Hey everyone, I wanted to start a consolidated thread of all the common issues people are having with the Carplay update.  My issues so far:

1: Loud POP through speakers when powering off car or removing faceplate

2: Audio quality of voice calls is terrible compared to Bluetooth

3: Head unit will randomly freeze & restart itself

4: Spotify app is mostly useless, unable to search or navigate "back" to previous menus

5: Other 3rd party apps such as iHeartradio & Stitcher not showing up at all

I feel like I'm missing a couple other smaller ones, will list them once I remember.

#5 isn't a bug... Those apps just haven't been updated to support CarPlay yet.

For me, the biggest issues are the loud POP when I turn my car off, and the complete loss of Spotify functionality.

can we all please call pioneer.  we know there isn't a solution but if they get enough calls, im sure they will push an update sooner

#6 (confirmed by only me at this point I think) - Unable to access music playlists that are stored / organized in folders.  The folders appear but when you tap on one to see the playlists stored inside it does nothing.

I sent an email to Pioneer and quickly got a response back from them saying this was not their issue.  Whether or not that is actually true...

And I believe I have run into #3 a few times as well.  I will typically be using either Maps or Music and it will crash out of CarPlay and back to the "normal" NEX UI.  It also temporarily makes my USB port unavailable.  I usually have to plug my phone in a few times before it snaps back to life.  Does that sound like what others are seeing?

You have to remember issues with CarPlay is Apple's domain as the UI an features for the most part can change via an iOS update. I have taken the liberty to file bugs with Apple (I am an app dev) in their dev portal. I suggest anyone that can do the same as that will help the usability issues get resolved and show that people are using the feature.

Here are my open radars for the bugs:

CarPlay Album Artwork Too Dim

CarPlay Requires Unlock On Plugin

CarPlay Message Display

CarPlay Maps View Unusable

add when carplay is active bluetooth is disable or somehow it use in conjuntion with carplay.

And add the mic not working at all nor can I hear people when on a phone call. The weird part is siri will still activate when I say "Hey Siri." Brought my car to Best Buy and everything is installed properly. I'm not the only one with this issue and no one has found a fix yet. NEX 6000.

This makes me wonder if CarPlay is using the external mic at all, or if everything goes through the iPhone's mic (which might be obstructed by however it's mounted or attached in the vehicle).

No, it's using the external mic.   I was using it last night with the phone in the glove compartment.  No problems.

It uses the external mic as it always did, but the new "hey siri" feature uses the iPhone's internal mic.

Posted Oct 06, 2014 · 14:37 UTC#13

Ah, that might explain why when I use Hey Siri I'm not getting any response, but if I long-press the home button, Siri works fine.

That's Apple's bug as bass_rock mentions. The display and behavior is all on the phone. The head unit is simply responsible for displaying the video feed and sending input back to the phone (mic, touch, buttons, etc). I have folders of playlists too, but I can't reproduce your bug on 8.0.2, unfortunately. Have you tried rebooting the phone or force-quitting the Music app?

I can imagine both of these being punted in one way or another. The first seems by design, and the second is mostly by design as well (maybe a bad design, but intentional nonetheless). The defaults seem to be about giving you an overview, and even if you accept an auto-calculated route based on frequent trips or a calendar appt, it doesn't go into the "first person" view until you hit the details button, or tap "Guidance" when accepting the route. It'd make more sense if you could interact with POIs on the map in this mode.

The lack of contrast is a bit of a problem though.

I had 3 (lockup, reset) happen to me on the way home today - it took about 15 seconds after the lockup before the unit reset. I have also been having issues with Siri hearing/responding to my requests.

The #1 issue I have is when I go to listen to music through headphones after having used CarPlay, the volume on my phone is turned ALL the way up.  Happens every time.

Are you using headphones with a minijack connection or newer Lightening connection headphones?

Strange.  Yeah...I have rebooted and forced quit numerous times.  Even updated to the 8.1 beta and it still occurred.  I have not tried it with the second release of 8.1 yet but will tomorrow.

If this is true...I wonder what is different between your phone and mine (iPhone 5s)?  If yours are working there must be some secret sauce I can perform to get mine to work too.  Are your songs in your playlists local to your iPhone or are they in the cloud like mine are?  I don't have any physical music on my iPhone other than the songs that have been downloaded when streaming from the cloud.

Are you saying that you cannot switch to the Maps app in CarPlay and have it follow you along as you drive without specifying a destination? What is the current behavior when you to to Maps? Does it show your current location? Does it just sit there and not move? That seems kinda crazy.

Hey suri works for me when my phone is inside the glove box.  I dont see how it can not use the external mic.  It does however work only when not playing music.  I have to pause the music and then say hey suri.  It does not even work if its playing music at "normal" volume.

if you are in an area that has slow network or congested network or just plain ole crappy LTE, 3G, etc, then Siri will be sluggish, slow to respond and even seem locked up.

Minijack

Edited to add:

I contacted apple and the technician actually said "I got nothin'" lol

I have the NEX 8000 installed.   Before upgrading to carplay, I was able to watch video movies saved to my IPhone 5s.  Since the carplay upgrade, I can not get video to play at all, but can only hear the audio.  The HDMI heading no longer shows up on the NEX screen.   Is this function lost with the carplay upgrade.  Does anyone know if it's still possible to play movies from the iPhone after the carplay upgrade?

Thanks,

In smartphone settings have you tried setting it to the adapter instead of usb connection?

Thanks,

Since carplay uses lightning to usb1, and video has to be played via apple a/v adapter to hook up hdmi, you have to choose one or the other. If the lightning cable from the apple a/v adapter was more than charge only, then there is a possibility that you could choose carplay or hdmi, but as of now, it is either carplay or hdmi. I play movies from my iphhone with update. Streaming, ie. Hbogo and movies downloaded on phone.
