i already bought the D3, now im wondering if i should get Ipod Video or regular Ipod. Depends on how the quality is. As i know the ipod video screen is pretty small, so the video quality doesn't have to be good, but what happens when it enlarge to D3 screen with 6" monitor? anyone tried please give some input

Its pixelated but not terrible. I downloaded Wedding Crashers and it was only 700 mb, you may be able to get better quality than that

does ipod video comes with a converter program?

Posted Mar 09, 2007 · 00:37 UTC#4

The ipod doesn't come with any software... You download itunes for free and can manage your media through that app. As far as videos go... There are a few that will convert your movies (straight from DVD) to a set quality/size that you wish. I think I use Blaze Media Pro, and I have the 30GB video ipod. It works pretty good, and my files usually end up a bit larger than 700MB for a normal length film. As far as the D3 displaying them goes; I don't know yet. I have everything ready to go except for the D3 right now. Hopefully it will be here soon!!!

I use Videora to convert movies for my video ipod. Works pretty well.

If you have a Macintosh. You can use Roxio Popcorn. It will convert a DVD, AVI or Mpeg to a video ipod format.

or purchase a Vantec Avox for your mobile multimedia needs (for a fraction of the cost of the iPod with more storage!)

i've been doing video conversion for quiet a while, can i convert the movie into DivX format, put it in Ipod and act that as DivX video and play on the D3?

Posted Mar 09, 2007 · 05:20 UTC#9

no.. only videos that are in compatible format with video ipod would work. only way to play divx files are off cd/dvd

The iPod does not support the Divx format, it can only play H.264 or generic MPEG-4 encoded video. You can either reencode the video using any of the dozens of utilities available or try a special kind of tool called mp4ui, which basically rearranges the information in a divx/xvid file to match the mpeg-4 spec. I do video for a living, so I can get into a lot more detail if you wish. I'm also going to be getting my avic-d3 in the next couple of days, so I'll do a lot of testing then.

i'll look forward to ur testing, as i dont' really like the MP4 format, but im a big fan of DivX since it's smaller size and better quality.

Anyone could take a pic of the ipod video? if it doesn't look that great i might just buy a normal ipod just for song purpose

The podcast videos are decent. I'll take pics in the morning.

dumb question, what does pod cast do?

thats what i did :)

nice being able to have dvds on it as iso and vobs. i keep one or 2 movies uncompressed on it, and the rest are xvid and divx. this thing is a godsend

Pretty much every hard drive based iPod these days is an iPod video. Its the one to get even if you don't want video, since it'll store a lot more songs than the flash based iPods.

you said it.

It's a program that allows you to pick what you want to watch.. such as news, sports updates, mtv, etc...there's a lot to choose from. Some podcasts are only in audio, some are with video. All of the podcasts are clips, lasting from a couple minutes to an hour+. I never really have time to watch tv, so I just watch news and sports since they mainly focus on top headlines that are mostly updated daily.

Here's an example of the NBA video podcast. Quality is decent..

so is pod cast LIVE or u download them and watch?

Posted Mar 09, 2007 · 21:22 UTC#19

those quality look pretty decent to me, if the ipod video is that decent then im satisfy =)

Posted Mar 09, 2007 · 21:34 UTC#20

Podcasts are prerecorded. Think of them as a timer on your vcr/tivo. You "subscribe" to what you want to watch, and when the next episode becomes available, it automatically downloads.

Keep in mind that podcasts are usually much lower quality than what the ipod video supports. To give you an idea, all movies/videos you buy off iTunes have the resolution of 640x480 and 640x360. The equivalent of most podcasts would be half of that, 320x240 or 320x180. To compare, the resolution of DVD's is 720x480. Anyway, movies on an iPod should look bomb on the avic-d3, a lot better than podcasts.

Looks like i'm getting one today, i'll do a lot of testing over the weekend.

man that's very sweet, so anyone recommend getting a 30gb ipod video over other types of ipod?

Posted Mar 09, 2007 · 23:53 UTC#22

If you want to store alot of video, get the biggest one you can afford

The 30 gig video iPod is a bit thinner than the 80 gig ipod. And cheaper. Those are the advantages.

Posted Mar 12, 2007 · 14:59 UTC#24

But the new 80gb (5.5 gen) has a brighter screen along with better search options to find your files. Scrolling shows a letter overlay of the section your in, and an actual search function that auto-fills possibilities. Not to mention... it has 80 gigs of storage.

If you're getting an ipod mainly for the car (like me) it doesnt really matter how thick/thin it is. It also doesnt matter how its interface performs, since you'll be controlling it through the headunit.
