Hello yall. I need honest feedback from you D3 owners. I am looking to purchase a double din head unit that is capable of handling a variety of media especially in the video section.

How well does the D3 handle video as far as quality and readability issues. I could care less about the navigation features. Since I have over 300gigs of music videos, i would be looking to put some on a DVD as divx or mpeg 2, i.e. burning them a data dvd as opposed to authoring them. Would the D3 read them in that state? Does it support DVD+R DL?

Also, is it possible to have like an external hard drive hooked up to the "iBus" Direct Control? and read mp3s or videos in divx format. Please advice or if any one has another unit entirely in mind that handles a variety of formats and had a great video playback. Thanks.

Whty do so many people want to watch so much TV in their car these days? What ever happened to driving!?!

The under-$1000 MSRP brought all the hardrocks and ballers out from under the rocks. I read an article a few weeks ago in ME (Mobile Electronics) magazine where several installers noticed and made fun of this fact too.

To actually be helpful in my reply...yes, the D3 plays DIVX files. Since the navigation is on a DL DVD, I'm assuming that it will read a DVD+R DL. You could also put the videos on your ipod if you don't mind converting. Not sure about the harddrive, but it probably does work with the USB addon.

It does read DL DVD+R just fine.

No support with the CDI200 ("iBus" Direct Control) other then ipod.

Horrible support with the USB option, its not even listed as compatible.

Thank you for your input. Okay, now that I know it will read DVD+R DL media, how good is the video quality. No one here seems to talk about it. Is it crisp? Or it could be much more better. Better still, on a scale of 1-10 what would it score.

VBLUE42, thanks for your input also. You say the USB support is horrible. By horrible you mean? sluggish / counter-intuitive or its PITA to get it working. Please I need solid answer because you own it. 95% of Best Buy dudes don't know anything about tons of the products they sell.

What if I wasn't doing the driving. I could be an installer looking for feedback for a customer/friend. 8)

It's a 6.1 in screen with a resolution of ~500x240. I believe the iPod is 320x240, so the picture isnt going to be great. However, i think especially for avi/divx files, the picture will definitely be adequate. I dont have mine yet so i cant say for sure.

Ive read that the interface for usb items is horrible. very difficult to manage and access, not so much the actual install.

You don't have to defend yourself about viewing movies...who doesn't? if you cant multitask, dont watch movies.

Thanks for being more specific Ashhong. I am trying every means possible to be well informed on this unit before making a purchase. It seems that the mp3/ ipod feature is very adequate but the display might not be very promisiing.

Posted Jun 04, 2007 · 16:46 UTC#11

The display is pretty good with DVD. It's not so good with video from the iPod because it was meant for a small screen.

Necro, point very well taken. Not to stress you, but it would be great if you can upload a photo w/ the unit playing a video off the ipod. Reason is because you make it sound like the resolution becomes stretched playing on the unit and looking horrible afterwards.

Read this, I havnt personally used the USB option but I have used other options with pioneer head units before that only work as "external devices" (meaning the software interface to control it is very basic) and they always leave much to be desired.

Posted Jun 04, 2007 · 18:36 UTC#14

fatboy was furious off that usb product. Thanks VBLUE42. I will stay away from that junk.

I found something that would sort of serve my desire to use a USB HDD. The Vantec Avox. Its great and everyone seems to love it. :D

Posted Jun 04, 2007 · 19:06 UTC#15

Yea, seems to be a good product, just be aware there is no control from the D3. It apparently has a remote that controls it.

Posted Jun 04, 2007 · 19:57 UTC#16

Yes. I read about that. I guess that would have to be tolerable. But, overall its benefits outweighs that con.

Posted Jun 05, 2007 · 00:28 UTC#17

wooooooooooot. lol  I branched into an automobile store while waiting on my tires hoping to check out some Double Din head units and lo and behold, I saw the D3. It had been bypassed in the store so I decided to test some of my dvd media files on it. It did not read my DVD-R which had my divx music videos...I was immediately saddened. I tried it on the next Kenwood unit...It played it smoothly. The video was as crisp as my LCD TV. I decided to give the D3 another chance and I popped in an authored music video dvd I made way back and it played. The video quality was alright. Not crisp and then I played it on the Kenwood unit and MY GOD! It was like HDTV compared to D3. I drew my conclusion immediately that the video playback quality on the D3 was not promising. It was indeed lacking . It played my mp3 just fine. I guess I will have to look else where. Preferably Kenwood.

Maybe if I get a mad deal for like $500 I'll compromise.

Posted Jun 05, 2007 · 00:41 UTC#18

Get the D3 yo. Fuck kenwood, have you read reviews on that piece of shit unit? It breaks too damn much, the D3 is way more reliable and will stand all the hard use, it can be used and abused. Try doing that to a kenwood and it will fuck up. I know this cause i learned the hard way 2 brand new kenwood units fucked up on me. Get the D3. Avoid all the bullshit. Pioneer is like the Toyota of Head units. Kenwood is like the ford of Head units. If you listen to that dumbass pussy about the kenwood, then good luck cause you'll need it.

Posted Jun 05, 2007 · 00:47 UTC#19

haha  YoungDru...wot units did you have and how did you suffer 2 losses ? U seem like an agressive dude. Maybe u handle electronics too rough. Wells, rough play is wot you do to ur partner not electronics.

Posted Jun 05, 2007 · 01:18 UTC#20

LOL, yeah, treat your units like the ladies, but don't try to stick your dick in the unit though. I had the DNX7100, the first time, it was shuttin' off when i turned it up too loud, when i re-wired it, it was fine, then my 13w7 banged too loud it made the cd skip, fucking cheap ass unit. then when it ejected the cd, it made this annoying ass sound, like it was broken or something. I took it back to the store, like 5 installers checked it and tested it, then concluded it was a defect, they gave me a new one, and they said they didn't trust me so they installed it, and it kept blowing the fuse, lol, dumb asses. the navi just didn't locate itself right, the sound sounded distorted at high volume, it would over heat if you turned it up too much, so i took it back once again and got the d3, this damn unit can handle some real abuse and sounds crisp at high volumes. FUCK kenwood!!!

Posted Jun 05, 2007 · 01:22 UTC#21

LMAO. Im guessing it was not sheer luck. But you had the Kenwood. Comfirm one thing. Just this one thing: the video was crisp on the Knewood DNX7100 or it wasn't?

Posted Jun 05, 2007 · 01:29 UTC#22

Crisp video yeah, I'll agree, but crisp video won't make the unit last any longer than a D3 would.

I'm curious YoungDru...

Are you a 16 year old Civic driver?

Posted Jun 05, 2007 · 05:49 UTC#24

The world will now never know... :(

Posted Jun 05, 2007 · 13:38 UTC#25

Ah well, no loss really.
