is any testing even being done as part of a public beta for Carplay at all? Bottom line is no one has it outside of manufacturers. There could be fixes coming to maps, or other apps that are part of Carplay that could negatively affect the launch.
There is a very short window between now and the launch of iOS 8. Another few weeks does not seem like that long of time for Apple to hold off.

The majority of iOS's user base won't even touch iOS in the car till years from now anyways. Aftermarket radios are not the norm and people don't upgrade their cars that often. Apple has no reason to hold off carplay for iOS 8 because users won't really see carplay till well into iOS 9 or 10 anyways.

Carplay has been in your phone since iOS 7.1. It will work with your head unit the day pioneer releases the updated firmware, and you install that firmware in your head unit.
It will work if anyone releases it publicly. It may not ultimately work the way Apple wants it to work. The hold ups could be related to software, trademark issues or agreements with other manufacturers. All we can be pretty site of is that Apple has reasons for holding the release.

Christ knows what it really is that is holding things up. In the end it will get here when it gets here.
Think i will put on some Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers,
"The waiting is the hardest part"
Should be carplays theme song.

Good thing there was no money on the line! I'm predicting two Tuesdays from now but maybe seven.
