I was paging through the manual along with the site and the manual shows a text button for the radio to get the name of the song while listening to terrestial radio, but the text button does not appear, is there a setting somewhere I am missing?

Please specify head unit you are talking about

I think he has a D3. But I'm pretty sure it doesn't have RDS

Posted Jul 20, 2007 · 00:42 UTC#4

None of the AVICs support RDS (yet) :)

$2000 bucks and no RDS? This is one of my grips with the Z1. My factory ford radio had this. Totally sucks.

I live in Europe and my Avic D3 supports RDS.

Also no need for a bypass for watching dvd's.

They add an option cable to connect to the handbrake. If the handbrake is on you can watch dvd. When you don't install the cable its always on.

Sorry mvd, I was generalizing for US models of the AVICs. We don't have too many members here who live over the Atlantic Pond :) lol

Posted Jul 20, 2007 · 15:22 UTC#8

becuase RDS means Reading Display while Speeding.

Yes, that is why AVIC's don't have this feature in our free country!

does this mean that rds may be in the works via some form of update? can you even update the software on the avic? that would be sweet!

Doubtful pioneer radios haven't had rds in a very long time.

Why would you want RDS anyways? Just get satellite radio. No commercials much better content. Only a few bucks a month and its worth it. Terrestrial radio sucks.

Posted Jul 20, 2007 · 21:12 UTC#12

Now you sound like PaisanNYC too

Posted Jul 20, 2007 · 21:16 UTC#13

O god that can't be good..ha

Posted Jul 20, 2007 · 22:18 UTC#14

I do, I have the Sirius lifetime, but saw it in the manual, because there is one show I can't get on satellite.

Hay! LOL

No commercials??? Just becuase they only play Sirius/XM commercials does not mean that they are commercial free. They are still advertising for themselves.

Listen to station 1 on Sirius? I really don't care for the brittney spears commentary. If I wanted it, I would flip to the SNL channel (does that even exist?). I want music and music only...back to back. My iPod does this.

Speaking of station 1, that is the only 21st centry pop station on Sirrius. If Justin Timberlake comes on, I want to change it, but none of the other stations I listen to. And I can't listen to them anyways going under a tunnel, under a bridge, or in a parking garage when I want to set off car alarms!!! For that I flip to FM or iPod.

Playboy radio is cool though...for a few minutes. I personally could care less about sports.

I can honestly say that satillate radio, both XM and Sirrius (lifetime subscriptions) were the worst purchases I have made.

FM radio here (Tucson, AZ) is awesome. We have quite a few pop stations, great reception, and if there is a commercial, I change the station! Best of all it's free!!!

Come on Pioneer, HD radio was around before the Z1...where the hell is it???

Posted Jul 21, 2007 · 01:17 UTC#17

Why are you listening to pop anyways? That would fix your hatred for satellite radio

Posted Jul 21, 2007 · 01:25 UTC#18

LOL Bad excuses for not getting SatRad. I agree, if all you listen to is pop music, then stick with free radio. SatRad is so much more. It is for the open minded who enjoy MANY broad ranges of music not easily heard on free radio. But if New Kids on the Block, Vanilla Ice, and MC Hammer are your thing, enjoy free fm ;)

PS - I get perfect signals drive through underpasses, parking garages, and tunnels, and even my portable XM in my basement. XM has a far superior ground repeater network than Sirius.

Any speculations on the merge?

Posted Jul 21, 2007 · 03:06 UTC#20

Yea I agree, xm's technology is way more advanced than sirius. Unfortunately I cannot listen to my perverted Howard Stern on XM. O well I'll suffer.

And merger probably won't happen for 2 years at least I'm guessing.

Posted Jul 21, 2007 · 04:43 UTC#21

Really? XM is better?

It was my understanding that XM's satillates are angled at a narrower degree (higher above) therefore giving better coverage with skyscrapers and mountains. Sirrius' are wider angled, therefore giving better bridge/parking garage coverage.

In addition, I thought that XM uses a VBR datastream, where as Sirrius uses a CBR, giving less coloration. People on other forums reported that Sirrius just sounded better.

Both are not great in my opinion as far as audio quality (Complete Polk SR sound system, $12,000+). iPod with 320kbps mp3s or a lossless format is much better.

Maybe this is just me...

Posted Jul 21, 2007 · 04:49 UTC#22

I've had both. To me sirius sounds much better, and xm cuts out due to loss of sat reception less. I primarily listen to country music (is that obvious?) and I like sirius's selection better.

Posted Jul 21, 2007 · 06:16 UTC#23

Yea sirius' content is much better...game over

Posted Jul 21, 2007 · 10:29 UTC#24

Sirius does play nice music, but has more DJs.

XM needs to start playing more diverse music, but their tech is better.

XM's satellites are geosynchronous, Sirius is geostationary. Geosynchronous is the better way to transmit. Rumor is that Sirius' next satellite launch will be geosynchronous now.
